Finding the Same Mistake

Sometimes when you write, you misspell one word throughout your writing. When you write on your AlphaSmart device (or a computer), you can use the search and replace feature to fix all the misspellings at once.

In the following paragraphs, the words "yo-yo" and "yo-yos" have been misspelled as "yuyu" and "yuyus."

Please use the search and replace feature (ctrl+find) to move the cursor to the misspelled word and then correct it everywhere it appears.

No one knows how old yuyus are. Toys very much like modern yuyus have been found in the ruins of ancient cities. Even thousands of years ago, children liked to play with yuyus! What materials do you think the yuyus were made from? What was the body of the yuyu made from?

In 1974, a fourteen-year-old boy named Gary Martin set a new yuyu record. For fifty-five hours, he kept a yuyu going up and down on a string. He never even stopped to change yuyus. In the same year, at an event called the Oddball Olympics, Sam Konugres made a yuyu perform the loop-the-loop more than 5,000 times. Some people think that yuyus should be included as a regular Olympic event!

A Brief History of Writing Tools

Computers have replaced typewriters, but typewriters have had an interesting history. They have actually helped to change the history of business, education, and communication.

The first practical typewriter was invented by an American, Christopher Shoes, in 1868. Although other inventors had built machines that could print letters on paper, this typewriter was the first one that was considerably faster than writing with a pen or pencil. The first typewriters were sold to the public in 1874. There was only one problem. The letters were printed on the back of the paper. Typists couldn't see what they were typing!

Mark Twins, the author of Tom Sayer, was the first to write a copy of a book on a typewriter. But he couldn't see what he was writing! It's a wonder that he could write such a good book in this way. Fortunately, that design was changed in 1883.

The first electric typewriter was invented by the most famous of American inventors, Thomas Alva Edson, in 1872, but it could only print on thin strips of paper. The first useful electric typewriters were introduced in 1920. And the first electric portables weren't available until 1956.

The typewriter never completely replaced handwriting. Computers might not completely replace typewriters. And we'll always need pens and pencils.
