CONTENTS ======== 1) Description 2) New Features 3) Requirements 4) Installation Instructions 5) Special Software Notes 6) Machine Specific Notes 7) Nortel Networks Technical Support 1) DESCRIPTION =========== This release of the BayStack 650/ BayStack 660 in 802.11 mode adapter signifies a change in the wireless LAN industry, supporting the IEEE 802.11 standard. 802.11 compliance means that the BayStack adapter will interoperate with other 802.11 compliant systems, provided that the systems match. 802.11 specified both Frequency Hopping and Direct Sequence modulation techniques. These systems are not interoperable, even if supplied by the same vendor. This release includes new firmware and software not available in previous releases. Be sure to read Section 3) Requirements, if you are using older Bay Networks or Netwave Technologies products. 2) NEW FEATURES ============ This release of the BayStack 600 Series Windows Utilities features: Release 3.40: - New, integrated installer, complete with an integrated uninstaller. These updated programs greatly simplify the installation process, and automatically install or remove both the driver and the Windows utilities. - New utilities for management of the 802.11 Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption keys. - The Site Survey utility includes new features for forcing connection to a specific Access Point and the ability to disable auto-roaming (a diagnostic aid). - IP Subnet roaming enhancements (ASPROAM.EXE) that can (optionally) provide pop-up notification of subnet changes and automatic IP address release/ renewal (on DHCP based networks) when then mobile station roams between APs on different IP subnets. - The "properties" utility is now called "Hot Switch Wireless Network Select". This program allows you to change the current wireless network selection on the fly. The program also uses a new user interface that eases the task of selecting and storing of common network IDs. Release 3.20: - new, modernized installer, complete with an uninstaller. - name change to Bay Networks. Features common to the v3.0x series software: - 32 bit versions of the utilities for use with Windows 95 and NT. - A new utility for Windows 95, ASPSTA32, which shows the wireless LAN status in real-time in the task bar and is designed to work with the 802.11 products. 3) REQUIREMENTS ============ If using this release of BayStack 650/ BayStack 660 PC Card software with older Bay Networks or Netwave Technologies Netwave-mode products, the firmware in all Access Points must be upgraded to at least APFIRM 3.00. This will only work with the AirSurfer Plus and BayStack 650 Access Points. Physical inspection is the most accurate method to determine which Access Point you have. The only version of Access Point that can be upgraded from Netwave-mode to 802.11-mode is labeled either AirSurfer Plus or Bay Networks BayStack 650 Access Point. The only PC Card Adapters that are upgradeable to the 802.11 firmware are those that are labeled "AirSurfer Plus" or "BayStack 650". The firmware in all such PC Card adapters must be upgraded to at least version 3.00. The latest versions of firmware can be obtained by contacting Technical Support or via the Nortel Networks' website (see below). To upgrade to a new version of the Windows Utilities, the existing versions of the utilites that are installed on the computer MUST FIRST BE SHUTDOWN. In particular, the ASPSTA32 application, which resides in the taskbar must be shutdown to avoid a conflict with the ASPMAL32.DLL file. See the instructions below for a description of how to shutdown the ASPSTA32 application. 4) INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ========================= - Run the SETUP.EXE program to install both the Windows driver and the Windows Utility programs. 5) SPECIAL SOFTWARE NOTES ====================== ASPSTA32.EXE ============ This program displays the wireless LAN status in real-time in the Windows 95 task bar. Moving the pointer over the icon pops up a small window that summarizes the status. Double-clicking on the icon launches the Connection Quality application, which displays a little more detail on the status of the LAN. Double-clicking anywhere in the Connection Quality window launches the Site Survey application, which displays even more information about the status of the wireless LAN. Thus, one can drill down to more and more detailed information. NOTE: Since ASPSTA32 resides in the Windows 95 task bar, it runs in the background, even when the wireless LAN adapter is not inserted into the PC Card slot. To exit the ASPSTA32 application, right-click on the icon in the task bar and select "Close" from the popup menu. If the icon is not currently displayed in the task bar, the application can be exited by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, selecting the "Aspsta32" entry, then clicking the "End Task" button. The ASPSTA32 application MUST BE SHUTDOWN in one of the two ways described above PRIOR to updating the Windows utilities with a new release. 6) MACHINE SPECIFIC NOTES ====================== None (with respect to the Windows utilities). 7) NORTEL NETWORKS TECHNICAL SUPPORT ================================= To obtain technical support for your Nortel Networks product, please call the appropriate number listed below and use Express Routing Code (ERC) 178: Europe, Middle East, Africa +33-4-92-966-968 Asia Pacific +61-2-9927-8800 China 800-810-5000 North America 1-800-2LANWAN (1-800-252-6926) Please also visit our Web site at http://www.nortelnetworks.com/.
