To install Jeronimo Pro drivers and HydraVision, please use the CD-ROM that shipped with the Jeronimo Pro or perform the following steps. (a) If you downloaded the Jeronimo Pro driver build from the internet, unzip the downloaded file to a temporary subdirectory on your hard drive. Appian recommends unzipping files to your hard drive rather than to floppy disks as the driver files are larger than the 1.44 MB capacity of a single diskette. The subdirectory you create on your hard drive should be empty of all files prior to unzipping the Jeronimo Pro driver file. This temporary subdirectory can be deleted after driver installation. (b) Follow the installation instructions in the Jeronimo Pro User's Guide using the location of your temporary subdirectory in place of the CD-ROM. 2) How to Contact Appian ================================================================ Appian Technical Support may be reached at 1-800-422-7369 or by email at support@appian.com. Appian Sales may be reached at 1-800-727-7426. Appian is available on the Web at http://www.appian.com 3) International Support ================================================================ HydraVision provides support for Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 in any of these languages, HydraVision will automatically load the appropriate localized Control Panel. If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 in a non-supported language, the HydraVision Control Panel will be available in English only. 4) HydraVision Multiple Monitor DirectX Support ================================================================ DirectX is incompatible with graphics devices that use more than one frame buffer -- such as Appian's Jeronimo Pro. DirectX assumes that the screen is fully contained in one frame buffer and will access the frame buffer directly, bypassing Appian's driver. When this occurs, the DirectX operation may fail. Appian has developed technology (AppianDX) that monitors this scenario and manages the DirectX interface to allow proper operation. However, AppianDX works only with DirectX applications that use off-screen memory as opposed to writing data directly to the screen. Jeronimo Pro supports the following DirectX operations: (a) Exclusive Mode (DirectX takes over the entire screen). Jeronimo Pro supports this mode with no errors. (b) Windowed Mode (DirectX plays back in a window). The Jeronimo Pro supports this mode as long as the DirectX window is fully contained on one screen. If the DirectX window is moved onto a monitor split, the Jeronimo Pro will not process DirectX commands in hardware until the window is moved to a single screen. When running Active Movie, this will result in slower video. Note that some DirectX applications running in this mode may cause errors when their window is dragged to another screen. Also note that when an active DirectX window is split between two monitors, your mouse response will become sluggish and some screen degradation may appear. (c) Current Jeronimo Pro drivers for Windows NT 4.0 implement AppianDX to allow for DirectX hardware acceleration across multiple monitors. This solves the performance and quality degradation of DirectX acceleration across multiple monitors. Please note that AppianDX works only with DirectX applications that use off-screen memory as opposed to writing data directly to the screen. (d) Disabled Mode (DirectX is disabled via the HydraVision Control Panel). In this case, all operations will work but hardware acceleration will not be used. This will result in reduced performance. Under Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, the enable DirectX checkbox (located under Performance Options on the Multi-Monitor tab page) controls whether or not hardware acceleration is used for DirectX. If you are having problems with a DirectX application, please disable DirectX acceleration. Please note that you cannot run one DirectX application in windowed mode and another DirectX application in exclusive mode simultaneously with any graphics adapter. 5) HydraVision Multiple Monitor OpenGL Support ================================================================ By default, OpenGL is not accelerated when using multiple monitors. By enabling OpenGL acceleration in the HydraVision Control Panel Performance Options dialog box, OpenGL can be hardware accelerated on the first, or default monitor only. When accelerated, OpenGL drawing commands which go to monitors other than the first monitor will not be processed. If OpenGL programs appear to be drawing incorrectly, try disabling OpenGL acceleration through the Multi-Monitor tab page, Performance Options dialog box. Note that this control is available in Windows NT 4.0 only. 6) How to Uninstall Jeronimo Pro Drivers and HydraVision ================================================================ To uninstall the Jeronimo Pro drivers and HydraVision software in Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, use the Add/Remove Programs control panel utility. 7) HydraVision Desktop Manager Tips and Notes ================================================================ The HydraVision desktop manager follows a few rules of operation. (a) Certain applications use windows instead of dialog boxes to communicate with the user (an example is MicroStation 95 which uses windows for file open, save, etc.). In this case HydraVision will not relocate the window since only dialog boxes are relocated. (b) Single Monitor Windows is a very complex control that essentially attempts to thwart an application's control over its own window. Some applications will not allow this control initially and will start across a monitor split. Clicking on the application's title bar will cause it to be relocated to a single monitor. In the case of playing an AVI in exclusive mode with Single Monitor Windows enabled, only half of the displayed video will appear. To avoid this problem, disable Single Monitor Windows or view the AVI in windowed mode. (c) In some cases, desktop management of certain application windows or dialog boxes causes problems. If the application expects to see its dialog box or window on a particular area of the screen and the window is not there, errors can occur ranging from mild to severe. HydraVision purposely does not control certain dialog boxes known to have this problem. If, however, you experience a problem running an application when HydraVision is loaded (the desktop manager), please try unloading HydraVision and running the application again. If the cause of the problem was HydraVision, please let Appian know (contact information is below). (d) Some applications use child windows for dialog boxes. These child windows are not relocated by the desktop manager because (1) they are bound inside their parent window and (2) HydraVision by definition does not relocate windows. Some applications which do this (but not all) are: Adobe PageMaker 6 - Spell and Find dialogs Corel