1) How to Install Appian Duet Drivers and HydraVision
================================================================
Appian Duet drivers and HydraVision software run under Windows 95 and Windows NT
4.0. To install HydraVision, please make a copy of your driver disk and perform the
following steps.

(a) If you downloaded the driver from the internet, create a Duet installation disk by
unzipping the downloaded file to a floppy.

(b) Insert the Duet installation disk into your floppy drive.

(c) Follow the HydraVision installation instructions in the Appian Duet User's Guide
using your install disk.

2) How to Contact Appian
================================================================
For information on how to contact Appian Graphics technical support, refer to the
"Appian Duet User's Guide" that shipped with your Duet board. You can also contact
Appian's technical support via the World Wide Web at www.appiangraphics.com.

3) Multiple Monitor DirectDraw Support
================================================================
Duet supports the following DirectDraw operations:

(a) Exclusive Mode (DirectDraw takes over the entire screen). Duet supports this mode
with no errors.

(b) Windowed Mode (DirectDraw plays back in a window). Duet supports this mode as
long as the DirectDraw window is fully contained on one screen. If the DirectDraw
window is moved onto a monitor split, Duet will not process DirectDraw commands until
the window is moved to a single screen. When running Active Movie, this will result in a
paused video screen. Note that some DirectDraw applications running in this mode may
cause errors when their window is dragged to another screen. Also note that when an
active DirectX window is split between two monitors, your mouse response will become
sluggish and some screen degradation may appear.

4) How to Uninstall Appian Duet Drivers and HydraVision
================================================================
To uninstall the HydraVision drivers under Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, use the
Windows Add/Remove Programs control panel utility.

5) HydraVision Desktop Manager Tips and Notes
================================================================
The desktop manager follows a few rules of operation.

(a) Certain applications use windows instead of dialog boxes to communicate with the
user (an example is MicroStation 95 which uses windows for file open, save, etc.). In this
case the desktop manager we will not relocate the window since only dialog boxes are
relocated.

(b) Single Monitor Windows is a very complex control which essentially attempts to
thwart an application's control over it's own window. Some applications will not allow
this control initially and will start across a monitor split. Clicking on the application's title
bar will cause it to be relocated to a single monitor.

(c) In some cases, desktop management of certain application windows or dialog boxes
causes problems. If the application expects to see its dialog box or window on a particular
area of the screen and the window is not there, errors can occur ranging from mild to
severe. Appian intentionally does not control certain dialog boxes known to have this
problem. If, however, you experience a problem running an application when
HydraVision is loaded (the desktop manager), please try unloading HydraVision and
running the application again. If the cause of the problem was HydraVision, please let
Appian know (contact information is below).

(d) Some applications use child windows for dialog boxes. These child windows are not
relocated by the desktop manager because (1) they are bound inside their parent window
and (2) HydraVision by definition does not relocate windows. Some applications which
do this (but not all) are:
Adobe Pagemaker 6 - Spell and Find dialogs
Corel Draw 6 - all dialogs under NT (W95 is fine)
Corel Quattro Pro - all dialogs
Word 7.0 - Spell dialog
Excel 5.0 - Help dialog (actually a window)
Microstation95 - all dialogs
Office97 - Paperclip help

The Appian Desktop Manager controls windows and dialog boxes by examining and
modifying system messages which create, move and destroy dialog boxes and windows.
There are hundreds of ways that programmers can create dialogs. With all of these
variables, the desktop manager is not perfect and can either miss or incorrectly move a
dialog box or a window. In either case, Appian would like to know about it so that we
can add the offending application to our test suite in order to correct the problem. If you
have a desktop manager problem, please e-mail the offending application's name to
support@appiangraphics.com.

6) HydraVision Control Panel Issues
================================================================
On the Appian Multi-Monitor tab page, a checkbox is available to enable individual
monitor refresh rates. When this option is selected, the refresh rate displayed on the
Windows Settings tab page may not be accurate. This is because Windows assumes it is
only addressing a single monitor and cannot account for two or more independent refresh
rate settings. Note that under Windows95, selection of individual refresh rates is always
enabled.

A similar problem can occur with reported desktop resolution. Anomalies between the
resolution reported by the Settings tab and the resolution reported by the HydraVision
Extended Display Settings tab can occur running in either single monitor mode or multi-
mon mode. This is because Windows assumes it is only addressing a single monitor at a
single resolution and cannot account for independent resolution settings.

If the control panel is open when a hot key is activated that changes desktop settings
(zoom and current settings), the control panel will not reflect the changes until it is closed
and re-opened.

When Dynamic Zoom is enabled on the Duet, the Appian maximize icon that normally
appears in the upper right corner of application windows is disabled and no longer
available. This occurs because HydraVision recognizes Dynamic Zoom as a single
monitor display mode. You can still maximize application windows to a single monitor in
Dynamic Zoom mode by double clicking on an application's title bar.

