Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 and NT 4.0 Driver Installation For Ethernet+Modem PC Card File Descriptions: ------------------ OEMSETUP.INF Windows NT Device installation information file ETHPCM18.SYS Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 driver ETHPCM18.HLP Installation help file ETHPCMDM.INF Modem installation information file README.TXT This file Note: So far the Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0 driver can support simultaneous Ethernet and Modem function only for the notebooks with the Intel PCIC compatible PCMCIA controller. For notebooks with other types of PCMCIA controllers, if you install ETHPCM18.SYS, only the Ethernet LAN function will perform. To use the modem function, do not install ETHPCM18.SYS as described below. All you have to do is insert this card into a PCMCIA slot. Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0 will enable the card as a modem card automatically. Take the following steps to enable the modem function. In Windows NT 3.51: 1. In the Main group of NT, select the Control Panel icon. 2. In the Control Panel window, select the Ports icon. 3. In the Ports dialog window, select the last COM port. 4. Click on the Settings option and then click <OK> to accept the default settings. 5. Then go to the Accessories group and select the Terminal icon. 6. Select the Communications option. 7. In the Communication dialog window, select the same COM port you chose in Step 3 from the Connector box. In Windows NT 4.0: 1. In the Main group of NT, select the Control Panel icon. 2. In the Control Panel window, select the Modems icon. 3. The Install New Modem window will appear. 4. Follow the screen instructions to complete the installation. Windows NT 3.51 Installation Procedure: --------------------------------------- 1) In the Main group of NT, select the Control Panel icon. 2) In the Control Panel window, select the Network icon. 3) In the Network Settings dialog box, select the "Add Adapter" button. The Add Network Adapter dialog box appears. 4) In the list of network cards, select "<other> Requires disk from manufacturer", and press <Enter>. 5) Insert the driver diskette in the floppy diskette drive. Enter drive and pathname (e.g. A:\WINNT) and click <OK>. 6) In the Select OEM Option dialog box, you will see "Ethernet+Modem PC Card" in the menu. Click the <OK> button to install it. 7) Then the "Ethernet+Modem PC Card LAN Setup" dialog box appears. Select the proper values for the "LAN IRQ Level," "Memory Base Address," and "LAN I/O Port Address." Please make sure the resource values you select are not in use by any other device in the system. Press the <OK> button. 8) Select the proper values for the "Modem IRQ Level," " Modem COM Port," and "Modem I/O Port." Please be sure not to select the same Modem IRQ value as that for the LAN function. Press the <OK> Button. The typical modem IRQ and I/O port assignments are shown below: COM1: IRQ 4, I/O Port 0x3F8 (0x represents a hexadecimal number.) COM2: IRQ 3, I/O Port 0x2F8. COM3: IRQ 4, I/O Port 0x3E8. COM4: IRQ 3, I/O Port 0x2E8. 9) Windows NT now copies ETHPCM18.SYS and the OEMSETUP.INF from the driver diskette to C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS and C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 respectively. Next time if you want to reinstall the adapter drivers on your system, you do not need to install from the driver diskette. 10) To complete installation, bind the adapter to transport drivers by selecting the "Bindings" button under the "Network Setting" dialog box. 11) Restart the system to bring up the network and modem functions. 12) When Windows NT restarts, the network should be functioning. You should also be able to use the modem installed on the COM port as shown in step 8. Windows NT 4.0 Installation Procedure: -------------------------------------- 1) In the Control Panel, double click on the "Network" icon. The "Network" window appears. Select the "Adapters" tab, and press the "Add" button. The "Select Network Adapter" window appears. 2) Press the "Have Disk" button. In the "Insert Disk" dialog box, enter the name of the directory in which the driver and installation files reside. (e.g. A:\WINNT,) and then press <OK>. 3) The "Select OEM Option" window appears, with "Ethernet+Modem PC Card" listed in the window. Press the <OK> button. 4) Then the "Ethernet+Modem PC Card LAN Setup" dialog box appears. Select the proper values for the "LAN IRQ Level," "Memory Base Address," and "LAN I/O Port Address." Please make sure the resource values you select are not in use by any other device in the system. Press the <OK> button. 5) The "Ethernet+Modem PC Card Modem Setup" dialog box appears. Select the proper values for the "Modem IRQ Level," "Modem COM Port," and "Modem I/O Port." Please make sure you do not select the same Modem IRQ value as that for the LAN. Press <OK>. The typical modem IRQ and I/O port assignments are shown below: COM1: IRQ 4, I/O Port 0x3F8 (0x represents a hexadecimal number.) COM2: IRQ 3, I/O Port 0x2F8. COM3: IRQ 4, I/O Port 0x3E8. COM4: IRQ 3, I/O Port 0x2E8. 6) Windows NT then copies the necessary files from the driver diskette to your system. When this is done, click the <Close> button. NT will go through a network configuration process. When NT asks you to restart the computer, do so. 7) When Windows NT is restarted, you have to install the modem. Select the Modem icon in the Control Panel. An "Install New Modem" window appears. Check the "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list" box. Click the "Next" button. 8) Windows NT presents a list of modem models. Select the "Have Disk" option. An "Install From Disk" window appears. Insert the driver diskette in the floppy drive. In the "Copy manufacturer's file from" dialog box, enter the name of the directory in which the driver and installation files reside (e.g. A:\WINNT,) and then click <OK>. 9) Windows NT displays the modem models. Select "PCMCIA Ethernet+Modem Card (modem)" from the list. Then click the "Next" button. 10) Windows NT prompts you to select the COM port for the modem. Click on the "Select ports" option and highlight the COM port as shown in Step 5. Please make sure you select the same modem I/O Port and IRQ that you specified in Step 5. Then click the "Next" button. 11) When Windows NT displays "Your modem has been set up successfully", click on the "Finish" button to complete installation. 12) Then the "Modems Properties" window appears. Configure the modem with appropriate properties, and then click the "Close" button. Now the modem function should be working. Trouble shooting hints: ----------------------- It is vital for the user to assign non-conflicting resources to the LAN and modem devices. Windows NT is not a plug-and-play system. It is the user's responsibility to make sure the resources assigned to the LAN and to the modem device are not already occupied by some other device in the system. If at Windows NT initialization the Service Control Manager displays "At least one service or driver failed during System Startup. Use the Event Viewer to examine the event log for details." Follow the instructions listed below to view the System Log file to check if the failure is related to this PC Card. If either the LAN or modem function fails, more than likely it is due to a resource conflict. You can take the following steps to examine the resources currently in use: 1) Click on the "Start" button. 2) Select "Programs," "Administrative tools," and "Windows NT diagnostics." 3) Select the "Resource" tab. 4) Click the "IRQ" button to see the IRQ's that are already assigned. When the user allocates an IRQ to the LAN or modem function, the IRQ should not be in use by another device. 5) Click the "I/O Port" to see the I/O ports in use. When the user allocates a set of I/O addresses to the LAN or modem function, the I/O addresses should not be in use by another device. 6) Click the "Memory" button to see the memory range in use. If you assign conflicting resources, the symptom varies. The system may appear to hang at initialization, at the shutdown stage, or during the course of operation. In these cases, you should remove the PC card, and restart the system without the card in a PCMCIA slot. After the system comes up, select a different set of resources, insert PC Card back into the slot, and restart the system. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trademarks: Microsoft Windows NT is a trademark of Microsoft Corporation.Download Driver Pack
