Windows 98 and Windows 95 Driver Installation Information

This document describes how to install the network driver for 
Windows 98 and Windows 95.

NOTE: The following instructions assume that you have not
      installed any other network adapter in the notebook. If you
      have been using a network connection on your computer,
      some of the following instructions may not apply or may
      produce different results. Refer to your MIS department
      or system manager for instructions.

Before installing the network driver, you should know the
following:

      - The name of your Windows 98 or 95 workgroup or the
        name of your NT Domain or NT Workgroup
      - Windows 98 or 95 system installation files 
        (on hard disk, floppy diskettes, or CD)
      - CardBus PC Card and the LAN Installation Disk

Installing the Network Driver in Windows 98
Windows 98 appears on the boot up screen when 
Windows 98 is installed on your notebook. 

1.  Make sure the PC Card is installed and 
    connected to the network as described in the User Guide.

2.  Turn on your notebook and start Windows 98.
    Windows 98 automatically detects the PC Card, opens a 
    New Hardware Found window, and starts collecting 
    information for a driver information database.

    When Windows 98 is ready to configure the new hardware, 
    it opens the Add New Hardware Wizard window.
    The window states that Windows will search for 
    new drivers for FE575C-3Com 10/100 LAN CardBus -Fast Ethernet.

3.  Click Next.
    A new window appears asking what you want 
    Windows to do.

4.  Select Search for best driver for your 
    device and click Next.

5.  Select Floppy disk drives, insert the 
    LAN Installation Disk, and click Next.

    After the hardware wizard finds the installation 
    files on the diskette, it displays 
    FE575C-3Com 10/100 LAN CardBus -Fast Ethernet.

6.  Click Next to copy the required files and 
    build a driver information database.

7.  If prompted, insert the Windows 98 CD.
    The Windows 98 files may be located on the 
    hard drive in the folder C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.

8.  Click OK to copy the required files.

    Please wait while Windows checks your current 
    network configuration. The required time depends 
    on your settings for network software componenets.

    A window appears stating that Windows has finished 
    installing the software and that your new 
    hardware device requires.

9.  Click Finish.

10. Remove the LAN Installation Disk and reboot the notebook.
    The driver installation is complete.

Windows 95 Version 4.00.950B
1.  Boot Windows 95 with both slots empty.

2.  Open the Control Panel and double-click the System icon.

3.  Select the Device Manager tab.

4.  Double-click on the PCMCIA Socket category.
    The installed PCMCIA controller driver is listed. 

5.  Confirm that there is no red x or yellow exclamation point
    on this device.

6.  Click Cancel to exit the Device Manager.

7.  Insert the PC Card.

8.  The Update Device Driver wizard window appears and states 
    that it has detected the FE575C-3Com 10/100 
    LAN CardBus -Fast Ethernet.

9.  Insert the LAN Installation Disk and click Next 
    to begin driver installation.

    The following message appears: 
    "Windows found the following updated 
    driver for this device: FE575C-3Com 
    10/100 LAN CardBus -Fast Ethernet"

10. Click Finish to accept the driver.
    If you are prompted for the LAN Installation Disk
    make sure that a: is the designated path.  

11. If prompted, insert the Windows 95 CD or 
    type the path to the Windows 95 installation files 
    (typically C:\windows\options\cabs).

12. If during installation, the 3Com driver cannot be found, 
    enter A:\ to point Windows to the driver.

    The PC Card network driver installation is complete.

13. Restart the notebook to login to the network.



Windows 95 Version 4.00.950 and 4.00.950A
1.  Boot Windows 95 with both PC Card slots empty.
    Click Control Panel and double click on the System icon.

2.  Select the Device Manager tab.

3.  Double-click on the PCMCIA socket category.
    The installed PCMCIA controller driver is listed. 

4.  There should be an "x" on the device.
    Confirm that there is no red x or yellow 
    exclamation point on this device.

5.  Click Cancel to exit the Device Manager.

6.  Insert the PC Card.
    The New Hardware Found window appears and states 
    that it has detected the FE575C-3Com 10/100 LAN 
    CardBus -Fast Ethernet has been detected.

7.  Insert the LAN Installation Disk.

8.  Select Driver from Disk provided by manufacturer 
    and click OK.
    
    The Install from Disk window appears.

9.  Click OK to copy the manufacturers files from A:\.

10. If Windows 95 files are requested, enter the path 
    to the files (typically C:\windows\options\cabs) 
    and click OK.

    The PC Card network driver installation is complete.

11. Restart the notebook to login to the network.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
