Slow or Dropped Connection on a 10/100 Switch or Hub Windows Me, 98, 95: The switch may be forced to 10 Mbps. Disable Auto Polarity: 1. Open Control Panel>Network 2. Double click the LAN PC Card. 3. Click the Advanced tab. 4. Select Automatic Polarity Selection. 5. Select Disable. Windows 2000, NT: 1. With the Installation CD in the CD-ROM drive, browse to D:\AUTOPL\AUTOPL.EXE, where D: is your CD-ROM drive. 2. Double-click AUTOPL.EXE. 3. Select "3Com LAN Card". 4. Click "Disable". 5. Click "OK" and "Close". --------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Windows 2000 Drivers The 3Com Installation CD does not contain drivers (.INF) for Windows 2000. Check the 3Com support Web site (www.3com.com/support) for new drivers as they become available. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Connection LED is Lit when the LAN PC Card is Not Connected The LEDs on the LAN PC Card work correctly when the line speed is set to Auto Detect. When the line speed is set to anything else, the LED is lit all the time, even when no cable is connected. This means that you cannot determine the status of the connection from the LED state when the line speed is not set to Auto Detect. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. DOS and WINDOWS 3.X The LAN card works with laptops that contain Card Services. If you are not running Card Services on your system, the PC Card will work with laptops that have an Intel PCMCIA (PC Card) or compatible controller. If Card Services is not installed, the PC Card might not work with other controllers. You may override IRQ, I/O base, and CIS Memory base address configuration parameters. See the sample NET.CFG or PROTOCOL.INI files on the Installation disk for proper syntax. NOTE: If either the interrupt or the I/O address is overridden, the other must be overridden also. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Full-Duplex Operation NetWare ODI: The DOS ODI NetWare driver supports full-duplex operation (sending and receiving data simultaneously). WARNING: You MUST be connected to a switched full-duplex Ethernet hub to use this feature. To enable this feature, add the ODI Keyword "FULL DUPLEX" to the NET.CFG file. NDIS 2.0: To enable the NDIS 2.0 full duplex, add the Full Duplex Keyword to the PROTOCOL.INI file: ORIGINAL (Half Duplex): [ms$el3c574] DRIVERNAME=EL3C574$ MODIFIED (Full Duplex): [ms$el3c574] DRIVERNAME=EL3C574$ FULL-DUPLEX=YES --------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Plug-and-Play Plug-and-Play must be set to "disable" in CMOS when using the DOS drivers with the LAN card. ********************************************************************* ISSUES AND ACTIONS ********************************************************************* 7. AST Ascentia P Series Issue: Card not working properly. Action: This LAN card does not support Ascentia P Series computers. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. Dell Latitude LM P100 Issue: Under Windows 95 OSR 2, this computer failed some DOS diagnostics tests when the LAN card was installed in the bottom slot and the card was set for I/O=300 and IRQ=10. Auto-configure is unable to find any usable IRQ. Action: The DOS drivers should function properly even though the adapter fails diagnostics with the settings I/O=300 and IRQ=10. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 9. Tecra 440CX Issue: When running Windows 95 OSR 2, after removing and reinstalling the NDIS driver, the system is forced into into Safe Mode. Action: Remove the LAN card, reboot, then reinsert the LAN card. This should allow normal operation. Once normal operation resumes, running ScanDisk should fix the problem. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 10. Micron Transport XKE Issue: When running DOS Diagnostics (INSTALL.EXE), the system may hang during Starting Configuration and Diagnostics. It also may hang while loading the NDIS2 driver. Action: In the BIOS, set Plug-and-Play to Yes, and reboot. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 11. Texas Instruments Extensa 660CD Notebook Computers Issue: Auto-Configure under INSTALL.EXE does not properly allocate resources to the LAN card. Auto-Configure sets IRQ 5 and I/O 300. With these settings, intermittent self-test failures may occur. Action: Specify either IRQ 10 or 11 and I/O 300 for the LAN card. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 12. Toshiba Satellite 220CDS Issue: DOS diagnostics program INSTALL.EXE does not detect the LAN card. Action: In the computer BIOS, set PC Card Controller mode to PCIC Compatible. