(a) Unzip the downloaded zip file to a floppy disk using PKUNZIP (available on the www.pkware.com site). A typical PKUNZIP command will look like this - "PKUNZIP V200.ZIP A:\" where V200.ZIP is the name of the downloaded zip driver file and A: is your floppy drive. This floppy disk will be your new install disk. You can also use Winzip under Windows to unzip your files (available at www.winzip.com). (b) Follow the HydraVision installation instructions in your Jeronimo User's Guide using your new install disk. 2) How to contact Appian ================================================================ Appian Technical Support may be reached at 1-800-422-7369 Appian Sales may be reached at 1-800-727-7426 Appian on the internet is available at http://www.appiangraphics.com 3) DirectDraw Support - IMPORTANT! ================================================================ Appian has improved DirectDraw support in Win95 while running dual monitors. DirectDraw is also supported under NT 4.0. Specifically, Appian supports the following DirectDraw operations: - Exclusive Mode (where DirectDraw takes over the entire screen). Jeronimo supports this mode with no issues. - Windowed Mode (where DirectDraw plays back in a window). Jeronimo supports this mode as long as the DirectDraw window is fully contained on one screen. If the DirectDraw window is moved onto a monitor split, Jeronimo will not process DirectDraw commands until the window is moved to a single screen. When running Active Movie, this will result in a paused video screen. Note that some DirectDraw applications running in this mode may cause errors when their window is dragged to another screen. Also note that when an active DirectDraw window is dropped on the split, your mouse response will become sluggish and some screen degradation may appear. - Disabled Mode (where DirectDraw is disabled via the HydraVision control panel). In this case, all operations will work but DirectDraw will not be used. This will result in lower performance. Note that programs which force video to the center of the screen (and thus onto the split) such as WinBench96 Video Tests are NOT compatible with HydraVision DirectDraw when DirectDraw acceleration is turned on due to the limitations described above. DirectDraw, by its architecture, is incompatible with graphics devices that use more than one frame buffer (such as Appian does for dual monitor operation). DirectDraw assumes that the screen is fully contained in one frame buffer and will access the frame buffer directly, bypassing Appian's driver. When this occurs, the DirectDraw operation can fail. 4) How to UNINSTALL the HydraVision drivers ================================================================ To uninstall the HydraVision drivers under Win95/WinNT 4.0, use the Add/Remove programs control panel utility. To uninstall the HydraVision WinNT 3.51 drivers, remove the Appian HydraVision icon from your startup group. 5) Machine Compatibility ================================================================ Some machines do not actually power down when they restart after installing the HydraVision drivers. This can cause the driver to fail. It is recommended that you "Shut Down" the machine after installing the drivers and then press ctrl-alt-del to restart rather than use the restart option (reply NO to "Restart Computer?" message box). 6) WinNT 3.51 notes and bugs - IMPORTANT ================================================================ !! IMPORTANT!! When installing the NT driver, after rebooting NT will inform you that display settings have changed and will bring up the NT Display Control panel. Do not click Cancel! Click OK and use the HydraVision Control panel from then on to make display setting changes. If you do not do this, subsequent boots into NT will cause a Dr. Watson divide by 0 error! 7) WinNT 4.0 notes and bugs ================================================================ OpenGL is accelerated on the first, or defualt monitor only. Certain OpenGL modes incorrectly assume that bitmaps are cached on the graphics board if DirectDraw is enabled. This is a false assumption and can lead to drawing errors. If OpenGL programs appear to be drawing incorrectly, try disabling DirectDraw acceleration on the Multi-Monitor tab page. On the Appian Multi-Monitor tab page, a checkbox is avaialble to enable individual monitor refresh rates. When this option is selected, the refresh rate displayed on the Settings tab page may not be accurate. This is because Windows assumes it is only addressing a single monitor and cannot account for two or more independent refresh rate settings. 