        Promise FastTrak Series Linux Driver Version 1.2.0.9
        Installation note for SuSE Linux 7.x  [07/13/2001]
             
             
[INTRODUCTION]
1.1 Foreword
       These driver diskettes only support SuSE Linux 7.1/7.2. They cann't
       be used on other Linux distributions for FastTrak Series.

1.2 How to make the Promise Diskettes
Boot Diskette - Get utility "rawrite.exe" from SuSE disk 1 , and extract
        boot.img to diskette by "rawrite.exe" on DOS-based PC.
Driver Diskette - Extract driver7x.tgz by issuing "tar" command.
	driver71.tgz and driver72.tgz are for SuSE 7.1/7.2 individually.
   

[INSTALLATION]
2.1 Install the FastTrak Series Linux Driver into an EXISTING SYSTEM
   2.1.1 If your Promise Controller is PDC20262/PDC20265(FastTrak 66
       /FastTrak 100 Lite) ,please change screen to text mode ,press
       TAB key and append parameters as Note 3.1 when "boot:" prompted
       on booting.
   2.1.2 Get driver "ft.o" from "update.tgz" on Promise Driver Diskette
       and load driver by issuing command "insmod ft.o" 

2.2 Install the FastTrak Series Linux Driver into an NEW SYSTEM
   2.2.1 Start the SuSE Install by booting with the "Promise Boot Diskette"
   2.2.2 At the ">>>  SuSE Linux 7.x  <<<" installation screen, a prompted
       labeled "boot:" will appear at the bottom of the screen. At the 
       prompt press the left "Alt" key.
   2.2.3 Syslinux prompts the user for an "Please insert the Driver Update
       floppy ...". Please insert the "Promise Driver Diskette" 
   2.2.4 Continue with the installation as normal. (NOTE 3.2)
   2.2.5 At the "Now booting your system" dialog box prompted, please press
       Alt-Ctrl-F2 and insert "Promise Driver Diskette" in the floppy drive.
   2.2.6 Issue commands to setup FastTrak Series Linux Driver ,
       # chroot /mnt
       # mount /dev/fd0 /floppy
       # cd /floppy
       # ./setup71-ft (or "./setup72-ft" for SuSE 7.1/7.2 individually) 
   2.2.7 Press Alt-Ctrl-F7 and continue with the installation as normal.
   2.2.8 After installation has completed , please re-boot system once.

   3.1 "linux ide0=0x1f0,0x3f6,14 ide1=0x170,0x376,15 ide2=0 ide3=0 ide4=0 ide5=0 ide6=0 ide7=0 ide8=0 ide9=0" or
       "linux_24 ide0=0x1f0,0x3f6,14 ide1=0x170,0x376,15 ide2=0 ide3=0 ide4=0 ide5=0 ide6=0 ide7=0 ide8=0 ide9=0" 
       In fact, the lilo parameters can be appended to "/etc/lilo.conf" .
       There is no necessary to key in parameters every times.
   3.2 When "Custom LILO installation" installation screen was shown, It is
       recommanded to enable "use the 'linear' option" for FastTrak adapter.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
