How to make Basilisk II run faster
----------------------------------

First the obvious: if at all possible, consider upgrading your hardware
if you can afford it. Basilisk II Windows port is optimized for PII and PIII
class machines.

There are two versions of Basilisk II in the distribution archive.
The one named BasiliskIINT.exe runs only on NT4 and Win2k, and is
considerably faster than the old BasiliskII.exe, which is distributed
only for those who have not yet upgraded to NT based technology.
Under NT4/Win2k, you are supposed to delete BasiliskII.exe and rename
BasiliskIINT.exe to be BasiliskII.exe.

L2 cache latency timing is very important (but I don't want to emphasize
it too much since most people cannot do anything about it).
Do not overclock if you need to add extra latency cycles. In contrary,
you may actually get better performance by slightly underclocking,
if that allows you to reduce latency (not all BIOSes allow you to
change these values anyway).

You can disable L2 caching of the lowest 64kB of Mac memory in "Misc" page
of the GUI. This seems to speed up MacOS 8.x.

There are some palette problems in the code. Sometimes palette animation
seems very slow (windowed screen modes). You can work around this by making
sure that there are no other applications running at the same time.
Task switching out of Basilisk II and back again sometimes helps too.

It's generally a very good idea to make sure that there are no other Windows
applications running in the background anyway. Even innocently looking
programs, seemingly just sitting idle, can have a big impact on speed
of Basilisk II. Do not underestimate this tip -- background tasks may
severely hurt L2 efficiency.

The same goes for NT services. Basilisk II may be much slower to run 
under NT Server (as opposed to NT Workstation), because a lot more
services are running on the background.

If you benchmark the Windows port of Basilisk II, please note that
the results given by applications like SpeedoMeter are not reliable
if the accurate 60 Hz timer is disabled.

Full screen modes are [usually] faster than windowed modes.
Some full screen modes (different screen width) are faster than the others,
depending on your video adapter.

Reducing the color depth improves the speed dramatically.
Note that the windowed DirectX mode always uses your Windows color depth,
no matter what you enter in the GUI.

Reducing the screen dimensions helps too.

Reducing the audio settings in MacOS control panel may speed things
up on low-end computers.

Disabling ethernet speeds up low-end computers. It has less impact
on faster machines (PII or better).

Booting with extensions disabled (hold the shift key down when you see the happy Mac)
can make a big difference in speed and responsiveness. Since you cannot boot without
extensions all the time, you should consider disabling all unnecessary control
panels and extensions instead. This is even more important under Mac emulation than
when using a real Mac.

The "Debug" page of the GUI allows you to disable the accurate 60 Hz timer.
On low end computers, this can speed things up.

There is also an "undocumented" setting that you can define in the file
"BasiliskII.ini" in your Windows folder:

  [Debug]
  disable_internal_wait=1

This will boost especially net browsing, but some applications may not work
(although everything seems to work for me).

Experiment with the "Milliseconds between frames" option in the GUI screen tab.
Increasing the value slightly may give better performance. Increasing it
too much will cause jerky mouse and screen updates. The screen refresh frame
rate is calculated as follows:
  FPS = 1000 / ("Milliseconds between frames" + "constant")
where "constant" depends on your hardware, typically a few milliseconds.

Some applications run considerably faster when the FPU is enabled.

Customize the thread priorities in the GUI. They are important. I cannot provide
a priority setup that is optimal for all hardware configurations, so you are
on your own here. The basic rule is: the CPU priority should not be higher than
most of the other values. CPU is the only thread that is running all the time,
and it should have all the time that is left over from the rest of the threads.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
