***************************************************************************** DOS-ODI Client ***************************************************************************** This file describes the features and use of the Symbios Netware Ethernet device driver for the Novell NetWare DOS-ODI Client operating system environment. This file is divided into the following sections: Introduction Features Description Installing Your SYM53C885 NetWare Driver Reconfiguring Driver Options Using the NET.CFG File Please note that there are Novell support files that must be used in conjunction with this driver. Symbios does not provide the support files. These files can be obtained from the Novell web site. ******************************** Introduction ********************************** The Symbios SYM53C885 driver for the Novell NetWare DOS-ODI operating system allows you to utilize a Symbios Ethernet controller with Netware. The Symbios software, coupled with a Symbios SYM53C885 controller, provide an Ethernet solution within the NetWare environment. A single driver is provided for the Novell NetWare DOS-ODI environment. This document explains how to install and use the Symbios driver for Netware. * * * * * * * * * * * Features * * * * * * * * * * * Supports MII Ethernet Interface at 10 and 100 megabit speeds. Supports DMA (Direct Memory Access) for high network speed and throughput. Supports Half or Full duplex Ethernet connections. Can be used with either VLM or NETX Novell support files. * * * * * * * * * * * Description * * * * * * * * * * The Symbios Ethernet solution consists of the device driver, 885ODIC.COM. The support files, including: LSL.COM, IPXODI.COM, VLM.EXE, and NET.CFG, must be obtained separately from Novell. This driver provides the ability to connect to a Novell network using a 10 or 100 megabit Ethernet connection at either half or full duplex. ******************* Installing Your SYM53C885 NetWare Driver ****************** The Novell support files are required to complete this installation. These files can be accessed on the Novell web site at the location www.novell.com. After opening the home page, click on download to see a list of software packages. Enter in the filename DOS to retreive the VLM executable file: VLM121_2.EXE. Enter in the filename LSI to retreive the LSI.COM file: ODI33e.EXE Enter in the filenname IPXODI to retreive the IPXODI.COM file: PNWUPD.EXE These executable files contain other Novell support files that are also required. Download this files to your hard drive. You must load the Symbios Logic SYM53C885 885ODIC.COM driver once for each Symbios controller present in the system. This driver may be loaded directly from the DOS command line or from a batch file (such as AUTOEXEC.BAT). These instructions are for a VLM configuration using default settings. Additionally, the net configuration file, NET.CFG, is the file to configure the driver using the options described below. Load these files in the following order: LSL 885ODIC IPXODI VLM * * * * * * * * * * Using the NET.CFG file * * * * * * * * * The configuration for the SYM53C885 DOS ODI Client driver is contained in the NET.CFG file. The following illustrates an example of the NET.CFG file for the Symbios SYM53C885: Link Driver 885ODIC Protocol IPX 8137 ETHERNET_II Frame ETHERNET_II Phymode MII Duplex Half Speed 100 Link Support Buffers 4 1500 MemPool 4096 NetWare DOS Requester FIRST NETWORK DRIVER = F NETWARE PROTOCOL = NDS BIND Note: If this information is not provided in the NET.CFG file, the driver will default to the Ethernet 802.2 frame type. Make sure all lines following "Link Driver 885ODIC" are indented by at least one space. If these lines are not indented, the driver will ignore the commands. A description of the various parameters that may be used in the NET.CFG file follows: * * * Using the PHYMODE * * * This option provides the ability to set which media interface to use. Default value: Auto Valid options: Auto, MII, TP_PMD Function: Set media interface * * * Using the Cipheroff Option * * * This option provides the ability to turn off the ciphering function of the TP-PMD media interface. This option is only valid when PHYMODE is set to TP-PMD or Auto. * * * Using the Duplex Support Option * * * This option provides the ability to specify duplex support for your network. Half duplex allows the network to either transmit or receive data at any given time, while full duplex allows simultaneous transmitting and receiving of data at any given time. Default value: Auto Valid options: Full, Half, Auto Function: Specify the duplex mode to use. Possible Impact: If specified incorrectly, networking may not work. * * * Using the Speed Option * * * Use this option to set the required number of data bits that can be transmitted across the wire per second (network speed) for your network setup. Default value: Auto Valid options: 10, 100, Auto Function: Specify the network speed to use. Possible Impact: If specified incorrectly, networking may not work. Note: The Duplex and Speed must match the network settings. For example, if the network is 10 megabits per second at half duplex, then the adapter must match this setup in order for data to be transmitted or received. * * * * * * * * * Reconfiguring Driver Options * * * * * * * To reconfigure driver options, you must follow these steps: 1. To unload all instances of the driver, unload the support files and driver in the opposite order that you loaded them by typing: vlm /u ipxodi /u 885odic /u lsl /u 2. To reload each instance of the driver, type: 885odic.comDownload Driver Pack
After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
