******   U.S. Robotics 56K Message Modem update  ******

This file is also located in the "C:\Program Files\U.S. Robotics\ControlCenter\U.S. Robotics 56K Message Modem" folder.

There are three sections to this Readme; take the time to read them completely before updating your modem.

1. Firmware update 
2. Driver update
3. Internet Call Notification (ICN) update


Section 1:

The modem flash update process will automatically begin upon the completion of
the current download process.

Once the firmware update process is completed, you need to update the driver as well.
Go to Section 2 and follow the instructions.


Section 2:

Exit ControlCenter.

Specific operating system procedures are listed below.

Windows XP Users
****************
Note: Log in to an account with administrator rights to update the modem driver.

- Open the Windows Control Panel.
	(Click Windows "Start" and "Control Panel")
  	 or
	(Click Windows "Start", "Settings", and "Control Panel")
- Double-click the "Phone and Modem Options" icon.
	(If you do not see the "Phone and Modems options" icon,
	 click "Switch to Classic View" on the left side of the Control Panel window.)
- Click the Modems tab and select "56K Message Modem External European PnP".
- Click "Properties".
- Select the "Drivers" tab.
- Click "Update Driver".
- Select "Install from a list or specific location" and click "Next".
- Select "Don't Search" and click "Next".
- Click "Have Disk" and click "Browse".
- Browse to "C:\Program Files\U.S. Robotics\ControlCenter\U.S. Robotics 56K Message Modem" and click "Open".
- Click "OK" and click "Next".
- A "Hardware Installation" window may appear.
  If it does, click "Continue Anyway" to proceed with the installation.
- Click "Finish" to complete the update procedure.


Windows Me Users

- Right-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and click "Properties".
- Click the Device Manager tab and double-click the "Modem" icon.
- Double-click "56K Message Modem External European PnP" and select the "Driver" tab.
- Click "Update Driver".
- Select "Specify the location of the driver".
- Click "Next".
- Select "Specify a location" and click "Browse".
- Browse to "C:\Program Files\U.S. Robotics\ControlCenter\U.S. Robotics 56K Message Modem" and click "OK".
- Click "Next".
- Click "Next".
- Click "Finish" to complete the update procedure.


Windows 2000 Users

Note: Log in with administrator rights to update the modem driver.

- Right-click the "My Computer" icon on your
  desktop and click "Properties".
- Click the Hardware tab, click "Device Manager", and then 
double-click "Modems".
- Double-click "56K Message Modem External European PnP" and select the Driver tab.
- Click "Update Driver".
- Click "Next".
- Make sure that "Display a list of the known drivers for this device..." is selected
and click "Next".
- Click "Have Disk".
- Browse to "C:\Program Files\U.S. Robotics\ControlCenter\U.S. Robotics 56K Message Modem" and
  click "Open".
- Click "OK".
- Select "U.S. Robotics 56K Message V.92".
- Click "Next".
- Click "Next".
- A "Digital Signature Not Found" warning may appear.
  If it does, click "Yes" to proceed with the installation.
- Click "Finish" to complete the update procedure.

Note: You must now modify your dial up connection to use the new modem.

- Click Windows "Start", "Programs", "Accesories", "Communications", "Network and Dial-up Connections".
- Right-click on the Dial-up icon for your internet connection, then click "Properties".
- Place a checkmark in the box "All devices call the same numbers"
- In the "Connect Using:" field, place a checkmark in the box "Modem- U.S. Robotics 56K Message V.92".
- Remove the checkmark in the box "Modem- 56K Message Modem External European PnP".
- Click "OK" to save your changes.

Windows NT Users
****************

Note: Log in with administrator rights to remove the modem.

- Click Windows "Start", "Settings", and "Control Panel".
- Double-click the "Modems" icon.
- Select "U.S. Robotics 56K Message(non-PnP)" and click "Remove".
- Click "Yes".
- Click "Add".
- Click "Next".
- Click "Change"
- Click "Have Disk". 
- Click "Browse".

     (If a "Locate File" warning appears, click "Cancel".)

- Browse to "C:\Program Files\U.S. Robotics\ControlCenter\U.S. Robotics 56K Message Modem" and click "Open".
- Click "OK".
- Select "U.S. Robotics 56K Message V.92 (Non-PnP)" and click "OK".
- Click "Next".
	(If a "Modem Setup" screen appears, click "OK".)
- Click "Finish" to complete the installation procedure.

Note: Dial-up Networking will need to configured for the updated modem.

- Click "Close" to exit the "Modem Properties" screen.
- A "Modem Setup" screen will appear prompting you to configure Dial-up Networking.
- Click "Yes".
- In the "Remote Access Setup" screen, select the entry that contains "U.S. Robotics 56K Message".
- Click "Remove" and click "Yes".
- Click "Add".
- Select the entry that contains "U.S. Robotics 56K Message V.92" and click "OK".
- Verify the "Configure" and "Network" settings are correct, then Click "Continue".
- Click "Yes" to restart your computer.

Windows 98 Users

- Right-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and click "Properties".
- Click the Device Manager tab and double-click the "Modem" icon.
- Double-click "U.S. Robotics 56K Message" and select the Driver tab.
- Click "Update Driver".
- Click "Next".
- Click "Next".
- Select "Specify a location" and click "Browse".
- Browse to "C:\Program Files\U.S. Robotics\ControlCenter\U.S. Robotics 56K Message Modem" and click "OK".
- Click "Next".
- Click "Next".
- Click "Finish" to complete the update procedure.

Note: You must now modify your dial up connection to use the new modem.

- Click Windows "Start", "Programs", "Accesories", "Communications", "Dial-Up Networking".
- Right-click on the Dial-up icon for your internet connection, then click "Properties".
	(If a "Dial-Up Networking" message appears, click "OK".)
- In the "Connect Using:" field, select "U.S. Robotics 56K Message V.92".
- Click "OK" to save your changes.

Windows 95B (OSR2) Users

- Right-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and click "Properties".
- Click the Device Manager tab and double-click the "Modem" icon.
- Double-click "U.S. Robotics 56K Message" and select the "Driver" tab.
- Click "Update Driver".
- Click "Next".
- Click "Other Locations" and click "Browse".
- Browse to "C:\Program Files\U.S. Robotics\ControlCenter\U.S. Robotics 56K Message Modem" and
click "OK".
- Click "OK".
- Click "Finish" to complete the update procedure.

Section 3:

**  Internet Call Notification (ICN) update   **
************************************************

Use the Instant Update feature of ControlCenter to determine if you
have the latest version installed. If there is an update available, follow
the directions provided.

If ICN is not installed on your computer, follow the steps below to download ICN.

- Go to http://www.usr-emea.com/support/s-v92-icn.asp?loc=unkg and download the ICN
installation file to a temporary location on your hard drive. 
- In Windows Explorer, double-click the "ICNsetup" icon. 
The installation will start. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
