*** This document is for the EigerCom 56k PC Card Modem models. Last updated 8/12/98 Contents Welcome and Congratulations ......................................... Section A A Word About MS-DOS/Win3.x .......................................... Section B Information About Setup.exe ......................................... Section C K56Flex, x2 or v.90? ................................................ Section D +++ Section A Thank you for purchasing the EigerCom 56k PC Card Modem. Be sure to run the Setup.exe file prior to inserting the modem into the computer (See Section D). This will allow the drivers to be copied correctly to your computer. Setup.exe can be run in either Windows 95 or NT 4.0. +++ Section B Windows 3.x laptops are usually configured with Card and Socket Drivers. If you are missing these (per diagnostics explained within the manual), then you should contact your laptop manufacturer first for software that is made specifically for your laptop. Listed below are software manufacturers of Card and Socket Services. Contact one of these vendors in the chance that your laptop manufacturer is no longer supporting your computer. SystemSoft 313 Speen St. Natick, MA 01760 508-651-0088 Phoenix Technology 2575 McCabe Way Irvine, CA 92714 714-440-8000 DataBook 112 Prospect St., Babcock Hall Ithaca, NY 14850 716-292-5720 +++ Section C The file CSSOFF.EXE is to disable Real Mode Card and Socket Services that can conflict with Windows 95. It will successfully remark out System Soft Drivers that are currently used in a small percentage of newer laptops. This program automatically runs when installing Setup.exe. If after the system removes the real mode drivers, the card is not recognized (after reboot), then go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager, PCMCIA Controller. Highlight and remove the Controller listed. Restart the computer and Windows 95 will find the controller again and reinstall it. Sometimes this is necessary as System Soft, and other Card and Socket Services, bind themselves to the Windows 95 controller. Windows 95 itself should be capable of controlling the PC Cards. Reasons laptop manufacturers would install CSS is to provide support for the PC Cards under DOS, as DOS itself does not have the support like Windows 95 does. If you must not have Real Modem Card and Socket Drivers remarked out for some reason, then simply insert the modem WITHOUT running the Setup.exe. This is not recommended as it has been found that most older versions of System Soft are not capable of correctly installing new 56k Modems. Also, the program creates backups of the Config.sys and System.ini under the Config.Ei# and System.Ei# names to allow restoration of CSS if accidentally run. This would only be necessary if certain cards, such as Zoom MPEG Cards are used. +++ Section D Please check our website on a continuous basis for updated flash programs that will upgrade the modem to the newer revisions of the Lucent Technologies/Rockwell K56Flex code, Cirrus Logic's x2, and the International Standard v.90 code. The new v.90 code is ready and can be downloaded from our website. Please check our website for information on how to upgrade and to obtain the code at http://www.eigerlabs.com Before upgrading, be sure that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) supports v.90. After the update, you will lose the K56Flex protocol as the v.90 replaces it (x2 version of the cards will support x2 & v.90 concurrently). This means that connections to a K56Flex ISP will only result in connections up to v.34+ (33.6kpbs). To revert you will need to download the K56Flex code and downgrade the modem. Upgrading and downgrading will not harm the modem, but will increase the chance of corrupting the modem due to interruptions in the flashing, or other discrepancies. If corruption occurs via interruptions of the flashing, then the modem will need to be returned to Eiger Labs, Inc. for modem replacement.