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 13. Digital Hi Note VP 575 Issue: Unable to get the INSTALL.EXE, DOS ODI, or NDIS 2.0 driver to load. Action: The LAN card does not support the Digital Hi Note VP 575 in DOS environments. Use the card under the supported Windows environments, where it will install and operate correctly. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 14. Digital Hi Note Ultra Issue: When Auto Configure is run as part of the DOS Diagnostics, this computer cannot locate an available IRQ. This problem has occurred with NDIS 4 under Windows NT 4.0 and with NDIS 3. Action: With NDIS 4 under Windows NT 4.0, use the adapter settings I/O= 0x300H and IRQ=11. With NDIS 2, use I/O=0x380H and IRQ=5. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 15. Sony VAIO PCG-808 and 505FX Issue: After initial installation and setup, the Configuration and Diagnostic program in INSTALL.EXE cannot detect the LAN card. Action: Power down the computer and reboot. After this, the computer should be able to recognize the card normally. For continued operation, be sure you are using the correct settings for the LAN card: I/O=300 and IRQ=10. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 16. Failure When Modem PC Card is Installed Issue: In DOS environments, the LAN card NDIS and ODI drivers may not install correctly with some 3Com, Megahertz, and U.S. Robotics modem enablers. Action: Reload the modem enabler using the following line in CONFIG.SYS: device=a:\enable.exe /c2 /im3 /sn The switch /sn specifies the slot the modem uses and will enable the modem only in that slot. N can be any value A through H (for example, on Dell Latitude computers, A is the top slot and B is the bottom slot), so you would use /sA or /sB). The /c and /im switches set the COM port and interrupt. ********************************************************************* NDIS 4 DRIVER ********************************************************************* 17. Driver Information 3Com includes the new NDIS 4 network driver on the Installation disk. The W95EL574.INF file loads the correct driver for Windows 95, and the OEMSETUP.INF file loads the correct driver for Windows NT. The NDIS 4 driver works with Windows 95 OSR2 (version # 4.00.950b) and Windows NT 4.0, but not standard Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51. The NDIS 3 driver works with Windows 95 OSR2, Windows NT 4.0, standard Windows 95 (versions 4.00.950 or 400.950a), and Windows NT 3.51. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18. Checking the Driver Installation After installing the NDIS driver under Windows 95, if either of the LEDs is not lit, go to Control Panel>System icon>Device Manager to check the status of the LAN PC Card. If Network Adapter has a yellow exclamation mark, an incorrect NDIS driver was loaded from the Installation disk. Remove the incorrect driver and install the correct driver. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19. Installing the NDIS 4 Driver for Windows 95 OSR2 You must use the latest NDIS.VXD to use the NDIS 4 driver. To install the NDIS 4 driver, using Windows 95 OSR2, follow these steps: 1. Make a backup copy of the W95EL574.INF file. 2. Remove the installed NDIS driver from the hard drive: Click Control Panel. Click the Network icon. Click Configuration. General Information The Installation Disk contains a Novell NetWare DOS ODI Driver (3C574.COM). If you are using 3Com's automatic installation program, Intelligent Auto Install, delete references to any other network adapter in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file prior to executing Intelligent Auto Install. Delete the NET.CFG file, and a new one will be copied over. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 22. Windows NT 4.0 The most common issue with the FE574BT PC Card is finding valid resources for the non-plug and play operating system of Windows NT 4.0. Below is a list of configurations that 3Com Technical Support has found to work. Every situation is different, but these resources are a good starting point. Note: 3Com Technical Support does not guarantee these working configurations in these laptops. We have found these resources to work in specific situations, but performance may vary based on your notebook's configuration. In those instances, use whichever resources work. The most common symptom of a resource conflict is either a freeze during startup or no connection to the network. If your system is not listed, go to http://knowledgebase.3com.com. After registering, open solution 1.0.13478523.1976541 for the latest working configurations available.
