Think

Who Will Hire Me?

Individual hiring practices may vary from company to company and from state to state, especially for the hiring of part-time workers. To avoid being told you are not eligible because of your age, make a few telephone calls.

Study This Conversation

You say: Can you tell me, please, who's in charge of hiring?

Response: A voice says, Mrs. Smith.

You say: I'd like to talk to Mrs. Smith.

If Mrs. Smith isn't in, say you'll call back. When you reach Mrs. Smith, you say: My name is (first, last name) and I am fifteen (or 16, 17, or 18) years old. Do you have any job openings for persons my age?

Response: No, sorry.

You say: Do you mean you have no openings, or you don't hire people my age?

Response: We have no openings.

You say: Could I fill out an application in case a job opens up?

Response: Yes, you can stop by and pick one up.

You say: Thank you, Mrs. Smith, I'll do that.

Think and Type

Pretend the above conversation was really yours. What did you learn by making one or two telephone calls?

<  >

====================

Does your answer above show that you learned all of these?

a. the name of the person in charge of hiring. (Always try to talk to the person in charge. The person responsible for hiring should have the best information.)

b. that persons your age can be hired.

c. that there are no current job openings.

d. that you can fill out an application for future openings.

Most important, you can make a contact with the person in charge. You can follow up by stopping in and asking to see Mrs. Smith. Remind her of your telephone conversation and that she told you to stop by and pick up an application.

Think and Type

What should Mrs. Smith have learned about you?

<  >

====================

Think

If Mrs. Smith "picks up on people," she should have learned these things about you:

a. You are efficient. (You took the trouble to find out her name in advance and to speak with her directly.)

b. You are honest. (You began by telling her your age and finding out her business's hiring practice on age.)

c. You are persistent. (You clarified what she meant by "No, sorry," and pursued a possible job opening by asking for a job application.)

d. You are reliable. (You did what you said you would and stopped by to pick up the application.)

To avoid being told by the manager of the supermarket: "Sorry, but you're not old enough," what should you do?

a. Ask your friend Mollie, whose mother works in the supermarket how old employees need to be.

b. Ask the manager.

Answer spelled backwards is:

.reganam eht ksA

It may be a good idea to ask Mollie's mother to let you know if she hears of any job openings. To get a direct answer on a hiring practice, your best information is the person in charge, (for example, the manager of a supermarket).

Think and Type

What sources do you have for finding a job?

Write a short paragraph starting with this phrase, "To find a job, I can..."

<  >

====================

Does the paragraph you typed above consider all of these sources?

-- Friends and friends of friends. Let the word out that you would like to find a job. People like to help!

-- Bulletin boards. Check bulletin boards located in churches, stores, community centers, libraries, or other places that serve the public. Some will contain advertisements for current openings.

-- Job service and employment centers. States and many local communities provide help to teen-agers seeking jobs.

-- Your school. Does your school have a work-study program? Guidance counselors may have ideas for you.

-- Newspapers. Newspapers charge for running ads. Most ads are for full-time jobs or part-time help for adults only. However, it is good to check the "want ads" to see if a new business, for example a restaurant, is opening in your area. Sometimes ads appear for bussing and waiting tables. If a minimum age is not stated, telephone and ask.

-- The neighborhood. The highest percentage of jobs for teen-agers is found in fastfood restaurants. Schools, stores, or businesses sometimes need janitorial help. Parks and recreation centers sometimes need attendants, referees, or helpers for special events. Nursing homes sometimes hire teen-agers to work as aides, to help in the kitchen or laundry, or to do yard work. Don't overlook jobs as baby sitters or mother's helpers.

-- Look around your neighborhood. Check with the filling station manager. You may not be permitted to pump gas, but you may be able to wash cars or do cleanup work. Do your neighbors need regular help with lawn care? Let them know you are available. Are the windows in the hardware store streaked and dirty? Offer to wash the windows for an hourly wage.

-- Do you live in a large city? Are streets or parks in your neighborhood littered? Perhaps funds are not available to hire full-time city workers. Perhaps a crew of teen-agers could "volunteer" to clean up free of charge for one weekend with the understanding that future cleanup is to be paid for on an hourly basis.

Scroll up to the paragraph you wrote and add any ideas that came to mind as you read this information.
