==================================================================== How to install Windows for Workgroup 3.11 with W840ND.DOS (NDIS2) ==================================================================== * Please follow the procedure below to setup Windows for Workgroup 3.11: 1. If you have not installed WfW 3.11, install it with "no network card" now. 2. Invoke WfW 3.11, open "NETWORK SETUP" and click "Drivers" button. 3. Insert Winbond Drivers diskette into drive A: 4. REMOVE old network driver, and ADD "Unlisted or Updated Network Adapter". 5. Type "A:\WFW311" when it asks for a vendor-provided driver. 6. Follow the direction to finish the setup procedure. * Trouble Shooting 1. Message: "!! No W89C840 card detected" Solution: Make sure that your W89C840 card is plugged steadily. 2. Message: "!! No free W89C840 card" Solution: One driver for one card. Make sure that there is less drivers loaded than card plugged. If option keyword SelectedID is assigned, make sure that all node ID's assigned is correct or let drivers without SelectedID be loaded after those with SelectedID. 3. Message: "!! Cannot open PROTMAN$" Solution: Make sure that PROTMAN.DOS is loaded before W840ND.DOS, and it is initialized successfully. If the syntax of PROTOCOL.INI is incorrect, PROTMAN$ cannot be loaded. 4. Message: "!! Bad Parameter in PROTOCOL.INI" Solution: The parameter is invalid. For example, the correct SelectedID format need two single quotation signs ('). If you fail to do it, this message will be shown. 5. Message: "!! Unknown Keyword in PROTOCOL.INI" Solution: W840ND only accepts two keywords: DRIVERNAME and SELECTED. Other keywords are unknown. Notice that, PCI bus need not assign IOBASE and INTERRUPT. 6. Message: "!! Specified SELECTEDID is absent or bound" Solution: You specified a node ID at keyword SelectedID, and this ID is bound by another drivers or can not be found. Make sure that the ID is correct. * Version Release 1.00 07-11-1997 This is the first revision of W840ND.DOS 1.0.0 MAC Driver. 1.10 01-12-1998 Fix the bug that the system will generate syntax error when the user sets the parameter FULLDUPLEX. 1.20 06-02-1998 1. Add one parameter 'Nway', 2. Fix the bug issued by DavidCom's PHY. ===================================================================== How to install Windows for Workgroup 3.11 with W840ND.386 (NDIS3) ===================================================================== Description: 1. W840ND.386 is an NDIS 3.x driver for Windows for Workgroup 3.11 Platforms. If there is only one 840 card, the driver will automatically read IOBASE and IRQ from PCI Configuration Space. If there is more than one 840 card, user can indicate a specified 840 card by inputing an ID. If user does not input an ID to select a specified 840 card, this driver will automatically select a 840 card to load. 2. OEMSETUP.INF is a Network Setup Information File for Windows for Workgroup 3.11 Platforms. Installation: 1. Load W840ND.386 and OEMSETUP.INF files into local hard disk. 2. Run WFW 3.11 by typing WIN from DOS prompt. 3. Click the 'Network' Iron in the Main Program Group. 4. Click the 'Network Setup' Iron from the Network Window. 5. Click the 'Drivers' button from the 'Network Setup' Dialog Box. 6. Click the 'Add Adapters' button from the 'Option' Dialog Box. 7. Press <Enter> to start the installation processes. 10.When 'Winbond W89C840 PCI Ethernet Adapter' Dialog Box appears, press <Enter>. 11.If more than one 840 card is installed on your computer, you can select a specified 840 card by inputing an Ethernet ID. Click the 'Setup' button from the 'Winbond W89C840 PCI Ethernet Adapter'Dialog Box. Select the 'Selected adapter's ID[if multi-840 used]' item. Key in Ethernet ID. Click the 'Setup' button. 12.Follow the screen instructions to complete the installation process. 13.Restart your computer. Use: 1. Run WFW 3.11 by typing WIN from DOS prompt. 2. If more than one 840 card is installed on your computer, you can select a specified 840 card to load (refer to step 2 to step 11 in the Installation section). 3. There are 6 parameters can be set as you like, otherwise just use default values. a. BurstLen = 32 longwords Burst Length defines the maximum number of long words that can be transferred within one PCI burst transaction. The reasonable values are "1 longword", "2 longwords", "4 longwords", "8 longwords", "16 longwords" and "32 longwords". b. CacheAlign = 32 longword alignment Cache Alignment defines the address boundary for data burst. The reasonable values are "8 longword alignment", "16 longword alignment" and "32 longword alignment". c. Threshold = full packet This value decides the transmit threshold level of the transmit FIFO. Transmission will start immediately after the transmit FIFL has reached the threshold level or full pkt has been transferred to the transmit FIFO if the frame length is less than the transmit threshold level. TxThreshold Transmit Threshold Level 00H full pkt 01H 16 bytes 02H 32 bytes -- -- 7FH 2032 bytes" d. LineSpeed = AutoDetect This adapter can be operationed in 10M or 100M Mbps. The reasonable values are AutoDetect(auto detect line speed by the driver), 10M(set the line speed is 10M) and 100M(set the line speed is 100M). e. FullDuplex = AutoDetect This adapter can be in half or full duplex mode. In half duplex mode, the W89C840 can only either transmit or receive. In full duplex mode, the W89C840 can transmit and receive at the same time. The reasonable values are AutoDetect(auto detect full duplex function by the driver), Disable(disable full duplex), and Enable(enable full duplex). f. nway = On The parameter 'nway' is used to disable or enable the autonegotiation function. The default value of nway is on. The reasonable values are OFF(disable the nway function) and ON(enable the nway function). g. SelectedID This parameter is necessary when your system is equipped with multiple W89C840 cards. For each driver, you must assign a unique physical address. The value of this parameter is a hexadecimal string of 12 digits. Trouble Shooting: 1. Message: 'Your network adapter WB$W89C840 is not working properly. You may need to set it up again. For more information, see 'Troubleshooting' in your 'Workgroup Add-On User's Guide' The following error occurred while loading protocol number 0. Error 58: The network has responded incorrectly. You may need to reconfiguration the protocol using Network Setup. If your computer is a portable, make sure it is connected to its docking sation.' Solution: Make sure that your W89C840 card is plugged into your system. 2. Condition: The Windows for Workgroup 3.11 can not boot properly. Solution: Make sure that your W89C840 PCI card is connected to the cable. Histories of Release: ***) 1.00, 07-17-1997 First release. ***) 1.10, 06-04-1998 1.
