W840ND.SYS
Winbond Electronics Corporation
Description:
1. W840ND.SYS is a NDIS 4.x driver for Windows 95 Platform.
If there is only one 840 card, the driver will automatically get IOBASE
and IRQ from PCI Configuration Space.
If there is more than one 840 card, this driver will automatically select
a free 840 card to load.
2. W840ND.INF is a Network Setup Information File for Windows 95 Platform.
3. In Win95 OSR2 environment (version 4.00.950.B), the vendor ID and
the device ID in PCI configuration space of the 840 card need to be
the same as the W840ND.INF file described.
for example :
below line in W840ND.INF
%w89c840.DeviceDesc%=w89c840.ndi, PCI\VEN_1050&DEV_0840
describes that the vendor ID = 0x1050 and device ID = 0x0840.
Installation:
1. Plug Winbond W89C840 card into one of the PCI slots of your PC.
2. Turn power on then boot from Windows 95.
3. If Windows 95 prompts PCI Ethernet Controller in New Hardware Found
dialog box, then please follow below steps to install driver :
3.1 Select "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer" from New
Hardware Found dialog box, then click OK button.
3.2 Type the path name that contains W840ND.SYS and W840ND.INF files and
click the 'OK' button.
3.3 When the 'Winbond W89C840 PCI Ethernet Adapter' dialog box appears,
press <Enter>.
3.4 Follow screen instructions to complete the process.
4. If Windows 95 does not prompt PCI Ethernet Controller in New Hardware
Found dialog box, then please follow below steps to install driver :
4.1 Click the 'Network' Icon in the Control Panel Group.
4.2 Click the 'Add' button in the 'Network' Dialog Box.
4.3 Select the 'Adapter' item and click the 'Add' button in the 'Select
Network Component' Dialog Box.
4.4 Click the 'Have Disk' button in the 'Select Network adapters' Dialog
Box.
4.5 Type the path name that contains W840ND.SYS and W840ND.INF files and
click the 'OK' button.
4.6 When the 'Winbond W89C840 PCI Ethernet Adapter' dialog box appears,
press <Enter>.
4.7 Follow screen instructions to complete the process.
5. Restart your computer.
Use:
1. boot your computer,
2. There are 5 parameters can be set as you like, otherwise just use default values.
a. BurstLen = 32 dwords
Burst Length defines the maximum number of long words that can be
transferred within one PCI burst transaction.
The reasonable values are "1 dword", "2 dwords", "4 dwords",
"8 dwords", "16 dwords" and "32 dwords".
b. CacheAlign = 32 dwords
Cache Alignment defines the address boundary for data burst.
The reasonable values are "8 dwords", "16 dwords" and "32 dwords".
c. Threshold = full packet
This value decides the transmit threshold level of the transmit FIFO.
Transmission will start immediately after the transmit FIFL has
reached the threshold level or full pkt has been transferred to the
transmit FIFO if the frame length is less than the transmit threshold
level.
TxThreshold Transmit Threshold Level
00H full pkt
01H 16 bytes
02H 32 bytes
-- --
7FH 2032 bytes"
d. LineSpeed = AutoDetect
This adapter can be operationed in 10M or 100M Mbps.
The reasonable values are AutoDetect(auto detect line speed by the
driver), 10M(set the line speed is 10M) and 100M(set the line speed
is 100M).
e. FullDuplex = AutoDetect
This adapter can be in half or full duplex mode. In half duplex mode,
the W89C840 can only either transmit or receive. In full duplex mode,
the W89C840 can transmit and receive at the same time.
The reasonable values are AutoDetect(auto detect full duplex function
by the driver), Disable(disable full duplex), and Enable(enable full
duplex).
Trouble Shooting:
1. Message: 'Your network adapter Winbond W89C840 PCI Ethernet Adapter[0000]
is not working properly. You may need to set it up again.
For more information, see the Network Troubleshooter in Windows
Help.'
Solution: Make sure that your W89C840 card is plugged into your system.
2. Condition: The Windows 95 argues resource conflicts.
Solution: Try to change the PCI slot of 840 card such that it may be
assigned other resource.
3. Condition: For Windows 95 ndis3.1 backward compatible.
Solution: You can install the driver \ndis3\w840nd.sys after extracting
win95 drivers.
