GoBack 3.21 README.TXT October 2002 ________________________________________________________________ I M P O R T A N T U P D A T E S A N D N O T I C E S ________________________________________________________________ All users of GoBack should read the following before installation. 1) General Information GoBack adds an underlying safety net to the use of your computer. GoBack loads prior to Windows by placing an entry into the Master Boot Record of your system, this allows you to access GoBack's recovery features in the case Windows will not start. GoBack is not a replacement for backups, it is designed to give you the ability to restore your entire system or even just a single file during the time between your regular backups. However, this ability should not be assumed. GoBack's restorative ability is a function of, among other things, the intensity of disk usage and the amount of disk space allocated for the GoBack history file (a maximum of 4000 megabytes) which is used for tracking all the changes on your system. We recommend that you continue to create your regular system backups in the case of hardware failure. A tutorial about the unique features and abilities of GoBack can be launched from the GoBack Main Menu. The GoBack movie is a short illustration of a scenario where GoBack saved the day for some business users. The GoBack movie is only available in the English language. It is located on the product CD in USA\GoBack Preview.exe. 2) Before Installation As with all software installations, it is highly recommended that you backup your entire system prior to installing GoBack. It is also important that you close down any programs running in the background on your system prior to beginning the GoBack installation. This would include any programs running in your system tray located next to your clock on your Windows desktop. BIOS level anti-virus protection will need to be disabled before installing GoBack so that GoBack has the ability to create its entry in the Master Boot Record. The BIOS level anti-virus protection can be re-enabled once the GoBack installation has completed. Programs running in the background can interfere with the installation of GoBack. Before installation and during the course of using the computer on which GoBack is installed, it may be necessary to understand and apply information located within this readme file and the GoBack User Guide. We recommend that you read through the GoBack User Guide to gain a clear understanding of all the features included in GoBack. 3) Adobe Acrobat Reader Setup On some system configurations, Adobe Acrobat Reader Setup (available during GoBack Setup) may indicate that it needs to restart the system to complete the setup. If presented with this option, do not choose to restart. Restarting the system for Acrobat Reader Setup will interrupt GoBack Setup and will require that you restart GoBack Setup after rebooting. 4) Accessibility To provide access to everyone, including those with disabilities, GoBack gives you a choice of input methods, including keyboard access to all features and simple mouse click access for common tasks. Individual GoBack applications in Windows are built using standard user interface elements that are compatible with accessibility utilities included in Windows. See Windows Help for information about using these accessibility utilities. In addition to compatibility with Windows accessibility utilities, GoBack lets you use other helpful keyboard shortcuts: GoBack Boot Menu: To select an option from this menu, press the key corresponding to the underlined letter of the option you want to select. All GoBack Windows applications: Using standard Windows keyboard access methods, select drop down menus and options by pressing the ALT key and the underlined letter of the option you want. Move among options by using the keyboard's TAB and/or arrow keys. GoBack Main Menu: To select an item on the GoBack Main Menu, press the TAB key to advance to the next menu item, and then press SPACEBAR to select the highlighted item. Select the drop down menu by pressing SHIFT+F10. Access window close and minimize options by pressing ALT+SPACEBAR. GoBack Drive Window (advanced features): Provided there is GoBack history for the date desired, you can use the following key combinations to navigate within the GoBack calendar: CTRL+P Go to previous day CTRL+N Go to next day ALT+P Go to previous month ALT+N Go to next month 5) Operating System Compatibility GoBack is compatible with all versions of Microsoft Windows 98, Windows Me (Millennium Edition), Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Windows 2000 Professional Workstation and Windows XP Home and Professional. GoBack is not compatible with any other operating systems. GoBack is not compatible with some advanced features of Windows NT/2000/XP usually associated with servers. Examples include multiple processors, volume sets, dynamic disks, and striping. When upgrading or changing operating systems or applying operating system Service Packs, GoBack should first be uninstalled using the Add/Remove Programs option in the Windows Control Panel. Then the new operating system should be installed/upgraded. A version of GoBack that supports the new operating system should then be obtained and installed. Windows shutdown issues are sometimes brought to the surface after installing Roxio's GoBack software. GoBack is not the cause of the shutdown issues. Microsoft has several knowledgebase articles on their support web site that address operating system shutdown issues. Please refer to the Microsoft support web site for additional information on operating system shutdown issues. 6) Drive Support GoBack can protect all drives that are recognized by the system BIOS. If your drive is not recognized during the initial BIOS hardware identification phase of the boot or requires special device drivers, you will not be able to use GoBack on that drive. GoBack does not protect removable media, such as floppy, Zip, etc. Dynamic Disk Overlays (DDOs) are supported for most major brands under Windows 98/Me. They are not supported nor recommended for GoBack installations under Windows NT/2000/XP. Examples include Ontrack's Disk Manager and StorageSoft's EZ-Drive. 7) Dual Booting Dual booting is only supported for the following configuration: -Only two operating systems are being installed and one is Windows 9x/Me and the other is Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP. -The Microsoft supplied boot manager is the only boot manager. -GoBack must be installed once for each operating system, disabling (not uninstalling) GoBack between installs. For the GoBack Electronic Software Distribution (ESD) version you will need to download the ESD product from within each operating system for the installation to complete successfully. For complete information and instructions on installing GoBack on a dual-boot system configured as described above, please visit our knowledgebase located in the Support area on the Roxio website at http://www.roxio.com. 8) Windows System Restore in Me and XP GoBack is compatible with the Windows System Restore feature in Windows Me and Windows XP. On a Windows Me system when GoBack is installed a GoBack message will be displayed informing you that it will disable System Restore and make itself the default restore program. You can re-enable System Restore if you wish. On a Windows XP system when GoBack is installed, System Restore will NOT be disabled automatically. You can disable the System Restore feature if you wish as both GoBack and System Restore utilize disk space and resources. GoBack protects not only the system files, it also has the added protection of user data files which System Restore does not. 9) Hibernation and GoBack Auto-Revert Auto-Revert is not compatible with hibernation, a system feature that lets the current state be saved to hard disk while putting the system in an "off" state. A system coming out of hibernation causes an event which is interpreted by GoBack as a Restart event, which will trigger an unintentional Auto-Revert when using any "on Restart" Auto-Revert option. For information about disabling hibernation, see your system documentation. 10) Using Disk Compression Utilities Disk-level compressed drives are not supported by GoBack (such as DriveSpace, DoubleSpace, etc.). However, GoBack is fully compatible with file-level compression, such as that provided by PKZIP, WINZIP, and ARJ. GoBack is also compatible with the file level compression built into Windows NT/2000/XP. 11) Uninstall Information GoBack can only be correctly uninstalled using Add/Remove Programs from within the Windows Control Panel. To do so, click Start>Settings> Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, then select GoBack from the list of installed programs. Do NOT allow any third party utilities to monitor the uninstall process as they will interfere and the uninstall may not complete successfully. 12) Obtaining Optimal Technical Support In some situations, to aid technical support, they may ask you to boot from a floppy diskette. It is suggested that you create a bootable floppy disk from within Windows (please refer to your Windows documentation for exact instructions on creating a bootable floppy diskette for your version of Windows) and copy the file gb_prog.exe onto that diskette. If there is not enough available space on your boot floppy, the gb_prog.exe file can be copied onto a separate floppy disk. This file is located by default in C:\Program Files\Roxio\GoBack. The support area of the Roxio website (http://www.roxio.com) contains additional valuable information regarding GoBack. To view the Deluxe retail product technical support options, see support.pdf in the Support folder of your GoBack installation directory.Download Driver Pack