Draw 6 - all dialogs under NT (W95 is fine) Corel Quattro Pro - all dialogs Word 7.0 - Spell dialog Excel 5.0 - Help dialog (actually a window) Microstation95 - all dialogs Office97 - Paperclip help The Appian desktop manager controls windows and dialog boxes by examining and modifying system messages which create, move and destroy dialog boxes and windows. There are hundreds of ways that programmers can create dialogs. With all of these variables, the desktop manager is not perfect and can either miss or incorrectly move a dialog box or a window. In either case, Appian would like to know about it so that we can add the offending application to our test suite in order to correct the problem. If you have a desktop manager problem, please e-mail the application's name to support@appiangraphics.com. 8) HydraVision Control Panel Issues ================================================================ On the Appian Multi-Monitor tab page, a checkbox is available to enable individual monitor refresh rates. When this option is selected, the refresh rate displayed on the Windows Settings tab page may not be accurate. This is because Windows assumes it is only addressing a single monitor and cannot account for two or more independent refresh rate settings. Note that under Windows 95, selection of individual refresh rates is always enabled. A similar problem can occur with reported desktop resolution. Anomalies between the resolution reported by the Settings tab and the resolution reported by the HydraVision Extended Display Setting tab can occur running in either single monitor mode or multi- monitor mode. This is because Windows assumes it is only addressing a single monitor at a single resolution and cannot account for independent resolution settings. When making a bit depth (color palette) change from the Settings tab in Windows 95, it is important to adjust the resolution (desktop area) to reflect the size of a single monitor desktop. This will prevent Windows from selecting an undesired, unselected, and possibly unsupported desktop resolution during the bit depth change. If the control panel is open when a hot key is activated that changes desktop settings (zoom and current settings), the control panel will not reflect the changes until it is closed and re-opened. If you select large fonts while running with a 640x480 display, the display control panel will be clipped when it is opened. Please select small fonts on the Settings tab when running 640x480 display resolutions if Windows has not automatically selected small fonts for you. 9) Appian MultiDesk and Per Application Desktop Management ================================================================ Appian's HydraVision desktop management software includes support for multiple desktops in Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. Up to nine virtual desktops can be accessed and configured from the system tray by right clicking the MultiDesk icon. Desktops can be enabled, named, and arranged according to user preferences and an Appian hot key is available for accessing virtual desktops with a single keystroke. HydraVision desktop management software also includes individual application settings that allow you to override global desktop management settings on a per application basis. Individual application settings can be accessed by right clicking on the Appian icon in the upper right corner of an application window or can be accessed from Appian's Desktop Management tab. 10) Jeronimo Pro With Video ================================================================ Jeronimo Pro Four Port models are available with optional video capture and overlay display capability. Please note that video support is implemented and available under Windows NT 4.0 only. To display video with the Jeronimo Pro, you must select a color depth of 16bpp or 32bpp from the Settings tab of the Windows Display Properties dialog box. Appian video overlay will not display correctly at 8bpp. Running Appian video overlay may corrupt fonts if Appian DirectDraw acceleration is enabled under Performance Options and a DirectDraw application is running. You will not see this problem if you turn off DirectDraw acceleration or if you do not run DirectDraw applications. Note that when running a single monitor only, DirectDraw acceleration will be turned on by default. 11) Remote Access Software (NetMeeting, pcAnywhere) ================================================================ When using some applications, it is important to adjust the resolution on the Windows Settings tab to accurately reflect the size of the multiple monitor desktop. This will ensure that applications such as Microsoft NetMeeting are fully functional and operate properly in the multi-mon environment. For example, if the Settings tab is reporting a resolution of 800x600 with two monitors enabled, the sharing function in NetMeeting will not work. However, changing the resolution on the Settings tab to report the actual size of the desktop (in this case, 1600x600) enables proper operation of NetMeeting sharing. Once NetMeeting has sharing enabled, you can disable monitors but you cannot enable monitors without shutting off NetMeeting sharing. To shut off NetMeeting sharing, go to your Windows NT control panel and select Devices. Find the mnmdd device and select the StartUp button. Select the disable option and click OK. Reboot. NetMeeting sharing will now be shut off and you can enable monitors at will. To turn sharing back on again, use the NetMeeting menu selection. Some applications which "hook" the display driver (such as pcAnywhere) can have problems when used with multi-monitor display systems. pcAnywhere 8.0 has a confirmed problem with the Jeronimo Pro but a patch is available from Symantec for pcAnywhere v8.02. 12) Using HydraVision With More Than One Jeronimo Pro ================================================================ HydraVision software will automatically recognize and use more than one Jeronimo board if it is detected in the system. All additional Jeronimo boards must, however, be configured for secondary channel operation. The procedure for this is described in the Jeronimo Pro User's Guide. When using multiple Jeronimo boards, Appian recommends installing each board separately; that is, complete the hardware installation for a single board, boot up, load the device drivers and HydraVision software, and verify that the system is operating properly. At this point, when you install additional boards in the system, HydraVision will automatically detect and use the additional channels. Monitors can then be enabled through the Appian Multi-Monitor tab in the Display Properties Control Panel. 13) Legal Information ================================================================ This material is made available for use under a license from Appian Graphics and its use is subject to all conditions and restrictions provided by the license agreement.
