Writing for Your Audience II

In Writing for Your Audience I, you rewrote a letter by changing the audience from a grandmother to your best friend. Now you are going to think about audience again. And by now you've had more practice adding vivid descriptions to your writing.

Begin by thinking of two very opposite people in your life. You will be writing the same letter to these two people. You may decide that your best friend and a grandparent work well, but maybe you'll have some other ideas.

List the names of the two people you could write to at the < > angle brackets below.

1. < >

2. < >

Before you begin to write your letters, consider what each of the three or more paragraphs in the body of your letters will be about. Describe each topic in brief descriptive phrases. Here are some examples:

my cat had kittens...

fell off the porch...

least favorite relatives came over for dinner...

went to the movies with...

everyone is sick around here...

Make your list of paragraph topics below.

Letter To < >

Subject for Paragraph 1 < >

Subject for Paragraph 2 < >

Subject for Paragraph 3 < >

These letters can be just for fun. Or, you may want to write real letters to be sent. For example, one of your letters might be addressed to a current friend, and the other to a former friend you'd like to see again.

Or, the other might be addressed to your brother or sister, or to a former boyfriend or girlfriend; or one letter might be to a blood parent and the other to a stepparent. If you have changed your mind about whom you'll be writing to, go back and change their names now. In any case, think about whom you're writing to. Maybe the way you talk to that person will affect the style of your writing as well!

Now write your letter to the first person, below. Remember to write a paragraph about each topic you listed above. Of course, you may choose to add other paragraphs to the letter.

Dear < >,

Scroll back and copy your letter to this screen. Now make the changes necessary to turn this into a letter to your second audience. Again, think of the person and how you usually speak to that person.

Dear < >,

Name and save this file now. (Press ctrl+S, type a name for the file, and press enter.)
