Installation and FAQ for Windows 95 drivers
		Stingray VL and PCI

Introduction

This guide contains the information you need to install the
Windows 95 drivers for your Hercules Stingray VL or PCI.

One of the best features of Windows 95 is its adaptability to
the way you work. No matter what the task, there's probably
more than one way of accomplishing it. This is certainly true
with the installation of display drivers. There are a few ways
you can go about installing the drivers, so rather than document
every possible route you might choose to take, we've covered a
few possible methods. No matter how you install the display
drivers, Windows 95 makes it very intuitive, so it's hard to go
        wrong.

These instructions apply to the first retail release of Windows
        95. If you're still using an interim build, the procedure may
go a bit differently. As we've mentioned above, however, the
intuitive Windows 95 interface makes it hard to make a mistake,
so we doubt that you'll run into any problems.

The Windows 95 display drivers for the S501, S801 are available
on the Windows 95 installation CD (build 490 and later). The
files can be found in the /drivers/display/avance directory. Use
the following procedure to install the display drivers for the
        S501, S801 Stingray Card:

Installation Procedure #1: First Time Install.

If you are installing Windows 95 for the first time, Windows 95 will
detect the Stingray as a VGA adapter. Once Windows 95 is installed:

Open the "Display Properties" dialog box by clicking on the desktop with
the right mouse button and selecting "Properties" from the pop-up menu,
or by launching the "My Computer" icon, selecting "Control Panel" and
then selecting "Display."

From the "Display Properties" dialog box:
	* Select the "Settings" menu.

        * Click the "Change Display Type..." button near the bottom of
        the dialog box.

        * This displays the "Change Display Type" dialog box. "Click the
Change..." button in the "Adapter Type" section. This displays
        the "Select Device" dialog box.

        * Click on "Have Disk..." from the "Select Device" dialog box.
and enter the path to the Stingray drivers
(/drivers/display/avance on the Windows 95 CD).

        * Select the "Avance Logic 2301 PCI" driver for both the VL-Bus
        and PCI bus Stingray.

Close the Display Properties dialog box, restart Windows 95.

Once Windows 95 restarts, you can use the "Display Properties" utility
to change the color depth and resolution.

Installation Procedure #2: Upgrading To the Stingray Card.

If you are installing the Stingray on a machine that already has Windows
95 loaded:

Before installing the Stingray, reset Windows 95 to standard VGA:

Open the "Display Properties" dialog box by clicking on the desktop with
the right mouse button and selecting "Properties" from the pop-up menu,
or by launching the "My Computer" icon, selecting "Control Panel" and
then selecting "Display."

From the "Display Properties" dialog box:

	* Select the "Settings" menu.

        * Click the "Change Display Type..." button near the bottom of
        the dialog box.

        * This displays the "Change Display Type" dialog box. Click the
"Change..." button in the "Adapter Type" section. This displays
        the "Select Device" dialog box.

        * Choose "Show all devices" then "Standard display types."

        * Select "Standard display adapter (VGA)."

        * Click on "OK."

Windows will ask you if you would like to restart the system, choose
yes. Windows 95 will restart. Once Windows 95 has restarted, click on
the "Start" icon, choose "Shut Down..." and select "Shut down the
computer."

Install the Stingray in your system following the installation
instructions in the Stingray manual.

Once the Stingray is installed, restart the computer.

Open the "Display Properties" dialog box by clicking on the desktop with
the right mouse button and selecting "Properties" from the pop-up menu,
or by launching the "My Computer icon," selecting "Control Panel," and
then selecting "Display."

From the "Display Properties" dialog box:

        * Select the "Settings" menu.

        * Click the "Change Display Type..." button near the bottom of
        the dialog box.

        * This displays the "Change Display Type" dialog box. Click the
"Change..." button in the "Adapter Type" section. This displays
        the "Select Device" dialog box.

        * Click on "Have Disk..." from the "Select Device" dialog box
and enter the path to the Stingray drivers
(/drivers/display/avance on the Windows 95 CD).

Select the "Avance Logic 2301 PCI" driver for both the VL-Bus and PCI
bus Stingray.

Close the "Display Properties" dialog box, restart Windows 95.

Once Windows 95 restarts, you can use the "Display Properties" utility
to change the color depth and resolution.

Setting refresh rates for the Stingray under Windows 95.

NOTE: DO NOT choose a monitor model or standard monitor type that
supports refresh rates that are higher than your monitor can support.
If you do, you may permanently damage your monitor. If you are unsure
of what monitor model or standard monitor type to select, please refer
to the documentation on your monitor or contact the manufacturer.

The refresh rate is selected using the SETCRT program. If you've
already installed your Hercules product using the included Installation
Diskette and you've selected a monitor type from our installation
program, the appropriate SETCRT command is already in your AUTOEXEC.BAT,
and you probably won't need to do anything else. If you have not
already done so, the easiest way to set your refresh rate is to install
our software according to the instructions in our Installation Guide.
You may skip the portions that cover the installation of our Windows 3.1
drivers, unless you're also running Windows 3.1 on your computer.

If you're in a hurry to get your Hercules product running at a high
refresh rate and Windows 95 is the only operating environment you'll be
using on your computer, you can take the following steps:

1) Select Shut down... from the Start menu and restart the computer in
MS-DOS mode.

2) Copy the SETCRT.EXE file from the root directory of the Hercules
Installation Diskette onto your hard drive.

3) If you've copied SETCRT.EXE into the C:\HERCULES directory, place the
following line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

	C:\HERCULES\SETCRT -n r1 r2 r3 ...rn

Where r1 through rn are values that correspond to the refresh rates
you'd like to use at the various resolutions supported by your Hercules
product. A table of resolutions and refresh rates for your product is
contained at the end of this guide. For a complete list of SETCRT
options, see Stingray Installation Guide.

Stingray Windows 95 Frequently Asked Questions.

Q. Why am I getting GPF's and/or Page Faults now that I have installed
Windows 95?

A. This happens when you upgrade from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. Windows
95 is trying to use the Windows 3.1 driver that was previously
installed. The work around is to follow the "Installation Procedure #1,
first time install." instructions.
