Network Drivers Installation Notes

WINDOWS 95 AND MICROSOFT WINDOWS NETWORKING

This document describes how to configure the 3Com Megahertz 3CxEM556
adapter for use with Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows Networking.

These procedures are also described in the Megahertz LAN +
Modem PC Card User's Guide, Chapter 4, "Setup for Windows 95".

Check the 3Com web site (www.3com.com) for the latest drivers.

Setup configures your 3Com Megahertz LAN + Modem PC Card to function
correctly in your computer and operating environment. Obtain the
 following information before running Setup:

     - Network operating system you will be accessing with your Card.
     - Preferred server on your network, if applicable. You can
get this information from your System Administrator.
     - For installing an ODI driver, know what frame type(s) your
network uses. Get this information from your System
       Administrator or User's Guide.
     - Cabling system used by your network-either 10Base-T or
10Base-2. If you do not know, get this information
       from your System Administrator.

 Installation:
 ------------
NOTE: Do not insert the LAN + Modem PC Card into the computer's
       slot until Setup prompts you.

Follow these steps to install and configure the LAN + Modem PC
Card in Windows 95 and Windows 95 OSR 2.

NOTE: Setup may reboot your computer to complete the installation
of your LAN + Modem PC Card.

 1. Insert 3Com Megahertz Installation disk #1 into the floppy drive.

 2. Click "Start", then "Run".

 3. Type a:\setup and click "Enter".

When you are prompted to insert the LAN + Modem PC Card, remove
it from its plastic case and insert it into any PC Card slot
     on your notebook.

 4. When the Network window appears during Setup, select the
network driver that gives you access to your network.
The driver you select depends on the kind of network you are
running. If you need to, change the Primary Network Logon
to your network type. Click OK.

 5. Remove the 3Com Megahertz Installation disk and click OK.

 6. If you are prompted to restart your computer. Click "Yes".

NOTE: We recommend that you run the PC Card Installation Test that
appears after the computer has restarted. Besides testing your
modem functions, it registers your modem with 3Com.

 8. When prompted to install the electronic LAN + Modem User's Guide,
click "Install" to load it or "Continue" to move on with setup.

 9. If you have a sound card, a speaker, and a microphone (either
built-in or externally attached), and a multimedia subsystem is
installed, opt to install the 3Com Mobile Speakerphone Software.
(See Chapter 4 in the User's Guide for more information on using
     your computer as a speakerphone.)

10. Load and configure the communications software you will use for
     data and fax transmissions.

Setup gives you the option of installing the RapidComm Voice
software and electronic manual, but you can use virtually any
communications software package. You can also use the modem
with resident communications applications such as Terminal and
HyperTerminal. For modem initialization strings for common
applications, see Chapter 4 of the User's Guide.

11. When the "Installation Complete!" screen appears, click OK.

NOTE: If you connect the LAN cable before booting into the operating
system, you may have to reboot your computer.

Your LAN + Modem Card is enabled. To use the LAN portion of your Card,
you may need to install the network client now. See your System
Administrator or network manuals for installation procedures.

 PLUG AND PLAY INSTALLATION
 --------------------------

While 3Com recommends the use of the SETUP.EXE program, there may be
some instances where a plug and play method is preferred by the user.

The following instructions are offered for plug and play.

 Determining Your Windows 95 Version
 ---------------------------

If you do not run Setup when installing in Windows 95, you must
first determine whether you have standard Windows 95 or Windows 95
OSR 2. This is so you can ensure that the correct drivers are
 installed.

To determine if your laptop has Windows 95 OSR 2, open the Control
Panel, select "System," and look at system information under the
General tab. If your release is identified as version 4.00.950 B,
you are using Windows 95B (OSR 2).

Once you have determined the version, proceed to the appropriate
 section.

 WINDOWS 95B (OSR 2)
 -------------------

NOTE: The following instructions assume that you have not
installed any other network adapter. If you have already
been using a network adapter on your computer, some of
these instructions may not apply or may produce different
results. In this case, please refer to your System
Administrator or MIS department for instructions.

Before installing the network driver, you should know the
 following:

      - The name of your Windows 95 workgroup or:
      - The name of the NT Domain or NT Workgroup to which
        you belong.

For a successful installation you also need:

      - Windows 95 system installation files (either on hard
        disk, floppy diskettes, or CD)
      - 3CxEM556 LAN +Modem card and the accompanying
        Installation Disk #2

SETTING UP THE LAN + MODEM CARD:

 1. Turn on the computer and start Windows 95.

 2. Insert the 3CxEM556 Card in the system.

If you see an "unknown device" message, go to the section
     below titled "Installing Networking".

 3. From the Control Panel, double click the PCMCIA icon. This
opens the PC Card (PCMCIA) Wizard.

At this point, the card wizard may ask whether you are
using a PC Card to install Windows. (This question typically
has to do with whether you are using an external CD-Rom or
floppy drive connected to the computer through a PC card.)
For this installation, the question probably does not apply.
     Click "Next".

NOTE: If a window appears that has the 3Com adapter listed, your
adapter has already been installed in this system. If there
is a yellow question mark next to the listing, refer to
       trouble.txt.

 4. If you are using Real Mode Drivers, you will be prompted
whether to remove them. Select "No" and click "Next."

 5. Click "Finish".

At the shutdown prompt, click "Yes" to shut down the system.
When shutdown is complete, restart the computer.

 Installing Networking

included with Windows 95, insert Installation Diskette #2.

 2. Click "Next" and when the updated driver is found,
     click "Finish".

NOTE: If driver is not found, click "Back" and then "Other" and
point to the location of the Installation DISK #2.

 3. When the system prompts for Location Information, enter the
requested location information and click OK.

 4. When the system prompts for Computer Name and Group

Installation files will usually be found in either
	DISK1 or DISK2
		A:\
	OR
		C:\Windows\Options\CABS
	OR

is required, insert DISK #1 in the above directions.

If you are connecting to a NETWARE server

 1. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network.

 2. Change the Primary Network Logon to "Client for Netware
    Networking".

 3. Click OK. You will be prompted to reboot. Click "Yes".

Do not attempt to start this installation with Installation
Disk #2. (However, you may be prompted for this disk later
in the installation. You can insert it then.)
