***************************************************************************** OS/2-NDIS2 ***************************************************************************** This file describes the features and use of the Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver for the IBM OS/2 operating system environment. It is divided into the following sections: Introduction Features Description Installing Your Symbios Ethernet Driver On an existing OS/2 system During a new OS/2 installation Configurable Driver Options ******************************* Introduction ********************************** The Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver is written to the Network Driver Interface Specification, Version 2.01. This is the native interface to all of the networking features designed into the IBM OS\2 operating system, including TCP/IP. OS/2 also provides the necessary software components to interface the Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver to popular server technologies, including Novell and Microsoft server and client platforms. * * * * * * * * * * * Features * * * * * * * * * * * * * o Supports MII Ethernet Interface at 10 and 100 megabit speeds o Supports DMA (Direct Memory Access) for high network speed and throughput o Supports Half or Full duplex Ethernet connections * * * * * * * * * * * Description * * * * * * * * * * * * The Symbios Ethernet solution consists of the device driver, ND885X.OS2, and the network interface file, ND885X.NIF. This driver enables OS/2 to connect to any Ethernet LAN using a 10 or 100 megabit Ethernet connection at either half or full duplex. ******************* Installing Your SYM53C885 OS/2 Driver ********************* The successful installation of the Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver requires some basic knowledge of the OS/2 DeskTop environment. It also requires that the person doing the installation has network administrator capabilities on the machine on which the Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet adapter is being installed. No information is provided concerning TCP/IP addressing, or Novell or Microsoft server or client setup or connection information. Please refer to the IBM OS/2 installation guide for any questions which you might have regarding these issues. First you need the Symbios Ethernet driver diskette, which has the files ND885X.OS2 and ND885X.NIF on it. If these files are not in the root directory of this diskette, determine where on the disk they are located and write down the path information for use at a later time. If they are in the root area of the diskette, proceed to the installation which matches your system requirements. * * * * Installing the Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver * * * * on a computer which is currently running OS/2. 1. Double click on the OS/2 System Icon from the OS/2 desktop. 2. Double click on the System Setup Icon in the OS/2 System-Icon View. 3. Double click on the MPTS Network Adapters and Protocol Services Icon in the System Setup-Icon View. 4. Click on Configure in the Multi-Protocol Transport Services window. 5. Select LAN adapters and protocols, and click on configure in the Configure window. 6. Click on Other adapters in the Adapter and Protocol Configuration window, under the Network Adapters area. 7. Enter the path to the files, ND885X.OS2 and ND885X.NIF, in the Copy Additional Network Adapter Drivers window. You recorded these files from the Symbios Ethernet driver diskette earlier in this section. 8. After entering the path, or if the files are in the root directory of the diskette, place the diskette in the A: drive and click OK. 8. Once the files are copied from the diskette, the Adapter and Protocol configuration window returns. Scroll through the list of Network Adapters and select the Symbios SYM53C885 Fast Ethernet Adapter (ND885X.OS2) and click ADD to install the driver. 9. Now install and configure the protocols that match your environment using the IBM OS/2 documentation, and exit from the MPTS program. 10. Reboot your computer in order for the change to take effect. * * * * Installing the Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver * * * * during the installation of OS/2 1. Using the IBM OS/2 documentation, begin the installation of OS/2. 2. During the networking installation section of the OS/2 install, use the Symbios Ethernet driver diskette when prompted for the network adapter driver. Make sure to provide the correct path information for the files, ND885X.OS2 and ND885X.NIF, which you recorded from the Symbios Ethernet driver diskette earlier in this section. 3. Install and configure the protocols which match your environment using the IBM OS/2 documentation. *************************** Configurable Driver Options ********************** The Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver, ND885X.OS2 has four configuration parameters. The configuration parameters available are: Media Speed, Duplex Mode, Ethernet Mode, and TPPMD ciphering. A short description of each option is provided, with default values, functions, and any impact its use may have on your system. The options described below are modified by running the OS/2 MPTS program described in the Installing Your SYM53C885 OS/2 Driver. Note: The SYM53C885 uses a process called auto-negotiation to determine network settings. If your network hardware does not support auto- negotiation, the MEDIA SPEED, ETHERNET MODE, and DUPLEX MODE options must be manually set to match your existing network configuration. Ask your network administrator for instructions if you have difficulty connecting to your network. To change any of the following settings, first begin the OS/2 MPTS program by the method which is defined in the Installing Your SYM53C885 OS/2 Driver section of this document. 1. When you are at the Adapter and Protocol Configuration window, select the Symbios SYM53C885 Fast Ethernet Adapter (ND885X.OS2) in the Current Configuration section and click EDIT. "The Parameters For the Symbios SYM53C885 Fast Ethernet Adapter (ND885X.OS2)" window displays each of the Configuration options. 2. To make a change, enter the new value inside the corresponding window, and click on the OK button when all selections have been made. In the event an incorrect parameter was entered, the OS/2 MPTS program will prompt you with a list of the acceptable choices. * * * Changes to the Media Speed Option * * * Use this option to set the required number of data bits that can be transmitted across the wire per second (network speed) for your network setup. The default value is Auto, which enables the auto-negotiation feature of the Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver. Note: This should only be changed if your network hardware does not support auto-negotiation. Valid options: 10, 100, Auto Function: Specify the network speed to use. Possible Impact: If specified incorrectly, networking may not work. * * * Changes to the Duplex Mode Option * * * This option provides the ability to specify duplex support for your network. Half duplex allows the network to either transmit or receive data at any given time, while full duplex allows simultaneous transmitting and receiving of data at any given time. The default value is Auto, which enables the auto-negotiation feature of the Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver. Note: This should only be changed if your network hardware does not support auto-negotiation. Valid options: Full, Half, Auto Function: Specify the duplex mode to use. Possible Impact: If specified incorrectly, networking may not work. Note: The Duplex Mode and Media Speed must match the network settings. For example, if the network is 10 megabits per second at half duplex, then the adapter must match this setup in order for data to be transmitted or received. * * * Changes to ETHERNET MODE option * * * This option provides the ability to set which media interface to use. The default value is Auto. This enables the auto-negotiation feature of the Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver. Note: This should only be changed if your network hardware does not support auto-negotiation. Valid options: Auto, MII, TPPMD Function: Set media interface Note: Currently, the SYM53C885 supports only the MII interface. The TPPMD option can only operate when a TPPMD transceiver is attached. Possible Impact: If specified incorrectly, networking may not work. * * * Changes to the TPPMD Cipher Option * * * This option provides the ability to turn off the ciphering function of the TP-PMD media interface. Currently, the SYM53C885 supports only the MII interface, so changes to the TPPMD cipher option will not affect the Symbios SYM53C885 Ethernet device driver.Download Driver Pack
