                        UltraIDE Pro PCI Device Driver
                         for Microsoft Windows 95/98
                              Revision 2.0

INTRODUCTION
This readme file provides the information needed to install
and use the UltraIDE Pro PCI device driver for Microsoft Windows 95/98.
    It includes the following setcions:

    o Installing the Device Driver
    o Check the installation
    o Troubleshooting

The Windows 95/98 sub-directory (\95) on the driver diskette
    contains the following files:

HPT345.MPD The UltraIDE Pro PCI device driver for Windows 95/98.

H3X3HLP.VXD A helper driver for UltraIDE Pro PCI.

HPT345.INF A file used by Windows 95/98 Setup for driver
                    installation.

README.TXT An ASCII text file describing the UltraIDE Pro PCI device
                    driver for Windows 95/98.

DISKVSD.VXD An updated Microsoft disk VSD driver.

IMPORTANT NOTE: DISKVSD.VXD has been provided
by Microsoft and is used to solve a problem
associated with large capacity (larger than 2GB)
hard drives connected to UltraIDE Pro PCI. If you already
have the UltraIDE Pro PCI device driver installed, just
copy the DISKVSD.VXD to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS
directory to override the old one!

You may want to make a backup copy of the
original DISKVSD.VXD file before overriding it,
just in case you may need to revert to the
                    original version in the future.

INSTALLING THE DEVICE DRIVER
Turn on the system power. When your Windows 95/98 system boots up,
it will find a new device on your system called "PCI Mass Storage
Controller". You will then be prompted to install the device
    driver:

    1. Insert the floppy diskette containing the UltraIDE Pro PCI Windows
95/98 device driver into drive A:.
    2. If the Update Device Driver Wizard window shows up:
        A. Click Next.
        B. Click Other Locations....
        C. Type in A:\95, then click OK.
        D. Click Finish.
        E. Goto step 4.
    3. If the New Hardware Found window shows up:
        A. Choose "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer",
            then click OK.
        B. Type in A:\95, then click OK.
    4. The device driver will load. If you are prompted where
DISKVSD.VXD or H3X3HLP.VXD or HPT345.MPD is located, simply
        re-enter A:\95.
    5. If asked to restart the computer, choose Yes.
    6. The Windows 95/98 device driver setup is complete. Your system
will come up and all devices attached to the UltraIDE Pro PCI host
        adapter should be recognized.

CHECKING THE INSTALLATION
To verify if the UltraIDE Pro PCI host adapter and its device drivers are
properly installed, perform the following steps:

    1. Open My Computer.
    2. Double-click the Control Panel icon.
    3. Double-click the System icon.
    4. Click Device Manager.
    5. Double-click SCSI controllers or SCSI Adapter.
    6. You should see item UltraIDE Pro PCI Ultra DMA Controller.
    7. If you do not see item UltraIDE Pro PCI Ultra DMA Controller under
SCSI controllers or SCSI Adapter, or if you see a yellow "!"
besides the UltraIDE Pro PCI Ultra DMA Controller, please go directly
to the Troubleshooting section of this readme file.

PARTITIONING NEW HARD DISK DRIVES
NOTE: Skip this section if the hard disk drive attached to the
UltraIDE Pro PCI host adapter has already been partitioned and formatted.

New hard disk drives attached to the UltraIDE Pro PCI host adapter need
to be partitioned and formatted. If you have not already done
so, begin by first partitioning the hard disk drive.

To partition the hard disk drive attached to the UltraIDE Pro PCI host
    adapter, perform the follow steps:

    1. Open an MS-DOS prompt
    2. Type FDISK
    3. Change to the hard disk you want to create the partition on
    4. Once the partition has been created restart the system.
    5. After the system restarts, format the newly created hard disk
partition(S) that is attached to the UltraIDE Pro PCI adapter.

TROUBLESHOOTING
    1. Make sure the host adapter is properly installed and the
device is correctly connected to the adapter. Double check
that the cable between the adapter and the drive(s) is
correctly attached. Also check that the jumper settings on
        the drive is correct.

    2. Make sure that a power cable is properly attached to each of
the drives connected to the UltraIDE Pro PCI host adapter.

    3. If you see a yellow "!" besides the UltraIDE Pro PCI Ultra DMA
Controller in the Device Manger, most possibly the power
cable or the cable between the adapter and the drive(s) is
not properly attached or the jumper settings on the drive(s)
are not correct. Correct the mistake(s) and restart the
        computer.

After the computer restarts, if the yellow "!" is still
there, the driver might not be properly installed, please
try the following method to reinstall the driver:

        A. Insert the floppy diskette containing the UltraIDE Pro PCI
Windows 95/98 device driver into drive A:.
        B. Open the Device Manager (open My Computer; open Control
Panel; double-click icon System; click Device Manager).
        C. Double-click UltraIDE Pro PCI Ultra DMA Controller. The
            Properties Window shows up.
        D. Click Driver.
        E. Click Update Driver....
        F. Choose "No, select driver from list", then click Next.
        G. Select UltraIDE Pro PCI Ultra DMA Controller in the Model
            list,then click Finish.
        H. If you are prompted where DISKVSD.VXD or H3X3HLP.VXD or
HPT345.MPD is located, simply enter A:\95 then click OK,
        I. The device driver will load. You will be back to the
            Properties window. Click Close.
        J. Click Close.

    4. After you have surely checked steps 1,2,3 above, if in the
Device Manger, you do not see item UltraIDE Pro PCI Ultra DMA
Controller under SCSI controllers or SCSI Adapter, but you
see item PCI Mass Storage Controller under the Other devices,
the driver might not be properly installed, you can try the
following method to reinstall the driver:

        A. Open the Device Manager (open My Computer; open Control
Panel; double-click the System icon; click Device Manager).
        B. Select PCI Mass Storage Controller, then click Remove.
        C. If you are asked to confirm device removal, click OK.
        D. Click Close.
        E. Restart your computer.
        F. Then exactly follow the procedure described in the
INSTALLING THE DEVICE DRIVER section to install
            the driver again.

    5. If the driver has been properly installed and you still
cannot access the hard disk drive attached to the UltraIDE
Pro PCI host adapter, the hard disk drive might have not
been partitioned and formatted yet. To partition and format
please follow the steps mentioned in the "Partitioning
New Hard Disk Drives" section of this file.
