3Com Megahertz 10/100 LAN + 56K Modem PC Card
(3CCFEM556 PC Card family)
While the SETUP.EXE will guide a majority of customers
through properly installing the LAN+Modem card under
Windows NT, these instructions will assist in those cases
when the SETUP.EXE may not work properly with the
computer's configuration. This document describes how to
configure the LAN+Modem card for use with Windows NT v4.0
(Server or Workstation) and Windows NT v3.51 without using
the SETUP.EXE program.

General Information
-------------------
If you have Windows NT v3.50 or earlier, you will need to
upgrade your system to v3.51 or later. Versions prior to
Windows NT v3.51 do not have PC card support, and therefore
do not support the LAN+Modem card. You will also have to
load Service Pack 3.0 to properly use the card in Windows
NT 4.0. Please contact your Network Administrator or
Microsoft for information on obtaining and installing
Service Pack 3.
NOTE: The following instructions assume that you have not
installed any other network adapter in the machine.
If you have been using a network connection on your
computer, some of the following instructions may not
apply or may produce different results. Refer with
your MIS department for instructions.

Windows NT 4.0 Driver Installation
----------------------------------
NOTE: The LAN+Modem card requires that Service Pack 3 (or
a later version) be installed on your computer.
Contact your Network Administrator, your laptop
vendor, or Microsoft if you do not have this.
Before installing the driver, make sure that PCMCIA
services are running on your system.
- Select the Device option from the Control Panel.
- Scroll down the Device list and search for PCMCIA. The
device status field should indicate that STATUS is set
for Started and STARTUP is set for Boot.
To install the LAN driver:
1. Select Network from the Control Panel.
If there are no other network drivers loaded, Windows
NT may prompt you to install networking at this point.
If so, click "YES." Proceed to "First Time
Installation" following this section.
2. Open the Adapters tab and click Add.
3. Select Have Disk.
You are prompted for the software provided by the
hardware manufacturer. Insert Installation Diskette 2.
4. Type the following directory path and click OK:
a:\
5. Select 3Com Megahertz 10/100 + 56K PC Card
and click OK.
6. At the Network Settings prompt, set the following
options:
- I/O Port Address
- Memory Address
- Network Interrupt (identical to modem interrupt)
- COM Port - The communications port used by the modem.
Be sure to select an unused COM port. Make sure the
port is not being used by another device, such as a
built-in infrared port.
7. After configuring the network settings, click Continue,
then click Close. Remove Installation Diskette 2.
Shut down and reboot the computer for the new hardware
settings to take effect. After the system has rebooted,
put Installation Disk 2 in the floppy drive.
8. Open the Control Panels and select Modem. Select
"Do not detect modem..." and click Next.
Select Have Disk. Put Installation Disk 2 in
the floppy drive and click OK.
From the list of models, select 3Com Megahertz 10/100
LAN + 56K Modem PC Card and click Next.
Select a port for the modem. Make sure the "Selected
ports" option is enabled and highlight the port from
the list. This port should match the COM port setting
made previously in Step 6 above. If this setting is
not available, there may be a resource conflict
with the settings chosen in Step 6. Try using
different resources.
If you do not know what resources are available,
run CONFIG.EXE from Installation Disk 2 or run
Programs/Administrative Tools/NT Diagnostics.
9. Click NEXT.
10. At the Local Information prompt, enter the appropriate
values for the requested fields and click NEXT.
11. Click FINISH to exit the program.
When these steps are complete, you must restart your
computer. Remove Installation Disk 2 from Drive A and
click the Restart button.
NOTE: After installation, reinstall Service Pack 3.

