Readme.txt file for FLASH.EXE This program is used for loading code into Simple Technology 56K SimpleJack modems; it requires the Windows operating system (Win 3.1 or Win95 and Wn98). NOTE: This software will not run on Windows NT or the Mac operating systems! Preliminaries: 1) If you are running Win95, especially on a laptop computer, you must check for the power-saving feature and disable it before attempting a code upgrade. 2) From the main window (desktop) go to start/settings/control panel/ power/PC-Card modems. 3) If the power-saving feature exists, make sure the box before 'Turn off PC-Card modem when not in use' is NOT checked. Upgrade: 1) If you are reading this on a disk sent to you by Simple Technology you may run FLASH.EXE directly from the disk or copy it to your hard drive. To run it from this disk proceed to step 5. If you are reading this after having downloaded from the Simple Technology WEB site or BBS, continue to step 2. 2) Create a directory, SJ_UPGRD, for example. 3) Copy the contents of the disk ( or the EXE file) to the new directory. 4) If you copied the executable to the new directory, run it. The directory will contain FLASH.EXE and one or more files with the .HEX extension. Set the attributes of FLASHLDR.HEX to HIDDEN. (in DOS: attrib +h flashldr.hex; in WIN 3.X: from the file manger click on the file, flashldr.hex, click on FILES, PROPERTIES, HIDDEN, OK; in WIN95: from the Explorer click on the file, flashldr.hex, click the right mouse button, click on PROPERTIES, HIDDEN, APPLY, OK). This prevents the file from being shown when selecting firmware files. If you accidently load it into the modem, the modem will be RUINED. 5) Verify your modem is installed and running properly. 6) Run FLASH.EXE. 7) When prompted, select the code to be loaded. DO NOT SELECT 'FLASHLDR.HEX'. - p12297a.hex: k56flex code supporting data, fax, and voice (answering machine) - p60598a.hex: k56flex/V.90 code supporting data, fax, and voice 8) Upon completion the modem must be un-powered for the new code to operate properly. This may be done by restarting your computer or removing and re-inserting the modem. 9) After changing the firmware your computer may not recognize the modem and will ask for the installation disk. The disk contains new INF files which support the firmware. When the operating system asks for the INF files, insert this disk and select 'Disk provided by the manufacturer', or use the 'BROWSE' option to select the directory into which you installed FLASH.EXE 10) Internet users that connect with dial-up networking win need to change the connection to specify the correct modem. To do this click on "My Computer" then click on dial-up networking. This will show the connection icons that have been created for your internet service providers. Hightlight the one in question and the go to file and pull down to properties. Down at the bottom it will read "connect using", this will need to be changed to Simple Technology V.90 SimpleJack. After this is done you are now ready to connect at the new V.90 standard. You may need to verify that your internet service provider has upgraded to this standard. If they have not done so, and are at one of the previous standards (KFLEX or X2) then the connection is limited to V.34 and/or 33.6BPS. 11) To verify that the modem has been upgraded to V.90, a test can be run to see code version. Go to control panel and double click on modems. This will show the current modems installed on your computer system. Next go to diagnostics tab at the top. This will show which comm port the modem is assaigned to. Hightlight this port and click on "More Info". After a few seconds a screen will come up and show the properties of the modem. At the bottom of the screen the it will list a series of ATI commands from 1-7. The one is question is the ATI3 command.
