 TroubleShooting in Windows95B OSR2
 ----------------------------------

Issue: Adapter did not install correctly, is not attaching to the
network, or modem is not functioning.

Solution: Many times this is due to a faulty installation of some
sort. Try running UNINSTAL.EXE from the LAN+Modem
Installation 1 diskette and then run SETUP.EXE again.
If this doesn't work, try running UNINSTAL.EXE
and then install using the Plug and Play method.
 -------------

 Issue: SETUP.EXE fails to complete

Solution: Reboot to see if the installation will complete. If not, run
UNINSTALL.EXE and reinstall using the Plug and Play method
described in the manual and W95NDIS3.TXT file.
 -------------

Issue: Card fails to install properly or will not connect to
        the network.

Solution: Try installing the card into a different socket in
           the Laptop.
 -------------

Issue:	Card is not detected, but PCMCIA controllers are installed
and working. Other cards function. If I go to Control
Panel/PC CARD, the 3Com Megahertz adapter appears with
a yellow question mark or modem or other symbol than a
        multi-function adapter (white diamond).

Solution: The 3Com Network Adapter has been misinstalled. Proceed
to Control Panel/System/Device manager. Expand all of the
device categories. Remove any devices that refer to the
3Com adapter. Check the C:\WINDOWS\INF\OTHER directory
for any .INF files that contain 3CXEM556 information.
These may start with S3C*.INF. Move these files out of
their directory into a temporary directory off of the
           root.
 -------------

Issue: Unable to create multiple configurations with one portion of
the adapter disabled and the other enabled in Device manager.

Solution: This feature is not supported by this adapter.
 -------------

Issue: On a Fujitsu 655TX, sound-distorted while using the modem.

Solution: Enter the computer's BIOS and under "Audio Features"
change the IO address to "Disabled". (Your sound will
           still function in Windows 95.)
 -------------

Issue: Card fails to install or function correctly.

Solution: Try installing the adapter in another slot.

sort. Try running the UNINSTAL.EXE and then running SETUP.EXE
again. If this doesn't work, try running the UNINSTAL.EXE
and then install using the Plug and Play method.
 -------------

 Issue: SETUP.EXE fails to complete

Solution: Reboot to see if the installation will complete. If not, run
UNINSTALL.EXE and reinstall using the Plug and Play method
described in the manual and W95NDIS3.TXT file.
 -------------

Issue: In several Texas Instruments (TI) series notebooks running
Phoenix Card Services, the system will lock up during setup.

Solution: The card can usually be setup on these machines by
removing Phoenix Card Services and placing the
machine in PCIC or compatible mode. Contact Acer (Acer
currently supports the TI Laptop line) for more information
on how to accomplish this. For additional information,
refer to either Acer’s website or 3Com’s website.
 -------------

Issue:	Card is not detected, but my PCMCIA controllers are installed
and working. Other Cards function. If I go to Control
Panel/PC CARD, the 3Com Megahertz adapter appears with
a yellow question mark or modem or other symbol than a
        multi-function adapter (white diamond.)

Solution: The 3Com Network Adapter has been misinstalled. Proceed
to Control Panel/System/Device manager. Expand ALL of
the device categories. Remove any devices that refer
to the 3Com adapter. Check the C:\WINDOWS\INF or
C:\WINDOWS\INF\OTHER directory for any .INF files that
contain 3CxEM556 information. These may start with
S3C*.INF. Move these files out of their directory into
a temporary directory off of the root.

Shut down the system. Then, restart and reinstall the
           adapter.
 -------------

Issue: When using certain Toshiba laptops, setup cannot read
Installation Disk #2. (May return "Invalid Disk!" error
        message.)

To use certain Toshiba laptops with multiple disks, it may be
        necessary to replace the file:

             CC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\HSFLOP.PDR

with a new one from Toshiba. You can find this information
and the required replacement file at the Toshiba
        website (www.toshiba.com).
 -------------

Issue: Card fails to install or function correctly.

Solution: Try installing the adapter in another slot.

 TroubleShooting In Windows NT 4.0
 ---------------------------------
Issue: The 3CxEM556 doesn’t install or work properly under
        Windows NT 4.0.

Solution: It is necessary to have at least Service Pack 3 applied
with NT 4.0 for the 3CxEM556 to work properly. Please
           apply the Service Pack 3.

 TroubleShooting in DOS
 ----------------------
Issue:	TI 600CD, TI650CD, TI900, Micron, NEC Versa 6000 series, or
other laptops cannot connect to the network

Solution: Try using a different interrupt like 5, 7, or 11. This
can be done by using the command: EMENABLE /IRQ=5, or
EMENABLE /IRQ=7, or EMENABLE /IRQ=B in the AUTOEXEC.BAT.

It may also be necessary to increase the memory exclusion
on the EMM386.exe line in the CONFIG.SYS. Change the
           line to read something like:

                Device=C:\Dos\EMM386.exe x=D000-dfff

If you are using Phoenix Card and Socket Services for
DOS, edit the PCM.INI in the Phoenix Card Services
directory to include IRQ 5 and exclude IRQs 3 and 4.
 -------------

Issue:	Receive error "Unable to configure the adapter"

Solution: On several laptops this may be fixed by changing the
Plug and Play (PNP) entry in the BIOS to OFF.

 -------------
Issue: When trying to run CONFIG and DIAG on a NEC 6030H and
NEC6030X cardbus, the system fails to run and the computer
        needs to be re-booted.

Solution: You should still be able to connect to your network.
Refer to the solution for the "TI 600CD, TI650CD..."
issue listed above. Use interrupt 11.

 -------------
Issue: How to enable Full Duplex

Solution: DOS in C:\NWCLIENT\NET.CFG add the keyword:

              full duplex

           under the [LINK DRIVER] section.

