This README.TXT file contains information to help you set up your Sportster modem and avoid common problem areas when using your PC Card. --------------------------------------------------------------- TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. If No Card and Socket Services are Found During Setup. 2. If You Receive the Message "Comport Not Available" During Setup 3. If You Receive the Message "Unable to Set Comm Port" During Setup 4. Using the Diagnostic Software 5. Disabling IBM Internal Modems 6. Computers with Nonstandard IRQs --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. If No Card and Socket Services are Found During Setup Express Setup can configure your PC Card only if Card and Socket Services are installed and functioning correctly, and resources (e.g., IO ports, memory windows, IRQs) are available. When these two requirements are met, Setup's Express Mode will determine a configuration for you. If Card and Socket Services are not installed or are not functioning correctly, Express Setup will be grayed out and you will not be able to select it--you must use the Custom Setup. This means you must specify the COM port, IRQ, and memory exclusions you want your Megahertz modem to use. This information should be in your computer's manual. --------------------------------------------------------------- 2. If You Receive the Message "Comport not Available" During Setup Computers with Databook controllers may give a false "Comport not Available" error message during installation. If you receive this message and are installing your Megahertz modem in a computer with a Databook controller, ignore the message. The controller type should be located in your computer's manual. --------------------------------------------------------------- 3. If You Receive the Message "Unable to Set Comm Port" During Setup Computers with Vadem controllers may give a false "Unable to Set Comm Port" error message during installation. If you receive this message and are installing your Megahertz modem in a computer with a Vadem controller, ignore the message. The controller type should be located in your computer's manual. --------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Using the Diagnostic Software DIAGNOSE.EXE allows you to easily collect information about your computer and any inserted PC Cards. The information is then used to verify that your system is running correctly, or to fix any problems. To use DIAGNOSE, enter DIAGNOSE and any of the following flags you want to use with it at the DOS prompt. The correct format is as follows: DIAGNOSE /A /D=directory /L /M /? filename All flags are optional. The flags are as follows: /A Print all information without any user interaction /D=directory Send or receive files to the specified directory /L Test LAN functionality even if not running under DOS /M Print in monochrome /? Print out this list of available flags filename Save the program results in the specified file When you enter DIAGNOSE at the DOS prompt, a screen will appear that explains what DIAGNOSE is, how to get the results, and where the results of this session are being stored. Press any key to go to the main DIAGNOSE menu, where you can select the information you need. --------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Disabling IBM Internal Modems If you are using an IBM Thinkpad 755CSE or other IBM computer that has an internal modem, you must disable it in order to use your PC Card. To do this, follow these steps: A. Load Windows B. Open the IBM Thinkpad Setup Group C. Open the DSP Icon D. Remove the check from the Telephony Function E. Save F. Reboot the computer --------------------------------------------------------------- 6.
