Installing the 3Com WinModem Drivers

NOTE: This procedure is only for use with Dell Dimension computers with a Dell-installed 3Com WinModem.

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click the U.S. Robotics x2 WinModem Voice icon.

   If the Warning window appears with a message stating that there is no Winmodem device in your system, but that some corrupted information was found, perform the following steps:

   a. Click OK to restart the system.

      Windows rebuilds its driver information database, and then the Add New Hardware Wizard window appears.

   b. Skip to step 5.

   If no warning message appears, the Properties for U.S. Robotics x2 Winmodem Voice window appears.

3. Click the Uninstall button.

4. Click OK to restart the system.

   Windows rebuilds its driver information database, and then the Add New Hardware Wizard window appears.

5. Click Next> to let Windows search for a U.S. Robotics Winmodem Voice driver.

6. Click the Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) radio button and then click Next>.

7. Check the Specify a location box, and then uncheck all other boxes.

8. Click the Browse... button, and then navigate to the directory where the downloaded
   file was extracted to.

9. Click Next> to accept the driver location. Should be "....\modem\3com\v90"

10. Click Next> to let Windows search for a U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Win.

    The Copying Files window appears.

11. When Windows has finished installing the driver, click Finish.

12. Click Next> to let Windows search for a Wave Device for Voice Modem.

13. Click the Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) radio button and then click Next>.

14. Check the Specify a location box, and then uncheck all other boxes.

15. Repeat steps 8 & 9

16. Click Next> to let Windows search for a U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Win.

17. When Windows has finished installing the driver, click Finish.

18. Restart your computer.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
