                      Paradyne 7123 NULL Modem and
                      Firmware Download Procedures

This NULL modem is designed to utilize a PPP link to a Paradyne 7123 product
for the purpose of loading new firmware.  The 7123 must be directly connected
to the computer COM port. The NULL Modem will only run on a Windows 95 platform.
If you have previously installed the NULL Modem on your PC then, you need only
to perform steps V through VII to install new firmware. You will need to know
where you have run the "7XXXXXX.exe" file from and be in that directory (suggest
C:\7123.

I. Configuring Null Modem.
   
 1. From the Start menu select Setting/Control Panel.
 2. Select Modems from the Control Panel.

II.  Adding the Paradyne Generic Null Modem.
 1. From the Modems Properties dialog box, choose Add.
 2. Select "Other" in the Install New Modem dialog box and click "Next".

       Note: This screen will only appear if you have a PCMCIA
             modem card.

 3. Select "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list" box, click
    "Next".
 4. Select "Have Disk" in the Install New Modem dialog box .
 5. Key in the directory name where the mdmpdn.inf file (one of the extracted
    files)is located (if you followed these instructions it will be in the
    c:\7123 directory). Highlight the mdmpdn.inf file and click "OK".
 6. The Install From Disk dialog box will appear. Click "OK".
 7. The Install New Modem dialog box should appear after loading mdmpdn.inf
    file. Click the "Paradyne Corporation-Generic NULL Modem" and click
    "Next".
 8. Select an available Communications (COM) Port, and click "Next".
 9. The Install Modem dialog box will now state that your modem has been set
    up successfully. Click  "Finish".
10. The "Modems Properties" dialog box should now include the Generic Null
    Modem. Close the "Modems Properties" and "Control Panel" dialog boxes.

III. Making a new modem connection.

 1. Select "My Computer/Dial-Up Networking".
 2. Choose "Make New Connection".
 3. Enter new connection name ("7123 Null Modem" is suggested) and select
    "Paradyne Corporation Generic Null Modem".
 4. Click "Configure".
 5. Set the maximum speed to 115,200bps, select the "Connection Tab" and set the
    "Connection preferences" to 8 none and 1, make sure that none of the
    "Call preferences" boxes are checked, then click "OK".
 6. Click Next and enter a phone number (use dummy phone number).
 7. Click "Next".
 8. Click "Finish".

IV. Set up Dial-Up adapter.

 1. Select Network from Control Panel.
 2. Double click on  "TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter".
 3. Click the TAB "IP Address".
 4. If this panel has an IP Address and subnet mask click "OK". If does not
    then select "Specify IP Address" enter IP address 001.001.001.002 and
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0, click "OK".  Then click "OK" in the Network
    dialog box.
    Note: You will be asked to reset your PC, do so at this time.

V. 7123 COM Port setup and FTP Procedure

1. Under the "main/config/management/telnet" branch configure the following:
    Telnet Session: 		Enable
    Telnet Login Required: 	Disable
    Session Access Level: 	Level-1
    Inactivity Timeout: 	Disable
    FTP Session:                  Enable
    FTP Login Required:        Disable

2. Under the "main/config/management/com" branch configure the following:
    Port Use: 		Net Link
    Data Rate(Kbps): 	115.2 
    Character Length: 	8
    Parity: 		None
    Stop Bits: 		1
    Ignore Control Leads: 	Disable

    IP Address:                     001.001.001.001
    Subnet Mask:                  255.255.255.000
    RIP:                                None
    Link Protocol:                  PPP

3. Save configuration to the "Current Configuration".
	Note: When configuration is saved garbage data will appear on the ATI
            this is normal.

4. Close the ATI application.

FTP Download Description and Instructions:

In order to connect to the 7123 device for FTP download, you must establish
TCP/IP connectivity between your PC and the unit being downloaded. This can be
done by configuring a PPP link from the AUX port of the router to the COM port
of the 7123 or by connecting a PC to the COM port of the 7123. This procedure
is written for the PC connection.

VI. Establish Null Modem PPP link. 
 
 1. Select "Dial-Up Networking.
 2. Select 7123 NULL Modem.
 3. Click on "Connect".
 4. A progression of 4 windows will appear, each window will indicate what
    state the connection is in. The final window to appear is the window
    displaying the connection duration.  (When this window appears the PPP link
    is up and you can proceed with the  FTP.

VII. Download via FTP

 1. Open a DOS window and change directory to where the extracted files are
    located (if you followed these directions they are in the c:\7123 directory.
 2. Type in "ftp 1.1.1.1, press enter" in the DOS window. You should see a
    successful FTP login session established by the Paradyne 7123 unit.
 3. Depress "Enter", again.
 4. Type in "cd system".
 5. Type in "bin".
 6. Type in "hash".
 7. Type in "put RXXXXXX.ocd nam.ocd".
		where XXXXXX is the release number of the file received.	   

 8. Type in "bye" to close FTP.
 9. Telnet to the device and change the COM Port back to Terminal, 19200 all
    other settings should be fine. If a telnet session is not available bring up
    the ATI Program with settings of VT100 emulation, 19200 bps, 8 data bits, no
    parity, 1 stop bit. Power Reset the unit, then immediately press "Return"
    repeatly in rapid succession, at a rate of at least 1 press per second,
    until the "System Paused" screen appears (see Reset the Access Unit's COM
    Port for Factory Defaults FrameSaver 7123 Technical Reference).
10. Set COM port setting to default by answering "Yes".
11. Unit is now operational, you will need to perform a "switch and reset" from
    the Control menu to make the new code active.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
