Linux Support
=============

3Com Corporation is pleased to provide the following Red Hat Package Manager
(.rpm) support file for the following modem models: 2976, 2977, and 3298.
This RPM package has been tested under Red Hat Linux 6.0 and higher. It
should also work with other Linux distributions supporting the RPM utility.

To install and configure your modem under Linux:

  1. Turn off your computer and unplug it from the electical outlet.
  2. Remove the cover from the computer.
  3. Remove the expansion slot cover for an available PCI slot. Save the
     screw for the next step.
  4. Insert the modem into the PCI slot. Secure the modem by reapplying the
     screw removed in step 3.
  5. Plug your phone cable into the modem's line jack.
  6. Replace the cover and plug in the system.
  7. Start the computer and login as root.
  8. From the command line (or terminal session if you've already started
Xserver), change to the directory containing the RPM package.
  9. Install the RPM file by typing the command

        rpm -i 3ComMdm-1.0-1.i386.rpm

The rpm program will respond by listing all available serial devices,
     including the newly configured modem.

To uninstall the modem:

  1. Start the computer and login as root.
  2. From the command line (or terminal session if you've already started
     Xserver) type the command

        rpm -e 3ComMdm

Please note that this RPM file is provided as a convenience to the Linux
community; however, 3Com does not provide Linux-related technical support
for these or any other desktop analog modems.