Notes for First-Time Installations
----------------------------------
1. Choose Wired to the network (Add Remote access later;
Consult Your NT Documentation for further information)
and click NEXT.
2. Click on the Select from list button
3. Click on the Have Disk button and insert Installation
Disk 2 into Drive A:
4. Choose the A:\ directory.
5. Choose your adapter and Select OK
6. Click Next.
7. Choose the appropriate protocols for your network and click NEXT.
Consult you Network Admin if you are unsure which protocols to
choose. If you choose TCP/IP you will receive some dialog boxes
later in the installation to configure the TCP/IP settings.
8. Click Next and Next again.
9. The Network Setup Wizard will usually prompt with a
Windows NT Setup dialog at this point. Type in the
location of the Windows NT source files. These are
normally in an i386 directory. For example D:\i386
off of the Windows NT 4.0 CDROM. Then click Continue.
10. Then type in the location of Installation Diskette 2
Files as in Step 4. Click Continue.
11. At the Network Settings prompt, set the following options:
- I/O Port Address
- Memory Address
- Network Interrupt (identical to modem interrupt)
- COM Port - The communications port used by the modem.
Be sure to select an unused COM port. Make sure the
port is not being used by another device, such as a
built-in infrared port.
12. After configuring the network settings, click Continue,
(you may get the TCP/IP configuration at this point)
13. Click Next and Next again.
14. You can configure the adapter to attach to a Workgroup
or Domain. This example will assume that you are
attaching to a Workgroup.
Type in your Computer Name and Workgroup.
Click Next
15. Click Finish
Remove Installation Diskette 2.
Restart the computer by clicking Yes for the new
hardware settings to take effect.
After the system has rebooted, reinsert Installation
Disk 2 in the floppy drive and click OK.
16. Open the Control Panels and select Modem. Select Do
not detect modem, I will select from a list and click
Next. Select Have Disk. Put Installation Disk 2
in the floppy drive and click OK.
From the list of models, select 3Com Megahertz 10/100 +
56K Modem PC Card (your version of the LAN+Modem card)
and click Next.
Select a port for the modem. Make sure the "Selected ports"
option is enabled and highlight the port from the list.
This port should match the COM port setting made
previously in Step 11 above. If that port is not
available, there is probably a resource conflict with
resources chosen in 11. Also, Be sure that at least
Service Pack 3 has been run on this machine.
If you do not know what resources are available,
run CONFIG.EXE from Installation Disk 2 or run
Programs/Administrative Tools/NT Diagnostics.
17. Click NEXT.
18. At the Local Information prompt, enter the appropriate
values for the requested fields and click NEXT.
19. Click FINISH to exit the program.
When these steps are complete, you must restart your
computer. Remove Installation Disk 2 from Drive A and
click the Restart button.
NOTE: After installation, reinstall Service Pack 3.

Instructions for Windows NT v. 3.51
-----------------------------------
Before installing the network driver, you should know the
following:
- Transport used in the Microsoft Windows Network
- Name of the NT Server domain or Windows 95/WFW 3.11
Workgroup to which you belong.
Also, for a successful installation, you will need:
- Windows NT system installation files (either on
hard disk, floppy diskettes, or CD)
- The LAN+Modem card and Installation Disk 2
1. Turn on the computer and log on.
2. Go to the MAIN group and select the Control Panel icon.
3. From the Control Panel, select the Network icon.
4. When the system prompts:
Windows NT Networking is not installed. Install it now?
Click YES.
5. This opens the Windows NT Setup window. Be prepared to
enter the name of the drive or directory where your NT
system installation files reside. When ready, click
CONTINUE.
6. Click DO NOT DETECT. Windows NT does not fully support
Plug and Play and cannot automatically detect the
LAN+Modem card.
Click Continue when asked whether to Continue or
Remote.
7. When the ADD NETWORK ADAPTER dialog box appears, it
displays a list of adapter names. Click the down arrow
until you can select:
<Other> Requires disk from manufacturer
8. When the list of adapters closes, click CONTINUE. This
opens the INSERT DISK dialog box and prompts you for
the location of a driver file. The driver file is
located on Installation Disk 2 in the root directory.
Type the directory path, A:\ and click OK.
9. Select 3Com Megahertz 10/100 + 56K PC CARD
and click OK.
10. Enter the settings for the LAN+Modem card. Since
Windows NT currently does not support Plug and Play,
you must supply the appropriate settings for the card.
In most cases, the default settings will work, but if
you are unsure about what settings to use, ask your
system administrator or MIS department. When the
settings are entered, click OK to open the Windows NT
Setup dialog box.
If you do not know what resources are available,
run CONFIG.EXE from Installation Disk 2 or run
Programs/Administrative Tools/NT Diagnostics.
11. In the Windows NT Setup dialog box, select the network
transport protocol that Windows NT will use. The
TCP/IP transport will already be selected for use.
If you have no specific reason to use TCP/IP,
you may delete it now.
In this dialog box, select the transport appropriate
for the network client. If you are not sure, ask your
system administrator or MIS department.
When Windows NT Setup is complete, click OK to open the
Network Settings dialog box.
12. Click CONTINUE to open the Windows NT Setup screen.
Supply the name of the drive or directory where your NT
system installation files reside and click CONTINUE.
This returns you to the Network Settings dialog box.
13. If you are prompted to configure IPX/SPX protocols,
provide the values requested (for most networks, AUTO
DETECT and FRAME TYPE settings), and click OK.
14. The next window is the Domain/Workgroup Settings
window. Select the appropriate domain or workgroup
name for Windows Networking and click OK. (This name
has nothing to do with the Novell client.)
When these steps are complete, you must restart your
computer. Remove Installation Disk 2 from Drive A and
press the Restart button.
Your modem will be assigned to the COM port selected during
installation. Be sure to check for resource conflicts.

Download Driver Pack
After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
