The Lead-In Sentence

You are nearly done with this essay, but now it's time to worry about the most important sentence in the essay. You've gone to lots of work writing an essay; you want to be sure someone is going to read it, so now it's time to think about your opening sentence: The lead-in sentence. A boring lead-in sentence nearly always suggests a boring essay. Even writing teachers don't like to be bored.


Activity 1

Read the following lead-in sentences and then revise them, giving them some life. The first two are done for you -- as suggestions only. Collaborate with a partner if you have one. Then compare your work with at least one other person's.


1. The watching of professional football on television has its drawbacks.
