So you need to take a break from whatever you were doing, brew a fresh coffee pot, fill up your XL mug [but don't spill it on your keyboard ;)], kick back, relax, and only after that, dig in, 1 tip at a time. All these steps must be performed in this exact order for maximum comfort. :-) Microsoft declared Windows 95 and 98 (ALL flavors) "obsolete" [:(]: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle.mspx But I didn't! :) And here is the proof... The main goal of these files is to transform your PC into the ultimate, extremely tweaked, mean machine you have always dreamed of, even if you don't have the fastest hardware available under the sun. Nonetheless, if you do own a fast rig, this will squeeze the last atom of performance it is capable of, making it soar at MAX Speeed. MOTTO: "Do U Feeel The Neeed 4 Speeed?" PS: As you can see, in my book "Speeed" ALWAYS (mis)spells with 3 "e"-s! ;) And now the fun begins... W95-11D is my new/updated/revised/improved FREEware [SOLELY for PROFIT-FREE use = *READ* MUSTREAD.TXT for details!] collection release 11d, containing tons of Valuable, Original, UNique, UNconventional, UNofficial, UNdocumented, UNcommon, UNknown, UNdiscovered, UNheard of + Hidden PC, Laptop, Modems, AOL, MS Internet Explorer + Netscape/Mozilla MS Windows 2003, XP, 2000, Millennium Edition (ME), NT 4.0, 98/98 SE, 95B/95C OSR 2.0 - 2.5, 95a OSR1, 95 retail and MS-DOS 8.00 + 7.xx ©TRICKs, SECRETs, TWEAKs, TIPs, HINTs, FIXes, HACKs, GUIDEs, SPEED-UPs, TUNE-UPs, WORKarounds, CONFIGs, SETUPs, NEWs, INFO, SPECs, References, UPGRADEs, PATCHes, Easter EGGs + LINKs, LOGOs, ICOns + BitMaPs, REGistry + BATch files, all dedicated to SPEED-UP + MAXIMIZE your computing performance & to help you find possible SOLUTIONS to your "Wintel" problems [compiled into 1 of the most extensive and comprehensive Operating Systems + PC Hardware tips databases on the Net]: http://members.aol.com/axcel216/95.htm The references in W95-11D apply to ALL these Microsoft Operating Systems (OSes) final/Gold/RTM retail/OEM releases (NOT beta), English versions ONLY: - Windows 2003 Server, - Windows eXPerience (XP) Home, Professional + XP SP1 [XP upgraded with SP1], - Windows Millennium Edition (ME), - Windows 2000 Professional + Server, 2000 SP1 [2000 upgraded with SP1], 2000 SP2 [2000 upgraded with SP2] + 2000 SP3 [2000 upgraded with SP3], - Windows NT 4.0 Workstation + Server SP6a [NT4 upgraded with SP6a], - Windows 98 [retail], 98 SP1 [98 retail upgraded with SP1] + 98 SE(U) [Second Edition (Updates)], - Windows 95 [retail], 95a OSR1 [95 retail upgraded with SP1], 95B OSR 2.0, 95B OSR 2.1 [OSR 2.0 upgraded with USBSUP] + 95C OSR 2.5, - MS-DOS 8.00 [WinME retail], - MS-DOS 7.10 [Win95B OSR 2.0, Win95B OSR 2.1, Win95C OSR 2.5, Win98 retail, Win98 SP1 + Win98 SE(U)] and - MS-DOS 7.00 [Win95 retail + Win95a OSR1], unless specified otherwise. See VERSION.TXT (included) to determine EXACTLY your Windows 95/98/ME OS version/build! These plain text files are growing larger as I keep adding new ©tips. Therefore some will NOT open with Notepad (Windows default text/ASCII editor/viewer), limited to a maximum file size of ONLY 64 KB. Bummer! :( Alternatively you could use WordPad.exe (in full screen view), but I STRONGLY RECOMMEND Programmer's File Editor 32-bit for Windows 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP/2003, the BEST + fastest FREEware Notepad replacement: opens ANY number of ASCII/text/HTML files of ANY size limited ONLY by your computer's memory, OLE2/DDE/MDI compliant, highly customizable: http://www.geocities.com/thestarman3/tool/pfe/PFE32.htm Get PFE32.EXE [608 KB]: http://downloads.planetmirror.com/pub/simtelnet/win95/editor/pfe101i.zip HINT: BACKUP your original NOTEPAD.EXE, rename PFE32.EXE to NOTEPAD.EXE, and then move the new NOTEPAD.EXE and PFE.HLP files to your Windows folder, to have ALL your text files open with the NEW Notepad. MAXIMIZE your Windows text viewer window to FULL screen (or at least 640x480) to avoid using "Word wrap", which splits long command lines, Internet addresses (URLs) and Windows Registry keys. All these text (.TXT) files are formatted to fit the 640x480 (VGA) screen of 79 characters, also used by EDIT.COM, the default MS-DOS text/ASCII text editor/viewer. I recommend EDIT.COM for displaying ONLY my AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, because the extended ANSI characters I use on my "SET PROMPT=" and "SET WINPMT=" lines are NOT supported by Notepad or ANY other Windows plain text/ASCII editor/viewer, unless you are using a Notepad replacement that supports ANSI/DOS/OEM fixed pitch fonts. W95-11D does NOT include ANY binary EXEcutables or embedded DOCument objects, ONLY plain text (.BAT, .DOS, .INF, .INI, .REG, .TXT, .SYS), graphics (.BMP, .ICO, .SYS) and icon library (.DLL) files. Therefore it does NOT contain ANY viruses, worms or trojans! Nonetheless, I scan my files frequently for all known viruses with the current release of Norton AntiVirus 32-bit for Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 [retail]: http://www.symantec.com/nav/ using newest virus signatures: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.html All my ZIP archives (.ZIP) are created by "shrinking" my files with 7-Zip 32-bit Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 DOS box command line tool [free GPL]: http://www.7-zip.org/ to achieve MAXimum possible ZIP compression ratio, otherwise attainable only by ACE/CAB/RAR formats. Some of my Original/Unique ©Tricks + Secrets canNOT be found ANYWHERE ELSE [or if you do, they were reproduced from my pages or files, and in certain cases without my consent!], and some are posted here and at my web site with EXCLUSIVE permission from their authors! A MUST for ALL Windows/WfWG 3.1x + DOS 6.xx users: get my dedicated ©Tricks + Secrets archive [W31-11D.ZIP, FREEware]: http://members.aol.com/axcel216/31.htm INSTALL + UNINSTALL My ©Tricks + Secrets files are available in 2 editions (pick one): 1. W95-11D.EXE [1.36 MB, self extracting INSTALL/UNINSTALL executable]: http://members.aol.com/axcel216/winfiles/W95-11D.EXE created with Inno Setup Installer 32-bit for Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 [freeware]: http://www.jrsoftware.org/isinfo.php 2. W95-11D.ZIP [1.2 MB, compressed archive in ZIP format]: http://members.aol.com/axcel216/winfiles/W95-11D.ZIP created with 7-Zip 32-bit for Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 DOS box command line tool [free GPL]: http://www.7-zip.org/ W95-11D.ZIP does NOT include INSTALL/UNINSTALL facilities. Therefore you need to extract all files using an unZIPping tool: see "WINDOWS 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP FILE SHRINKERS" in SOFTWARE.TXT (included) for freeware examples. To uninstall these files, please delete them all manually. Both W95-11D.EXE + W95-11D.ZIP contain the same 123 files, which need about 4 MB of free disk space after installation/extraction. You can tell NEWER updates because these files ALWAYS show the DATE they were released. ... And rest assured, you did NOT miss a thing... they're ALL here! ;-) If you happen to have ANY OLDER versions of my ©Tricks + Secrets files, please DELETE/UNINSTALL them ALL FIRST as detailed below, and then download THIS NEW/CURRENT W95-11D.EXE or W95-11D.ZIP release into an EMPTY folder/directory. * INSTALL W95-11D.EXE: Run W95-11D.EXE ONLY from within Windows 9x/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 GUI to install all 123 files, categorized as follows: 1. Main Folder [default is C:\Program Files\AXCEL216 = can be changed at will during INSTALL to any other available destination]: 48 Text files [.TXT] + AXCEL216.URL [link to my web site = opens in your default web browser]. 2. 7 Subfolders: - REGFILES: 37 Windows Registry files [.REG]. - BATFILES: 16 DOS style Batch files [.BAT]. - INFFILES: 3 Windows Information files [.INF] + IEBUGFIX.BAT. - SYSFILES: Windows 9x/ME AUTOEXEC.BAT, 2 MS-DOS 6.xx Boot files [.DOS] + 3 Windows 9x/ME System Boot files [.SYS]. - ICOFILES: MYICONS.DLL Icons Library + 5 Icons [.ICO]. - MISCFILE: 2 Windows Bitmaps [.BMP], MS DosShell DOSSHELL.INI + 2 ANSI Text files [.TXT]. - UNINST [used by UNINSTALL]: UNINS000.DAT + UNINS000.EXE. You *MUST READ* "COMPLETE FILES LIST" further below to learn how to properly use all these files! NOTES: 1. W95-11D.EXE also creates the C:\Program Files\Start Menu\AXCEL216 folder [optional = can be changed at will or completely disabled], accessed after INSTALL from Start button -> Programs -> AXCEL216, and which contains these 4 shortcuts: - MUST READ THIS FIRST! = runs MUSTREAD.TXT. - AXCEL216's ©Tricks + Secrets Guide = runs READ1ST.TXT. - AXCEL216's MAX Speeed Web Site = runs AXCEL216.URL. - Uninstall AXCEL216's ©Tricks + Secrets = runs \UNINST\UNINS000.EXE. 2. The ONLY change W95-11D.EXE makes to your files is this Registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\AXCEL216 3. ALL folders, files + Registry entry above created by W95-11D.EXE during INSTALL are completely DELETED by UNINSTALL. * UNINSTALL W95-11D.EXE: - Click the Start button -> Programs -> AXCEL216 -> (double)-click "Uninstall AXCEL216's ©Tricks + Secrets", or: - Open Control Panel -> (double)-click Add/Remove Programs -> select "AXCEL216's MAX Speeed WinDOwS ©Tricks + Secrets" -> click the Add/Remove button. Windows looks for CRUCIAL System/Hardware/Software/User settings in these files upon GUI startup: - SYSTEM.DAT - USER.DAT - CLASSES.DAT [x] - SYSTEM.DA0 [*] - USER.DA0 [*] The Registry files are updated using current System/Hardware/Software/User settings every time Windows 9x/ME starts. [x] = This file is specific ONLY to Windows ME. [*] = These files are the default Registry backups, specific ONLY to Windows 95 (retail), 95a OSR1 (upgraded with SP1), 95B OSR 2.0, 95B OSR 2.1 (upgraded with USBSUP) + 95C OSR 2.5. Windows 98, 98 SP1, 98 SE(U) + ME use a different Registry backup system: automatically create a new backup set upon the first boot of each day. This includes (default): CLASSES.DAT (WinME only), SYSTEM.DAT, USER.DAT, WIN.INI + SYSTEM.INI.
