T358.MPD version 4.01.06 11/13/96

Adaptec APA-358 MiniSCSI EPP Windows 95 driver update

What's new in this version:
-LUN support added
-Bug that caused Compaq computers with VLSI chipsets to 'hang' is fixed. The
original code would try to read EPP registers at 3BC, which is invalid, and
would cause Compaq system to 'hang'.
-Improved throughput with most systems
-Added additional support for SMC chipsets in EPP mode
-Fixed command line option parsing. Now supports mode selections and IRQ's.
  /m2 forces uni-directional
  /m4 forces bi-directional
  /m8 forces EPP register mode
/Ix allows IRQ to be specified
-Typically, enabling an IRQ can result in about 10% performance improvement.
All command line options are enabled in the "Settings" page of Device Manager.
-Support for all traditional parallel ports is now included. This includes I/O
ports 3BC (IBM uses this as the default LPT1 port), as well as the more
  common ports 378 and 278.

Known limitations:
-Many systems require some manual configuration for optimal and correct
operation. Knowledge of your system's setup program, and it's parallel port
modes of operation may be helpful. Knowledge of the use of Windows 95's
  'Device Manager' is also helpful.
-In some configurations the MiniSCSI may appear to have installed correctly,
but will fail under use. In this case, you will need to force the driver
to a slower speed using the above listed command line options.
-This driver does NOT support ECP... only EPP and earlier. The computer's
parallel port chipset must be configured for EPP mode for best throughput. If
the computer is set for ECP mode, the fastest throughput will be obtained by
forcing the T358.MPD driver to unidirectional mode with the /M2 command line
option in the Settings Page. Most Compaq laptops have ECP only ports and will
only support uni-directional speed. Exception: Toshiba Tecras (and possibly
other Toshiba systems) MUST be set to ECP to work in uni-directional mode. If
the parallel port is set to bi-directional mode, the MiniSCSI will install.

-Setting the computer to EPP mode will allow the driver to obtain full EPP
speeds automatically (or by using the /M8 switch) on computers that have
working EPP implementations. The driver does not currently work in EPP
mode with most newer IBM Thinkpads (760 series).

-Many Intel motherboards use the National PC87306 super i/o chipset, but are
UNABLE to work in EPP mode... their EPP mode actually defaults to 4 bit
unidirectional mode. In that case, setting the CMOS to bi-directional and adding
the appropriate command line options will give the optimum speed. The National
ECP port will only support unidirectional speeds if configured for ECP in CMOS.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
