Configuration and Diagnostic Instructions Summary

This file contains information on running the
configuration and diagnostic utilities provided on
Installation Disk 2. Topics include:

 - Overview
 - Running DOS CONFIG under Windows 95
 - Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic utility
 - Diagnostic Tests
 - Where to Get Additional Information

============================================================
Overview
--------

The configuration portion of the CONFIG program lets you
change the configuration parameters for the adapter to
accommodate a specific operating environment.

The diagnostic portion of CONFIG ensures that the adapter
is installed correctly and functioning properly. The basic
tests check the physical components, connectors, and
circuitry of the adapter and require only that the adapter
be installed in the computer. The Echo tests check the
adapter's ability to transmit data on the network and
require that the adapter be connected to a network.

The computer containing the adapter to be configured or
tested must be running DOS only.

============================================================
Running DOS CONFIG Under Windows 95
-----------------------------------

The CONFIG runs in enabler mode only. It cannot access
Windows 95 Card and Socket Services. The point enabler
should operate normally provided your laptop has an Intel
(or Intel-compatible) PC Card controller. If you try to run
CONFIG with an incompatible controller, the program will
report that it could not detect the LAN+Modem card.

============================================================
Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic utility
-------------------------------------------------

There are two ways to start the program:

1. From the CONFIG.EXE program, by selecting Configuration
and Diagnostic Program on the main menu.

2. Manually, from the root directory of Installation
Disk 2, by typing the following command:

   CONFIG [command keyword] [parameter list]

CONFIG represents the 3Com Configuration and Diagnostic
Program name. The brackets indicate that the command
keyword and parameter list are optional.

CONFIG without any arguments invokes the program in full
   windows mode.

The LAN+Modem card can be configured in either full-screen
windows mode or command-line mode.

Full Screen Windows Mode
------------------------

To configure the adapter using full-screen windowing, type:

        CONFIG [Enter].

Select Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main
menu. Then select the Configure Adapter option in the
Configuration and Diagnostic menu.

Command Line Mode
-----------------

The Command Line Mode can produce anomolous results. We
recommend that you use full-screen mode (see above)
whenever possible.

Command Line with Explicit Parameters
-------------------------------------

Command syntax:

  CONFIG CONFIGURE [ /AUTO /IOBASE:N /INT:N /OPTIMIZE:N]

Each parameter must be of the structure "/keyword:value"
and contain no blank spaces. For example:

        /iobase:300 /int:3

Command line configuration parameters are used to configure
the adapter using only the option settings you specify. In
most cases, any combination of parameters can be used.
Therefore, it is possible to modify only a few settings if
needed.

/AUTO The /AUTO parameter configures the adapter
automatically based on the software's best estimate
        using interpreted system information.

/IOBASE I/O Base Address. Possible values include:
        200, 210, 220, 230, 240, 250, 260, 270, 280, 290,
        2A0, 2B0, 2C0, 2D0, 2E0, 2F0, 300, 310, 320, 330,
        340, 350, 360, 370, 380, 390, 3A0

/INT Interrupt Level. Possible values include:
        3, 5, 7, 9, A, B, C, F

/OPTIMIZE Network Driver Optimization. Possible values include:
        DOS, WINDOWS, SERVER

============================================================
Diagnostic tests
----------------

Diagnostic tests are available only in full-screen mode.
To run the diagnostic tests:

1. Type CONFIG [Enter].

2. Select Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main
   menu.

3. Then select Diagnostic Tests option in the Configuration
   and Diagnostic menu.

Where to Get Additional Information
-----------------------------------

If the adapter fails any of the diagnostic tests, see the
TROUBLE.TXT file in the \HELP directory on Installation
Disk 2 for troubleshooting procedures.

The SUPPORT.TXT file in the \HELP subdirectory on
Installation Disk 2 provides information about obtaining
product support for the adapter.