8) Win95 notes and bugs ================================================================ When DirectDraw is enabled, dragging a paused video window will leave the video window colors corrupted. Starting the video again will fix the problem. Please refer also to item (2) in this readme. While Appian supports DirectX 3.0, it is not included on this distribution disk. Please visit the Microsoft web site to download DirectX 3.0 files. Some games (and the Microsoft DirectX 3.0 installer) will attempt to overwrite and replace the Jeronimo driver files. If this occurs, please re-install the Jeronimo driver after installing the DirectX application. Always run the driver in full acceleration mode. The driver will not function correctly in any other mode. 9) HydraVision desktop manager tips and notes ================================================================ The desktop manager follows a few rules of operation. a) Certain applications use windows instead of dialog boxes to communicate with the user (an example is MicroStation 95 which uses windows for file open, save, etc.). In this case HydraVision will not relocate the window since only dialog boxes are relocated. b) Single Monitor Windows is a very complex control which basically attempts to thwart the application's control over its own window. Some applications will not allow this control initially and will start across a monitor split. Clicking on the application's title bar will cause it to be relocated on a single monitor. c) In some cases, desktop management of certain application windows or dialog boxes causes problems. If the application expects to see its dialog box or window on a particular area of the screen and the window is not there, errors can occur ranging from mild to severe. Appian purposely does not control certain dialog boxes known to have this problem. If, however, you experience a problem running an application when HydraVision is loaded (the desktop manager), please try unloading HydraVision and running the application again. If the cause of the problem was HydraVision, please let Appian know as soon as possible (contact information is below). d) Some applications use child windows for dialog boxes. These child windows are not relocated by the desktop manager because (1) they are bound inside their parent window and (2) HydraVision by definition does not relocate windows. Some applications which do this (but not all) are: Adobe Pagemaker 6 - Spell and Find dialogs Corel Draw 6 - all dialogs under NT (W95 is fine) Word 7.0 - Spell dialog Excel 5.0 - Help dialog (actually a window) Microstation95 - all dialogs Office97 - paperclip help The Appian Desktop Manager controls windows and dialog boxes by examining and modifying system messages which create, move and destroy dialog boxes and windows. There are hundreds of ways that programmers can create dialogs. With all of these variables, the desktop manager is not perfect and can either miss or incorrectly move a dialog box or a window. In either case, we would like to know about it so that we can add the offending application to our test suite in order to correct the problem. If you have a desktop manager problem, please e-mail the offending application's name to techsupport@appiangraphics.com. 10) Win95 installation notes ================================================================ The device manager for Win95 automatically detects changes to the system and offers to install or search for new hardware for you. This plug-n-play capability, while a worthwhile effort, does not always work. The bottom line is that Win95 attempts to hide you from complexity by making assumptions in the installation of new hardware. This can cause the installation failure of your display board(s). The "safer" way to install is to prevent Win95 from making any assumptions about your hardware. Appian recommends the following general procedure for Win95 installation. a) If at any point in the installation Win95 asks you to start the Hardware Wizard or to Search for new Hardware, select Cancel. b) The first time that Win95 detects new hardware and asks you for a driver, select "Have Disk..." and insert the Jeronimo disk to install the driver. c) Any subsequent Win95 new hardware detections should be canceled (click the cancel button). d) After booting into Win95, bring up the Display Control Panel. If Win95 asks to start the Hardware Wizard, click Cancel. e) Once you are in the Display Control Panel, click the Settings tab to bring up the settings page. Click the Change Display Type button. f) Verify that the Jeronimo driver is listed under the Adapter type box. If it is not, click the Change button and follow the instructions to change your driver. g) At this point you may close the Display Control Panel and shutdown the machine (DO NOT RESTART WHEN WINDOWS ASKS YOU). You have now installed the card and driver correctly. Subsequent boots will use the Appian driver. 11) Using HydraVision SW with more than one J2 ================================================================ HydraVision software will automatically recognize and use more than one Jeronimo board if it is detected in the system. All additional Jeronimo boards must, however, be configured for secondary channel operation. The procedure for this is described in the Jeronimo User's Guide. When using multiple Jeronimo boards, Appian recommends installing each board separately; that is, complete the hardware installation as described in the Jeronimo User's Guide for a single board, boot up, load the HyrdraVision drivers, and verify that the system is operating properly. At this point, when you install additional boards in the system, HydraVision will automatically detect and use the additional channels. Monitors can then be enabled through the Appian Multi-Monitor tab in the Display Properties Control Panel. WARNING - Do not use more than one J2N in one system. This can cause bus loading problems and lead to the crash of your system. Use the J2 bridge product instead of the J2N bridgeless board when you are installing more than one J2 in a system.Download Driver Pack
