 DMI-compliant components
 DMI Service Provider
 DMI-compliant management application.

DMI-compliant components
------------------------

Most Intel EtherExpress(TM) PCI adapters are DMI-compliant. However,
once you install your adapter, you still need to install your
adapter's DMI support driver.

DMI Service Provider
--------------------

The DMI Service Provider can be part of your operating system or an
add-on. Service Providers are sometimes bundled with management
applications.

DMI-compliant management applications
-------------------------------------

Management applications are available from a variety of vendors. An
example of a DMI-compliant management application would be Version
3.1 of Intel's LANDesk(R) Client Manager (LDCM).

II. DMI Driver Installation Preparation
=======================================

The installation program will not proceed if the DMI Service
Provider is not running. Make sure a DMI 2.0 management application
such as the Intel LANDesk Client Manager is installed.
The Intel DMI Network Adapter Instrumentation Layer replaces earlier
DMI models (v1.0). The new IL (2.0) is not supported by earlier
versions of DMI.

III. DMI Driver Installation and Removal Steps
==============================================

Installation for Windows 95 and NT 4.0

1. Make sure that the Intel PCI Network Adapter and its appropriate
NDIS driver (NDIS 3 and 4 are currently supported)are loaded before
   installing the instrumentation.

2. Run SETUP.EXE.

3. At the first install screen select the language in which you
would like to run this setup program. Currently the only available
   option is English.

4. Click Next to install the software. A folder named "IntelIL" will
be created in your Windows directory. DO NOT DELETE THIS DIRECTORY.

5. The next screen confirms that the installation was successful.

You have two options:

-Restart the system for changes to take effect.
-Don't Restart and let changes to take effect at reboot.

6. In Windows 95 only, the following dialog box may appear after
   restarting the computer:

"Warning: Unable to find the DMI Service Provider. Select 'Yes' to
    continue trying, 'No' to exit."

The IL is waiting for the Service Provider to finish loading. This
message is normal.

7. Select 'Yes' to continue loading. The IL will then find the
Service Provider when it finishes loading.

Uninstall for Windows 95 and NT 4.0

1. From the Windows Start Menu select Settings, Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs applet.

3. At the Install/Uninstall tab select Intel DMI Network Adapter
   Instrumentation 2.0.

4. Click the Add/Remove button.

5. A dialog box appears confirming your decision to delete all
components of the application. Choose 'Yes' to proceed.

6. An uninstall dialog box should confirm that the uninstall is
   complete.

7. Reboot your computer to ensure that all uninstall files were
   deleted.

Known Problems
--------------
- Since the network adapter driver and the DMI support driver are
installed separately a situation can arise where the adapter is no
longer installed but the DMI support for the adapter is. This
happens if the adapter is disabled through Windows Device Manager
dialog or if the adapter card is removed without removing the
adapter from the Windows Network Settings dialog and, the DMI
support is not removed. In this case, most management applications
will show the adapter since it is still registered in the DMI
database, but most information queries on the adapter will likely
result in errors.

- The preferred way of removing an adapter from your system is to remove
it using the Windows Network Settings dialog and then remove the DMI
information for that adapter. Most management applications will provide
an option for performing the latter. Whether the DMI information for
the adapter is removed or not, you should restart your computer after
removing or disabling the network adapter.

- For systems with multiple network adapters, the DMI component
verification attribute (i.e. Verify) only returns verification for
one of the adapters. This is a limitation of DMI itself. To
determine whether instrumentation for each adapter is operating
properly you can query other runtime attributes for each adapter via
the management application.

V. DMI Background
=================

The Desktop Management Interface (DMI) is a computer industry
standard for managing computer components, such as your Intel PCI
Network Adapter.

Any system component - your hard disk, operating system, software
application, or adapter - designed to be DMI-compliant can
dynamically communicate with management applications via the DMI.

	| DMI-compliant |<===>{ DMI }<===>|   DMI-compliant   |
	| Component | {`````} | Mgmt. Application |

In effect, the DMI is the middleman between DMI-compliant components
and DMI-compliant management applications.

How DMI works
-------------
At a fundamental level, DMI performs two functions: it stores
information about components, and it provides the ability to query
and change that information. Information about how a desktop
component can be managed is stored in a Management Information
Format (MIF) file. Each DMI-compliant component has its own MIF
file that includes information such as location of the component,
vendor name, and installation date. When you install DMI support for
a DMI-compliant component, an entry is made into the MIF database by
the Service Provider.
