SAVING THE MICROSOFT-SUPPLIED DRIVER:

Before installing the S3 Generic Windows NT 3.5 driver from S3, save the
Microsoft-supplied S3 video driver files (c:\winnt35\system32\drivers\s3.sys
and c:\winnt35\system32\s3.dll, assuming Windows NT 3.5 is installed
in c:\winnt35) to a floppy.



INSTALLING THE S3 GENERIC DRIVER FOR WINDOWS NT 3.5

Now install the S3 Generic Windows NT 3.5 driver.  There is no oemsetup.inf 
file as in Windows or in Windows NT 3.1.

1.  If you are not running Windows NT in VGA mode, reboot your system and do
    so.
2.  Insert Genoa's Utility Programs Disk #2 into floppy drive a:, use File
    Manager to:
	Copy a:\winnt35\s3.sys to c:\winnt35\system32\drivers and
	copy a:\winnt35\s3.dll to c:\winnt35\system32,
	assuming your NT is installed in c:\winnt35.
3.  Click on the Control Panel icon, and then click on the Display icon.
4.  Select Change Display type.
5.  In Display Type window, select Change Adapter type.
    In Select Device, scroll down to select model "S3 Compatible Graphics
    Adapter."
6.  Click on Install.
7.  Select Yes.
8.  When asked if you want to use Current or New driver, click on Current.
9.  Select Continue. 
    Click on OK when the message, "The drivers were successfully installed.",
    is given.
    Click on OK to exit.  
10. Click on "Restart Now" button to restart Windows NT 3.5 with the new
    driver.
11. When rebooting select the Windows NT boot option, not the VGA mode option.



CHANGE RESOLUTION, COLOR DEPTH AND REFRESH RATE

1.  Click on the Control Panel icon, and then click on the Display icon.
    Click on Change display type and observe adapter selection screen to verify 
    the S3 driver is active. 
    Click on cancel to return to Display Settings window. 
2.  Select List all modes, and select the resolution (Desktop Area), Color 
    Palette and refresh rate (Refresh Frequency) you want.
3.  Click on TEST button, then click OK.
    Observe test pattern to verify color and flicker etc. are acceptable.
    Test pattern will disappear in a few seconds.
4.  If test pattern was not acceptable, click NO and repeat steps 13 and 14.
5.  Once test pattern is acceptable, click on YES and click on Restart 
    to restart NT.
 
Repeat the above process as needed.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
