This readme documents the steps necessary to install WinRT onto a
Windows XP, 2000, 98 or ME Plug and Play WDM machine.

The combination of an .INF and .SYS file make up what is called a "Setup
Disk" by the device installation wizards in Windows. You will want to
"Browse" for the directory where both of these files reside.

Installing WDM PCI Devices (or other plug and play devices)

If your device is not in the system, reboot the machine and plug it in. If
after you plug your device in, you are prompted for a setup disk, direct the
setup wizard to your setup disk or setup folder containing the files the
console generated. After the wizard finds your disk and installs, you are done
and the driver is installed and running. The console will reflect a running
device (hit F5 to refresh the view).

If you are not prompted with a wizard when you plug in your device, from the
Start menu, select "Run" then type "control". This will bring up the
control panel. Double-click the system icon. On Windows 2000 now click the
Hardware tab then device manager, for Windows 98 or ME just click on device manager
(F4 from the console).

Find your device and double-click on it. Since you did not get the install
wizard initially then a driver has probably been installed for your device so
look for a class of devices that matches your device. Once you have found your
device and double-clicked on it, tab over to the Driver panel and select
"Update Driver."

It may be a good idea to first uninstall your device from the control panel
and select refresh. This will cause you to get a new wizard for your PCI
device, then you can just browse for the INF file.

Clicking "Update Driver" runs a wizard that will prompt you for a disk to
install your driver. Use the "Search for better driver than the one you are
using now then click on "Specify a location." Browse for your setup disk,
and select your INF file for installation.

If you have problems getting the device to load using your new INF, see the
section below on Phantom INFs.

Installing WDM ISA Devices (or non-plug and play devices)

From the "System" or Control panel, select add new hardware wizard, or "Add
remove hardware". Select "Add / Troubleshoot a device," then Next. The
system will now search for devices. It will not find your device since your
device is not plug and play. Once the search is complete, select "Add a new
device" then hit Next. Select "No, I want to select the hardware from a
list" and Next. Click on "Other devices" then Next. Click on "Have disk"
then browse for the folder where the INF and driver reside. Your ISA device
should now show up in the device list, Click on your device then hit Next, and
continue hitting Next until the installation is complete.

If your ISA device is installed and you want to reinstall it, you can either
uninstall it, then reinstall according to the previous paragraph. Or you can
use the "Update Driver" function in the device properties from the device
manager.

If you have problems getting the device to load using your new INF, see the
section below on Phantom INFs.

Phantom INFs

If after the wizard reads your setup disk or folder the device wizard shows a
different .INF than what you expect (such as oem1.inf), you will have to
delete the phantom INF it shows you as the INF name before it will install the
WinRT driver. You may want to make a copy of the INF before deleting it so
that you can copy it back to the location that Windows found it afterward.
It's a good idea to back up INFs because they are used by the plug and play
manager and often contain more than one device in them (especially for USB
devices).

IMPORTANT: If there is a .PNF file with the same name as the .INF that you are
deleting, you will also need to delete the .PNF. The .PNF is just a compiled
version of the .INF. Windows has a tendency to assume that if there is a
driver running, it is the correct driver. You may find this is a bad
assumption in some cases, the reason that the deletion is required.

Continue the deletion process until Windows shows the INF for your device and
it will install the WinRT driver. You may also be given to option to "Install
one of the other devices." You can try this too, but again, you may select
your device and it will pop up a different INF; check the description for the
INF it displays. The most reliable method is to keep accepting Windows'
choice, delete the INF, hit the back button and try again until it shows your
INF.
