Overview

This is the P21 BIOS for the Tabor motherboard.

Note: Do not install this BIOS unless you were instructed to do so by a Gateway technician.


Identification

To confirm that this is the correct BIOS update for your motherboard, follow these steps:

If the computer is turned off:

1.  Turn on the computer, and repeatedly press the F1 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.

2.  After the BIOS Setup Utility opens, look at the bottom of the screen for the current BIOS version.  The version needs to read 4M4PB0X1.xxx.xxxx.Pxx (where Pxx is the current revision number).

3.  If BIOS 4M4PB0X1.xxx.xxxx.Pxx is displayed, you have the correct BIOS update.  Press F10 to exit the BIOS Setup Utility, and then press ENTER.


If the computer is turned on and in Windows:

1.  From the Start menu, click Shut Down, and then select the option to restart the computer.

2.  When the computer restarts, repeatedly press F1 to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.

3.  After the BIOS Setup Utility opens, look at the bottom of the screen for the current BIOS version.  The version needs to read 4M4PB0X1.xxx.xxxx.Pxx (where Pxx is the current revision number).

4.  If BIOS 4M4PB0X1.xxx.xxxx.Pxx is displayed, you have the correct BIOS update.  Press F10 to exit the BIOS Setup Utility.


Installation

Preparing your computer

Before updating your computer's BIOS, enter the current BIOS Setup Utility, and write down each of the current settings, in the event that this information is needed again after the upgrade.


Copying the files

1.  On your screen, double-click the BIOS update that you downloaded.  The files self-extract and copy into folder C:\cabs\7508283.

2.  On your screen, double-click the My Computer icon.

3.  In the My Computer window, double-click the C: icon, double-click the cabs folder, and then double-click the 7508283 folder.

4.  In the 7508283 folder, from the Edit menu, click Select All.

5.  In the 7508283 folder, from the Edit menu, click Copy.

6.  Close all windows.

7.  Place a formatted, blank disk in the floppy disk drive.

8.  On your screen, double-click the My Computer icon.

9.  In the My Computer window, double-click A:.

10.  In the A: folder, from the Edit menu, click Paste.


Performing the update

1.  From the Start menu, click Shut Down, and then select the option to restart the computer.  Leave the disk in the floppy disk drive while the computer restarts.

2.  When the computer restarts, you see the following message:

  The BIOS update utility will automatically perform the
  following steps in sequence:

  a. Update the system BIOS
  b. Reset all CMOS settings to default values
  c. Restart the computer to activate changes

  Note: remove the BIOS update disk from the floppy drive
  after the BIOS update utility resets the system.

  Press any key to continue......

3.  Press any key to continue.

4.  The program displays a progress bar, and when it reaches 100%, the computer restarts.  While the computer restarts, remove the floppy disk.

5.  When the computer restarts, repeatedly press F1 to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.

6.  After the BIOS Setup Utility opens, press F10 to exit, and then press ENTER.


Removal

There is no removal process for the BIOS.  If you are experiencing difficulties after installing this version, you can download the previous BIOS version from the Gateway Web site and re-install it.


Troubleshooting

If you have difficulties installing this BIOS, download the file again, and then follow the preceding installation steps.


Reason for Update

This BIOS upgrade resolves some minor technical issues.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
