Proofreading Your Final Essay

Proofreading is what you do after you think you are done. The essay is where you want it; it says what you want it to say. You are ready to hand it in and move on. But, before you turn in your writing, you or your editor should read through it one more time, this time looking for mechanical errors, just the way your writing teacher does. To do that, you have to really read it, not just skim through it.

That's why it is sometimes better to proofread a classmate's work, and let a classmate read yours. You don't know what your classmate wrote and your classmate doesn't know what you mean, so as good readers, you both must read much more carefully. It is a bit like when your teacher writes on the board. You read carefully what the teacher writes because you know it's important if it's on the board. You also read carefully because you know how great it feels when you can point out that the teacher has used the wrong there.

Here's a way to warm up your proofreading skills so you'll be ready to tackle your own -- and your partner's -- work.

Read through the following error-filled paragraphs from "To Build a Fire" (apologies to Jack London!). Fix all mechanical errors: typos, spelling, punctuation, homophones, capitalization, etc. When you finish each paragraph, compare it with the original on the following screen. Make changes in your work to match the original.


At the mans heals trotted a dog, a big native husky, the propre wolf-dog, gray-coated and without any visible or tempermental difference from it's borther, the wild wolf. The animal was depressed by the tremendous cold. It new that it was know time for traveling. Its instinct told it a truer tale than was tolsd to the man by the man's judgement.

The dog didnot know anything about thermometers.Possibly in its brain there was no sharp consciousness of a condition of very cold such as was in the man's brain.
