NETjet-S PCI ISDN Modem

Support Note 20 Dec 2002

Congratulations on choosing the NETjet-S ISDN modem for Windows, Linux and FreeBSD.

General installation instructions are found in the manuals for each operating system on the enclosed CD.

If you are upgrading from a previous NETjet driver, please refer to the readme file under the relevant operating system directory.

If you wish to use Data-Over-Voice (DOV), please read the following instructions VERY CAREFULLY!

IMPORTANT : How can I ensure that DOV is working?

DOV allows users to avoid the time-charged rates associated with ISDN data calls, and to therefore greatly reduce their running costs. You must, however, ensure that DOV is set up correctly!

To give yourself peace-of-mind when first using DOV , there are a number of things that we strongly advise you to check to ensure that you avoid any unexpected time-charged phone bills .....

(a) Don't forget to prepend the dialled number with a 'V' (upper or lower case).

(b) In Windows, under the Dialup Networking icon, make sure you DO NOT have the box ticked for "Use area code and Dialing Properties" as this will insert an area code in front of the "V" and your call will not be a DOV call !

eg. under W98 : My Computer / Dial-Up Networking / right-click on your NETjet icon and select Properties, then check the "user area code and Dialing Properties" tick box.

(c) Always check the CALL TYPE after installing new drivers or any patches - this applies to all operating systems! If using Windows a good way to do this is to call a Telstra number (eg. your home phone number or mobile number) and make sure that it rings. Try again without the V - if it DOES NOT ring then this will confirm you are using a timed data call and you can put the V back with confidence. Note that Optus numbers will always ring for both DOV and ISDN data calls, so the test is not reliable in this case : use one of the other methods above.

(d) We recommend that you use an ISP that has a DOV ONLY access number. That way if you are misconfigured for Data calls, you can't connect to your ISP. Also check that your ISP has his Access Server configured correctly - place a Data call to the DOV number and make sure it is rejected.

(e) Subscribe to online billing from Telstra - it's free and you can check yesterday's phone bill. Try http://www.telstra.com.au/billing/

DOV will not work over long-haul routes where compression is used, or where echo-cancellers are used. If DOV does not work in your area (very unlikely) then Traverse offers a money-back guarantee.
