Readme File =========== This file contains additional information to supplement the manual. Please read all the sections below before you proceed with the installation. The information in this file is organized as follows: 1. Installation Requirements 2. Uninstallation Notes 3. DOS Environment Settings 4. Audio Driver Support in Windows 95 DOS Box 5. Configuring Creative IDE CD-ROM drive in DOS Mode 6. BLASTER Settings in DOS Mode 7. Set up Mic-In Maximum Volume 8. Acknowledgments 1. INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS To install all the Windows 95 audio applications, your system must have at least 3MBytes of hard disk space for the application files and an additional 2MBytes of working space. You may need more space if the data in the disk is in compressed form. 2. UNINSTALLATION NOTES Close all audio applications before uninstalling the audio software. The uninstallation program will not delete any audio application that is still running while the uninstallation is in progress. Neither will the program delete any files that are added to the Audio directory after the initial software installation. If one of these cases happens, you need to manually delete the files after the uninstallation process is finished. 3. DOS ENVIRONMENT SETTINGS Some existing DOS programs require the presence of MIDI and SOUND environment settings in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file before they can work. The Setup program, when executed, will add the SET MIDI and SET SOUND environment lines to the beginning portion of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. 4. AUDIO DRIVER SUPPORT IN WINDOWS 95 DOS BOX Some DOS applications are developed using Creative's Sound Blaster Developer Kit. To use these applications, low-level audio device DOS drivers must be loaded. To load these DOS drivers: 1. Add the following lines to the CONFIG.SYS file: DEVICE=<C:\sound>\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220 I:5 D:1 H:5 /WIN95 DEVICE=<C:\sound>\DRV\CTMMSYS.SYS where a. <C:\sound> is the audio software's directory. b. The /BLASTER parameter specifies the audio card's base I/O port address (A), interrupt request line (I), low 8-bit DMA channel (D) and high 16-bit DMA channel (H). c. The settings in the /BLASTER parameter must tally with the actual settings allocated by Windows 95. To find out the actual settings, go into Windows 95 DOS box, type SET and press <Enter> at the DOS prompt. 2. Open the CONFIG.TXT file in the audio software directory. It contains several lines, one of which is: BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6 where the values after the A, I, D and H are the actual settings to be used for the /BLASTER parameter. 3. Copy these settings into the /BLASTER parameter in CONFIG.SYS. NOTE: The audio software directory in the file has already been updated by the installation program. 5. CONFIGURING CREATIVE IDE CD-ROM DRIVE IN DOS MODE If you want to connect a Creative IDE CD-ROM drive to the IDE interface of a Creative audio card, you need to follow the steps outlined in either 5.1, 5.2 or 5.3 (below) to enable the CD-ROM drive to work in DOS mode: 5.1 Using the "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode" option 1. Open the DOSSTART.TXT file in the audio software directory. It contains the following lines: <C:\dir>\CTLOAD <C:\dir>\DRV\SBIDE.SYS /D:MSCD001 /V /P:1E8,11,3EE <C:\win95dir>\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /V /M:15 where a. DOSSTART.BAT is a batch file found in the Windows directory. It is executed each time you shut down to MSDOS mode. b. <C:\dir> is the audio software directory. c. <C:\win95dir> is the Windows directory. 2. Copy these lines into the DOSSTART.BAT file. NOTE: These lines specify the DOS CD-ROM drivers. The audio directory in the file has been updated by the installation program. You don't need to change any parameter. 3. Click "Shut down" in the Start menu. 4. Choose the "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode" option and click OK to go to DOS. 5.2 Using MS-DOS icon and current MS-DOS configuration 1. Follow the steps 1 and 2 outlined in 5.1 to change DOSSTART.BAT. 2. Right-click on the MS-DOS icon and choose Properties from the shortcut menu that appears. 3. Click the Program tabbed page, followed by the Advanced button. 4. Check the MS-DOS mode box and make sure that the "Use current MS-DOS configuration" option is selected. 5. Click OK to close the dialog box and double- click the MS-DOS icon to go to DOS. 5.3 Using MS-DOS icon and new MS-DOS configuration 1. Right-click on the MS-DOS icon and choose Properties from the shortcut menu that appears. 2. Click the Program tabbed page, followed by the Advanced button. 3. Check the MS-DOS mode box and make sure that the "Specify a new MS-DOS configuration" option is selected. 4. Add the following lines to the new AUTOEXEC.BAT file: <C:\win95dir>\CTCM <C:\dir>\CTLOAD <C:\dir>\DRV\SBIDE.SYS /D:MSCD001 /V /P:1E8,11,3EE <C:\win95dir>\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /V /M:15 where a. <C:\dir> is the audio software directory. b. <C:\win95dir> is the Windows directory. 5. Click OK to close the dialog box. And double- click the MS-DOS icon to go to DOS. NOTE: When you open a DOS Mode session, the system will close all other active Windows-based or DOS-based programs. You can return to Windows 95 by entering EXIT at the DOS prompt. 6. BLASTER SETTINGS IN DOS MODE Whenever you change your audio hardware configuration manually, the BLASTER environment in DOS Mode will be valid only after you have rebooted the system once. However, if you proceed to DOS Mode without rebooting, you need to run CTCM.EXE which is in your Windows directory. This program makes sure that the BLASTER environment settings tally with the actual hardware settings. 7. Set up Mic-In Maximum Volume To set the Mic-In maximum volume to their desirable value. The following sections describe how this is achieved. 7.1 Windows 95 SB16.VXD version 4.33 and above will look for a key in the Windows 95 Registry to determine what is the Mic-In maximum volume to use. The key is: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Creative Tech\DriverDefaults\sb16.vxd\CTL0080\MicInMaxVol = xx HKLM\SOFTWARE\Creative Tech\DriverDefaults\sb16.vxd\CTL00D0\MicInMaxVol = xx where xx is the desirable Mic-In Maximum volume level ranging from 0 to ff in hex. To ease the process, a registry file named MICINMAX.REG is created and can be retrieved from this document in the section 7.2. Right-click on this file in Windows Explorer and select Merge. The registry key mentioned above will be added to Windows 95 Registry. 7.2 MICINMAX.REG File for Windows 95 The MICINMAX.REG file is embedded below: To retrieve this .REG file, right-click on the above icon and select Edit Package Package. This will run the Object Packager. Go to the File menu, select Save Contents..., and you can save the file anywhere you like. Do remember to save it with extension .REG. The MICINMAX.REG file contains the following lines: REGEDIT4 // you may change the MixInMaxVol to your desirable value [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Creative Tech\DriverDefaults\sb16.vxd\CTL0080] "MicInMaxVol"=hex:ff [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Creative Tech\DriverDefaults\sb16.vxd\CTL00D0] "MicInMaxVol"=hex:ff 8.
