Overview

GWSCAN 3.15 is a diagnostic hard disk utility.  This program allows you to verify most hard disk drives.  There are options to check the disk, test the disk, and write zeros to the disk.


Identification

This utility can be used on any IDE or UATA hard disk drive purchased from Gateway, either as part of a computer configuration or through Gateway Add-Ons, with the exception of any hard disk drive connected to a SCSI controller card.


Installation

You can download the following file from Gateway's ftp site: ftp://ftp.gateway.com/pub/hardware_support/drivers/win3.x_and_dos/mass_storage/hard_drives/7510801.exe

Download the file to a location on the computer that you can remember, the Desktop is suggested, and then follow these steps: 

1.  Insert a blank, formatted floppy disk into the floppy disk drive. 

2.  On your screen, locate and double-click the newly downloaded file, 7510801.exe.  (If you downloaded it to a location different from the Windows Desktop, locate the file, and double-click it to start the extraction.) 

3.  In the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box, click Unzip.  Seven (7) files extract to the disk in the floppy disk drive.  Click OK.

4.  In the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box, click Close.

5.  From the Start menu, click Shut Down.  In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart the computer, and then click Yes. 

6.  The computer restarts to the disk in the floppy disk drive and runs the GWSCAN utility automatically.

GWSCAN 3.15 is a diagnostic hard disk drive utility.  This program allows you to verify most hard disks.  There are options to check the disk, test the disk, and write zeros to the disk. 

1.  By default, the Select Drive option is selected.  To see a list of all hard disk drives installed and the current status of each hard disk drive, press ENTER. 

2.  On the Select New Drive screen, all of the installed hard disk drives are listed.  Use the arrow keys to select the hard disk drive, and then press ENTER.  This displays the status details and verifies which hard disk drive has been selected.  Press any key.

3.  For each hard disk that displays a status of TEST THE DRIVE, using the arrow keys, select the hard disk drive.  From the main menu, select the Quick Test option. 

4.  The Quick Test screen appears, stating how many hard disk drivess the utility detected.  Press any key to continue if the expected number of hard disk drives is listed.  The next Quick Test screen appears, stating the test takes about 90 seconds to run.  Press the R key to run the test or any key to return to the main menu. 

5.  At the end of the test, one of the following messages is displayed: 

 a.  PASS, which means that the hard disk drive has passed the test and is error-free. 

 b.  FAIL, which means that the hard disk drive has not passed the test, and you should contact Gateway technical support for additional information.  The status for all hard disk  drives is always available by selecting the Select Drive option from the main menu. 

6.  Press any key.

7.  Select QUIT from the main menu to quit the test.  A message informs you that the computer needs to be reset to reinitialize the BIOS Setup Utility and hard disk drives.  Remove the disk from the the floppy disk drive, and then press CTL+ALT+DELETE, or turn off the power, and then turn on the power to restart the computer.


Removal

When restarting, remove the disk from the floppy disk drive so the computer starts to the hard disk drive.


Troubleshooting

If you have any issues extracting the files or running the GWSCAN utility, download the file to a different, formatted, floppy disk, and follow the Installation steps in this document.


Reason for Update

Version 3.15 has internal code changes to allow for showing of PASS or FAIL easily.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
