      Configuration and Diagnostic Instructions Summary

This document contains information on running the configuration
and diagnostic utilities provided on the Installation Disk #2.

 Topics include:

      Overview
Running DOS CONFIG under Windows 95
Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic utility
	Configuration Changes
	Diagnostic Tests
	Where to Get Additional Information

 Overview
 --------
The configuration portion of the program lets you change the
configuration parameters for the adapter to accommodate a
 specific operating environment.

The diagnostic portion of the Configuration and Diagnostic
Program ensures that the adapter is installed correctly and
functioning properly. The basic tests check the physical
components, connectors, and circuitry of the adapter and
require only that the adapter be installed in the computer.

The Echo tests check the adapter's ability to transmit data
on the network and require that the adapter be connected to
 a network.

The computer containing the adapter to be configured or tested
 must be running DOS only.

Running DOS CONFIG Under Windows 95
 ------------------------------------------

You should run CONFIG.EXE from a DOS command Prompt.

Restart the computer. When you see "Starting Windows 95" press the F8 key.
At the menu, choose "Safe mode Command Prompt Only" (usually #7).

If you do run CONFIG.EXE from within Windows 95, use it only to read
the informational documentation. Do not use it to configure the
 adapter nor to run AUTOLINK.EXE

Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic utility
 -------------------------------------------------
There are two ways to start the program:

 1. From the CONFIG.EXE program, by selecting Configuration and
Diagnostic Program on the main menu.

 2. Manually, from the root directory of the Installation Disk #2,
     by typing the following command:

        CONFIG [command keyword] [parameter list]

CONFIG represents the 3Com Configuration and Diagnostic Program
name. The brackets indicate that the command keyword and
     parameter list are optional.

CONFIG without any arguments invokes the program in full Windows
     mode.

 Command Line Keywords
 ---------------------
The command keywords and parameters are not case-sensitive, so
CONFIG, config, and Config, for example, will all work.

    CONFIG.EXE
Configures an adapter using command line configuration
        parameters.

 Configuration changes
 ---------------------
The adapter can be configured in either full screen windows
    mode or command line mode.

 Full Screen Windows Mode
 ------------------------
To configure the adapter using full-screen windowing, type:

      CONFIG [Enter]

Select Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main menu.
Then select the Configure Adapter option in the Configuration and
    Diagnostic menu.

 Command Line Mode
 -----------------
While Command Line Parameters are included here for completeness,
use of the Command Line Mode may produce anamolous results.

 Command Line with Explicit Parameters
 -------------------------------------
    Command syntax: CONFIG CONFIGURE [ /AUTO /IOBASE:N /INT:N
                     /TR:N /MODEM:N /OPTIMIZE:N /LINKBEAT:N ]

Each parameter must be of the structure "/keyword:value" and
        contain no blank spaces.

        For example: /iobase:300 /int:3

Command line configuration parameters are used to configure
the adapter using only the option settings you specify.
In most cases, any combination of parameters can be used.
Therefore, it is possible to modify only a few settings
        if needed.

         /AUTO
The /AUTO parameter configures the adapter automatically
based on the software's best estimate using interpreted
            system information.

        /IOBASE
            I/O Base Address
            Possible values - 200,210,220,230,240,250,260,270,280,
            290,2A0,2B0,2C0,2D0,2E0,2F0,300,310,320,330,340,350,360,
            370,380,390,3A0

        /INT
            Interrupt Level
            Possible values - 3,5,7,9,A,B,C,F
Using invalid Interrupt values will produce undesirable
            results.

        /TR
            Transceiver Type
Possible values - AUTO, TP, COAX

        /MODEM
            Maximum Interrupt Disable Time
            Possible values - NoModem, 1200, 2400, 9600, 19200, 38400

        /OPTIMIZE
            Network Driver Optimization
Possible values - DOS, WINDOWS, SERVER

        /LINKBEAT
Link beat disable/enable (pre-10BASE-T standard only)
            Possible values - ENABLE, DISABLE
To DISABLE linkbeat, use the /LINKBEAT:ENABLE switch.
To ENABLE linkbeat, use the /LINKBEAT:DISNABLE switch

NOTE: Try this setting ONLY if pre-10BASE-T standard hubs
                   are in use.

 Diagnostic tests
 ----------------

 Full Screen Windows Mode
 ------------------------
The diagnostic tests are only available in full-screen mode.
To run the diagnostic tests, type:

    CONFIG [Enter]

Select Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main menu.
Then select Diagnostic Tests option in the Configuration and
    Diagnostic menu.