When a password protected screen saver is run under Windows, the HydraVision hot
keys, including the Enter Power Down Mode key command, lose their functionality. By
definition, a password protected screen saver will lock out all keyboard input until the
designated password is entered. HydraVision hot key actions, also by definition, are
initiated through keyboard input. Therefore Appian does not recommend using the Enter
Power Down Mode hot key in conjunction with a Windows password protected screen
saver.

If you select large fonts while running with a 640x480 display, the display control panel
will be clipped when it is opened. Please select small fonts on the Settings tab when
running 640x480 display resolutions if Windows has not automatically selected small
fonts for you.

When you are in 1280x1024 resolution, virtual screens are disabled. If you change
resolutions to other than 1280, your virtual screen settings will be re-enabled.

7) Appian MultiDesk and Per Application Desktop Management
================================================================
Appian's HydraVision desktop management software includes support for multiple
desktops under Windows 95 and Windows NT4.0. Up to nine virtual desktops can be
accessed and configured from the system tray by right clicking the MultiDesk icon.
Desktops can be enabled, named, and arranged according to user preferences and an
Appian hot key is available for accessing virtual desktops with a single keystroke.

HydraVision desktop management software also includes individual application settings
that allow you to override global desktop management settings on a per application basis.
Individual application settings can be accessed by right clicking on the Appian icon in the
upper right corner of an application window or can be accessed from Appian's Desktop
Management tab.

8) Duet with Video
================================================================
The Duet is available with optional video capture and video output support. For Duet
with Video models, please note one limitation when using Dynamic Zoom under
Windows 95:

(a) With Dynamic Zoom panning enabled, TV output will default to the center of the
display. Relocating the Dynamic Zoom window within the control panel has no effect.

9) Monitor Performance Issues
================================================================
When running multiple monitors side by side at different resolutions and refresh rates,
interference and synchronization problems can occur. This is manifested as transparent
scrolling horizontal lines moving from top to bottom on one monitor and from bottom to
top on a second monitor. This can be addressed in various ways:

(a) Set both monitors to the same refresh rate and resolution.

(b) Set both monitors to a lower refresh rate.

(c) Increase the space (ie distance) between monitors.

(d) Check monitor quality. High-end, low radiation monitors generally do not exhibit this
problem.

10) Remote Access Software (NetMeeting, pcAnywhere)
================================================================
When using some applications, it is important to adjust the resolution on the Windows
Settings tab to accurately reflect the size of the multiple monitor desktop. This will ensure
that applications such as Microsoft NetMeeting are fully functional and operate properly
in the multi-mon environment. For example, if the Settings tab is reporting a resolution of
800x600 with two monitors enabled, the sharing function in NetMeeting will not work.
However, changing the resolution on the Settings tab to report the actual size of the
desktop (in this case, 1600x600) enables proper operation of NetMeeting sharing.

Once NetMeeting has sharing enabled, you can disable monitors but you cannot enable
monitors without shutting off NetMeeting sharing. To shut off NetMeeting sharing, go to
your Windows NT control panel and select Devices. Find the mnmdd device and select
the StartUp button. Select the disable option and click OK. Reboot. NetMeeting sharing
will now be shut off and you can enable monitors at will. To turn sharing back on again,
use the NetMeeting menu selection.

Some applications which "hook" the display driver (such as pcAnywhere) can have
problems when used with multi-monitor display systems. pcAnywhere 8.0 has a
confirmed problem with Appian display cards, but a patch is available from Symantec
(www.symantec.com) for pcAnywhere v8.02.

11) Windows 95 Installation Notes
================================================================
When installing new hardware, Windows 95 automatically detects changes to the system
and offers to install or search for new hardware for you. This plug-n-play capability does
not always work. Windows 95 attempts to hide complexity by making assumptions in the
installation of new hardware. This can cause the installation failure of your display
board(s). The "safer" way to install is to prevent Windows 95 from making any
assumptions about your hardware. Appian recommends the following general procedure
for Windows 95 installation.

(a) If at any point in the installation Windows 95 asks you to start the Hardware Wizard
or to search for new Hardware, select Cancel.

(b) The first time that Windows 95 detects new hardware and asks you for a driver, select
"Have Disk..." and insert the Duet disk to install the driver.

(c) Any subsequent Windows 95 new hardware detections should be canceled (click the
Cancel button).

(d) After booting into Windows 95, bring up the Display Control Panel. If Windows 95
asks to start the Hardware Wizard, click Cancel.

(e) Once you are in the Display Control Panel, click the Settings tab to bring up the
settings page. Click the Change Display Type button.

(f) Verify that the Duet driver is listed under the Adapter Type box. If it is not, click the
Change button and follow the instructions to change your driver.

(g) At this point you may close the Display Control Panel and shutdown the machine (DO
NOT RESTART WHEN WINDOWS ASKS YOU). You have now installed the card and
driver correctly. Subsequent boots will use the Appian driver.
