Installation Instructions for the Earthmate(r) USB Power Adapter Cable

Systems Supported:
* Microsoft(r) Windows(r)  98, Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), running on an IBM-compatible PC with USB port and CD-ROM drive.
* Mac(r) OS 9.0 or higher, running on a Macintosh(r)-compatible computer with USB port and CD-ROM drive.

Windows  Setup:
1. Close all other applications and insert the USB Drivers disc into your CD-ROM drive.
2. Plug the USB cable into the USB port on your desktop or laptop computer. The Add New Hardware Wizard begins automatically.
3. Follow the screen directions to complete the installation. When asked "What do you want Windows to do?" it is recommended that you use the default "Search for the best driver for your device" option.
4. When the Add New Hardware Wizard prompts for the path for the USB drivers, check off all but the "Specify a location" option. Enter the path to the appropriate Windows version folder on the Drivers disc or click Browse... to locate to the CD-ROM drive containing the Drivers disc, expand the menu and select the appropriate Windows folder for the version installed on your machine. Click Next.
5. When installation is complete, verify the USB cable has been assigned a separate COM port number. To check the COM connection, click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and double-click System to view the System Properties dialog box. Click the Device Manager tab and double-click Ports to verify there is a COM setting listed after the device name KLSI USB to RS-232.

You can now access your Earthmate GPS Receiver through your computer's USB port by selecting the assigned COM setting within your mapping application.

Mac OS  Setup:
1. Click the Apple(r) menu on your desktop and choose Control Panels, click the Extensions Manager and disable any other extensions for USB hardware.
2. Click Restart under the Extensions Manager to restart your computer.
3. Once your computer has been restarted, insert the USB Driver disc into your CD-ROM drive and open the Mac OS folder.
4. Copy the Northstar USB Driver, Northstar USB HAL and Northstar USB Shim files from the Mac OS folder on the USB Drivers disc to the Extensions folder located within the System Folder on your hard drive.
5. Plug the USB cable into the USB port on your desktop or laptop computer.

You can now access your Earthmate GPS Receiver through your computer's USB port by initializing your GPS unit through your mapping application.

NOTE: Batteries are no longer required in the Earthmate GPS receiver. Power is provided through the USB cable.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
