For Girls Only

In the past, some jobs for teen-agers were considered jobs for boys. How many girls pump gas in your town? How many girls are janitors? How many girls are doing yard work, painting, car washing, or odd jobs? Would you like to do any of these jobs?

No?
Yes?
Maybe?

If you answered "No," you may continue with another part of Job Storming.

If you answered "Yes" or "Maybe," ask yourself why. Type your thoughts below.

I want a "boy's" job because...

Consider

Does your answer consider the following:

-- Most girls can pump gas, do yard work, and do odd jobs as well as a boy.

-- Some employers think a job is for boys because girls do not bother to apply.

-- Some girls think a job is for boys because they do not know any girls doing the work.

-- Some girls do not want a "boy's" job, because they think boys (or other girls) may tease them.

Which statement below tells what you think about people who do unreasonable teasing?

a. The person being teased has a problem.

b. The person doing the teasing has a problem.

Usually, a person who teases unreasonably (that is, will NOT stop!) has a problem.

Tactics for Getting a "Boy's" Job

Consider the tactics shown in the following situation:

Beth, a fifteen-year-old high school junior prefers being outside to being indoors. She knows that the Lawn-Perfect Landscaping Company hires summer help because her cousin Jack worked for them last summer when he was fifteen.

Beth: Hi, Aunt Karen, can I talk to Jack?

Jack: Hi, Beth. How are you doing?

Beth: Fine, Jack. I wonder if you can help me. I want to get a job with Lawn-Perfect Landscaping and I know you worked for them last summer. Can you tell me just what kind of work you did?

Jack: Yeh. It was hard. I cut lawns, raked -- that was the hardest part -- and sometimes spread fertilizer and sprayed lawn chemicals. I had to dig holes and plant shrubs and later in the summer, there were trimming and some weeding to do.

Beth: How many hours per day did you put in?

Jack: That depended on the weather. In nice weather we worked eight hours a day. In a light rain, we might work only half a day, unless the rain stopped. We didn't work at all in a hard rain, because the ground was too wet.

Beth: So you worked all the days everyone else was at the beach and you were off when it rained?

Jack: That's about it. But I did make better than minimum wage.

Beth: Would you work for them again?

Jack: Probably, except that I'm going to summer school this year and won't have the time.

Beth decides she has nothing to lose by trying. Jack has told her whom to talk to at Lawn-Perfect Landscaping.

In talking to Jack, which of the following points did Beth NOT learn?

a. That Lawn-Perfect Landscaping pays more than minimum wage
b. The kinds of work she'll be expected to do
c. That the number of hours depends on the weather
d. That Lawn-Perfect Landscaping has a job opening
e. That Jack would work for the company again if he had time

Answer spelled backwards is:

====================

Pretend you are Beth and plan to talk with Mr. Lane, the owner and manager of Lawn-Perfect Landscaping. Which points would you mention? Type the letters:

< >

a. "My cousin Jack worked for you last summer."
b. "I know the kind of work I'll be expected to do."
c. "I enjoy working outside."
d. "I know you haven't hired girls for summer work."
e. "I'd like to have a personal interview."

====================

All of the above points would probably be in Beth's favor, except one. Telling Mr. Lane that she knows he hasn't "hired girls for summer work" puts him on the defensive. It's like saying "Why haven't you hired girls for summer work?" when possibly no girls have applied.

If she wants the job, Beth should give Mr. Lane the benefit of the doubt. If he refuses to hire her because she is a girl, then she has a right to ask "Why?" Knowing a former employee, the kind of work, and a liking to work outside are in her favor.

Personal Interview

Why is asking for a personal interview, rather than asking for a job, a good tactic?

Asking for a personal interview is a good tactic, because...

< >

====================

Consider

Do your reasons for asking for a personal interview include these thoughts?

-- Some companies without an opening will still grant you a personal interview. You gain experience. Take all the practice you can get in job interviewing.

-- The company gains a potential future employee who demonstrates interest by being interviewed, even when there isn't a known opening.

-- If you make a good impression, you have an edge on applicants who have not interviewed when an opening does occur.

-- It is easy on the telephone to say, "Sorry, we have no openings." It is harder to say, "Sorry, but we don't grant personal interviews." Most employees of companies (especially owners and managers) like to tell people about their company. Many companies are reluctant to refuse a request for a personal interview, especially when no commitment to hire is involved.

Is being fifteen or sixteen years old a reason why you should not be granted a personal interview? No! You have as much right as an older person to request and receive an interview.

Scroll up to your personal interview paragraph and add any thoughts the above information may have inspired.

If you decide to apply for a "boy's" job what are some possible tactics?

Summary

If a girl wants a job known in the past as a "boy's" job, she ought to consider why she wants it and how to get it. Then she should go for it!
