KDS Computers, Inc. Valiant 6000 Series Hibernation Utility (also referred to as Suspend-to-Disk or Save-to-Disk) PHDISK is a program that creates a partition or file on your hard disk large enough to store the entire state of your computer. This partition or file is referred to as the Suspend-to-Disk partition/file or hibernation partition/file. Generally, the hibernation file is preferred over the partition since you can resize the hibernation space without having to erase your hard drive and re-install the operating system. By default, the hibernation file created is based on the standard memory configuration of your computer which is system RAM, cache RAM, and video RAM. If you increase the size of your system RAM, you need to recreate your hibernation file. There are three ways of recreating the hibernation file. Refer below. Option 1: (AUTO) --------- 1. Boot from a bootable floppy disk. 2. From the DOS prompt, change to the \DRIVERS subdirectory by typing the command below. If this subdirectory is not present you have to use option 3. CD\DRIVERS 3. From C:\DRIVERS, type the command below. If you get a "Bad command or filename" error OR if the file PHDISK.EXE is not present, you have to use option 3. PHDISK /CREATE /FILE 4. Press any key when prompted to restart your computer. Option 2: (MANUAL) --------- 1. PHDISK 4. When prompted to choose an action, select CREATE FILE then press <Enter>. 5. When prompted to input a size, press <Enter> to accept the minimum size displayed or type 535264 then <Enter> to set the hibernation file to the maximum size. It may take up to several minutes before the hibernation file is created. NOTE: The number 535264 is the hibernation file size required if you have 512 MB installed. If you use this number, then you don't have to recreate the hibernation file if you install more memory in the future. However, if you don't plan on installing more memory in the future, it is recommended that you use the minimum size displayed so that less hard disk space is used. 7. When prompted to choose an action, select REBOOT then press <Enter>. 8. Press any key to restart the computer. (The hibernation file is now created). Option 3: --------- 1. Download the S2D.EXE file and save it to your hard drive. 2. Run S2D.EXE and insert a floppy disk when prompted. NOTE: The contents of the floppy disk will be permanently deleted. 3. Restart your computer and boot from the hibernation floppy disk just created. 4. Press any key when prompted to restart the computer. Remove the hibernation floppy disk from your floppy drive.
