B500DIAG.TXT - Documentation file for B500DIAG.EXE
--------------------------------------------------

B500DIAG.EXE is a program to test the Buddy B-500 controller
boards and Buddy Stations under DOS.

B500DIAG.EXE will try to find and initialize the controller card
to make sure it is working, then tests the video, keyboard,
serial and parallel ports on the Buddy Stations to make
sure communication between the controller card and the Station
is working.

1. Test environment:

Boot DOS by doing one of the following:
         1) Press F8 after the "Starting Windows 95..." message
while the system is booting, and select the "Safe
            mode Command Prompt Only" option.
         2) Boot DOS from floppy disk.
         3) Select "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode" from
            the Start-bar "Shutdown' menu.

Note: Do not load any upper memory management software such
as EMM386 or QEMM as that may cause a problem when
B500DIAG tries to find an 8K upper memory area to allocate
         to the Buddy B-500 controller.

Run B500DIAG.EXE from the DOS prompt.

Note: Run B500DIAG /V to see more verbose diagnostic messages.

The hardware should be configured as follows:

                               =================

There is only one Buddy Station shown attached to the controller
here, but the tests run simultaneously on all the Buddy Stations.

Pressing ESC in test #3 (Serial/Parallel) on any Buddy Station
terminates B500DIAG.EXE and transfers control back to the main
   console.

2. Finding and initializing the controller card.

B500DIAG will first try to find and initialize any Buddy B-500
controller cards in the system. A list of the boards found
will be displayed, and you will be asked to press Enter to
   continue.

3. Test #1: Video

After you run B500DIAG.EXE, all base units will display a
test pattern with different color foreground/background on the
attached video monitor. If the test pattern appears, and every
color looks good, it means the video test is ok.

4. Test #2: Keyboard

When the test pattern shows on the VGA screen, B500DIAG waits
for you to press keys on the base unit keyboards. The
keyboard sends scan codes to the base unit which are displayed
on the monitor. Press CAPS-LOCK, NUM-LOCK, and SCROLL-LOCK to
test the keyboard LEDs. Press ESC to end the keyboard test and
   go to Test #3.

Note: for this test, the keyboard must be attached directly to
the base unit. If you are using the first port on a SV (VGA)
controller as the Host console, connect a keyboard directly to
   the base unit to test.

5. Test #3: Serial/Parallel

Serial port setup is 9600 baud, 8 data bit, 1 stop bit,
no parity. The recommended test device is a serial terminal
   attached to the serial port.

Any keys typed on the serial terminal keyboard are displayed
on the VGA monitor. Any keys typed on the base unit keyboard are
dumped to the serial terminal display and to the parallel printer.

   Press ESC to terminate test.

Note: this test runs simultaneously on all Buddy Stations. Pressing
ESC in test #3 on any base unit terminates B500DIAG.EXE and transfers
control back to the main console.
