Writing to Your Audience

Before you go any further, you need to consider the audience for your persuasive essay. "Audience" refers to the reader you are writing for. It is important that you have a specific audience in mind when you write. Otherwise, your work has a shallow feeling to it, like those form letters you get where the computer has simply put your name in after "Dear" and then has added it two or three more times, trying to sound sincere.

Students tend to write for their writing teachers because they know that's who gives them the grade. Unfortunately, that usually results in a phony sound. You will be more successful if you have an audience in mind besides your teacher -- usually your classmates or a very specific group of young people or adults.

Copied below is a paragraph on lengthening the school year. Who is it written for?

The school year should be lengthened by twenty days. Students would get less bored and, therefore, into less trouble if they had a shorter vacation. Students would forget less if the summer vacation were not as long as it is. American students need more schooling to compete with the rest of the world. If the school year is not lengthened, America will continue to fall further and further behind the rest of the industrial world.

Did you guess that the paragraph is written to the adult voting taxpayers? You're right.

How might it be changed if you had to convince your classmates to accept a longer school year? One different reason might be:

1. You will not be able to compete with the rest of the world in the job market unless you become better educated.

Talk it over with your partners and list three more reasons that would convince your classmates that they need to go to school twenty days longer every school year.

My Essay

Earlier you may have worked on a file that contained topics for persuasive writing. In that file, you should've written three persuasive topic paragraphs. If you have access to that file (in workspace File 2, for example), open that file now. Choose two of the three persuasive topic paragraphs and identify an audience for each. Then list three reasons below each of the two paragraphs that would be effective arguments for that audience.

If you haven't done so already, name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)