WFW in C:\WFW\PROTOCOL.INI add the keyword:

              fullduplex

           under the [NWLINK] section.

LANMANAGER in C:\LANMAN.DOS\PROTOCOL.INI add the keyword:

              full_duplex=yes

           under the [EM556N2_NIF] section.

IBM DOS Lan Server in C:\NET\PROTOCOL.INI add the keyword:

              full_duplex=yes

           under the [IBM$NETBEUI] section.

TroubleShooting in Windows 98 and Windows NT 5.0
 ------------------------------------------------
These operating systems had not been released at the
time the product was shipped. Therefore, no information
 is available at this time.

 General Hardware TroubleShooting Tips
 -------------------------------------
If the adapter diagnostic tests in CONFIG.EXE, the adapter
might not be defective. Check the following:

 CONFIG.EXE
 ----------
 1. Make sure that the adapter is operating in a computer
containing the Personal Computer Memory Card International
Association (PCMCIA) Release 2.01, Type II or Type III slots.
Usually the CONFIG.EXE will work best on an INTEL PCIC or
    compatible controller.

 2. Make sure that the adapter is completely seated in its slot.
Review the installation instructions in the appropriate
    adapter guide.

 3. Make sure that your computer is running DOS 3.1 or higher
and that no device drivers or memory managers are loaded.

With DOS 6.22 this can be achieved by rebooting and clicking F5
when the message "Starting MS-DOS" appears on the screen.

In Windows 95, this can be achieved by rebooting and pressing the F8
key when the message "Starting Windows 95" appears on
the screen. The Windows 95 boot menu should then appear. At
this point choose "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only". Usually
    this choice is Option #7.

 4. Inspect all cables and connections. Try the laptop at a known
good port. Also, for twisted pair try attaching the adapter
directly to the hub or switch. If this works, there is probably
an intermediate wiring problem. Contact your System Administrator.

 5. If you are running the Echo Server test, make sure that the
adapter is securely connected to a properly cabled network
and an echo server is set up on the network.

 6. If you are configuring the I/O base address or interrupt
request level make sure that the settings you choose for
these parameters do not conflict with any other peripheral
or software program installed in the computer.

 7. Make sure that the configuration setting for the transceiver
    type is correct.

 8. The computer in which the adapter is installed might be
defective. Install the adapter in a known functioning
computer and run the tests again.

 9. Replace the failed adapter with a known working adapter,
with the same configuration. If the second adapter fails,
something is probably wrong with the test environment, not
    with the adapter.

 General Modem TroubleShooting Tips
 ----------------------------------
 1. Loopback Tests

The following loopback AT commands are not supported: Local
Analog Loopback (AT&T8), Remote Analog Loopback (AT&T1, Local
Digital Loopback (AT&T6), and Remote Digital Loopback (AT&T3).

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 2. If You are Using Quicken Version 6

The default maximum baud rate of a modem in Quicken 6 is
19,200bps. Follow the instructions in the Quicken 6 manual to
increase this baud rate for your Megahertz modem.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 3. Receiving Faxes in ProComm Plus

The auto-answer detect feature of ProComm Plus does not work
with your 3CxEM556 series modem. Turn auto-answer detect off.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 4. Using Automatic Credit Card Dialing

When you enter the dial string for a credit card call, place an
ampersand (&) at the end of the phone number, before the
 credit card number.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 5. If You Don't Use Error Correction or Data Compression

To enhance performance when not using error correction or data
 compression, set S24=64.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 6. Where is the Script file for XXXXX?

There are several script files included on the Installation
Diskette #1. Check WWW.3COM.COM for more available Script files
If you are unable to find oner for your communication software,
please check with the vendor or the vendor's website for a
 script file.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 7. You can't achieve 56K or 53.3K connections

The maximum allowed rate is currently 53.3K by the FCC. You can
only achieve these by connecting to a compatible 56K protocol. Your
speed may be limited by the number of different nodes between your
 modem and your ISP.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------
 8. You Can't Get a 33,600bps Connection

Your modem connect speed of 33,600bps is defaulted OFF. To
enable a 33,600bps connection, set S33=0. Also, connection
and data transfer rates will be dependent on several factors
including (but not limited to) the type of modem you are connecting
to and the amount of line noise.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------
 9. Adjusting the Dialtone Volume

Your modem is designed to support only one dialtone volume. It
 cannot be changed.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------
 CELLULAR
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
 12. The Modem Won't Work

Your cellular phone battery may be low. Insert a fully powered
 battery.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 13. You Can't Hear Modem Noises During Dialing and Connection

Your 3CxEM556 series modem is designed not to
produce audio until a connection is being negotiated.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 14. The Cellular Phone Keeps Turning Off

The modem is designed to turn off the cellular phone whenever
the modem power is turned off.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 15. Dial-up Networking Won't Work With Cellular

Windows 95 OSR2 has a feature in the Control Panel under the
Power icon (PC-Card Modems tab) called "Turn off PC-Card
modems when not in use" that must be disabled during dial-up
networking. This should allow you to hear the beep-up tones
when the modem is inserted and active, and to use dial-up
 networking.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 RAPIDCOMM VOICE
 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 16. You Get the Message "Wrong Token Error 1001"

This error occurs when a greeting or auxiliary message is
recorded when calling in remotely to RapidComm Voice without
pressing pound (#) following the recording.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 17. Monitor Function Doesn't Work

 This is as designed.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------
 18. Auto Detect Won't Work

Auto Detect doesn't work when set to Voice/Data/Fax when
receiving a fax from some modems. The default setting for
RapidComm Voice Auto Detect that is shipped with your modem
is set to Data/Fax, so Auto Detect should work.
