          resume normal operations.

     ------------------------------------------------------------
     "HOT-SWAPPING" DEVICES

On occasion it may be necessary to replace installed and
configured devices without downing the server or reconfiguring
ports. To do so, follow these procedures.

"HOT-SWAPPING" VS1000, VS2000, or ROCKETPORT SERIAL HUB UNITS
     -------------------------------------------------------------
     1. Note the Network Address of the new unit.

          new device.

Note: Make sure that you transfer all cables on a port-
by-port basis so that the cables don't change
                 the configuration.

     4. Start the Comtrol Hardware Setup program. The Main Setup
          windows displays.

     5. Highlight the device you are working with and click the
Properties button. The Device Setup window displays.

     6. Use the Network Address field droplist to select the
Network Address of the new Unit. DO NOT MAKE ANY OTHER
CHANGES ON THIS SCREEN. The unit being swapped in must
have the same number of ports and the same starting COM
port number as the unit being taken out of service.

NOTE: Do not add or remove VS1100 expansion units while
                 swapping VS1000 base units.

     7. Click OK to close the Device Setup window.

     8. Click OK to exit the Comtrol Hardware Setup program.

     9. Click OK to save the new configuration.

The new device immediately replaces the old one.
Restarting the server is not needed.

     "HOT-SWAPPING" VS1100 EXPANSION UNITS (VS1000 ONLY)
     -------------------------------------
     1. Terminate all remote access sessions in progress and
power down the VS1000 base unit.

     2. Transfer all serial and VS1100 cables from the VS1100
being replaced to the new VS1100.

     3. Switch the VS1000 base unit on and verify that the new
          VS1100 passes power-on diagnostics.

The new VS1100 immediately replaces the old one. Further
configuration or restarting the server is not needed.

INSTALLATION TROUBLESHOOTING

Follow these steps to begin installation troubleshooting.

For more extensive information, see the Installation and
Configuration Guide for your product.

* Check the Event Viewer in the Windows NT Administrative Tools
   group for useful informational messages.

* SERIAL DEVICES: Check to make sure that you have the correct
cables on the correct ports (RJ45 Ethernet and RJ45 Serial
cables are easily mistaken for each other) and that the
   cables are connected securely.

* Check to make sure the Ethernet hub and any other network
devices that may be between the server and the device are
   powered up and working correctly.

* Check to make sure that the network address shown on the Device
Setup window matches the network address of the device.

* Select the Device Advisor tab from the Device Setup window,
and look for error messages and indications of network problems.

* If operating in a multiple-server environment, check to make
sure that you are controlling the device from its primary
server, that there is only one primary server assigned to this
particular device, and that no backup server has pre-empted the
   primary server.

NOTE: For more information about the backup server option,
see the Installation and Configuration Guide.

* Use the Test Terminal program to troubleshoot communications
   on a port-by-port basis.

* Use the Port Monitor program to check for errors, modem
   control, and status signals.

* Use the Peer Tracer program to track and trace the driver
   internal events.

* If you have more than one device, follow the procedures given in
"HOT-SWAPPING" (above) to swap out units. If this corrects the
problem, the device you removed from service may be defective or
   in need of repair.

=================================================================
KNOWN CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIONS

The driver was written to the Win32 API, which means that
it works with applications like:

*  Remote Access Server NT
*  Terminal and FAX programs

NOTE: Device names above COM9 require the \\.\ (backslash
backslash period backslash) in order for the system to
recognize them. For example, to reference COM20 use
       \\.\COM20 as the file name.

The following tables list the driver capabilities and limitations for
the Win32 API. Refer to the Installation and Configuration
Guide for your Network Communication Hub device for additional
information.
