Lively Lingo

The following passage describes a walk in the woods:

They walked into the woods, not talking to each other. They passed many trees and shrubs. Some of the shrubs had an overpowering odor.

Descriptive language would make the paragraph even more powerful.

The previous paragraph does not appear as its author originally wrote it. The language he used was much more vivid. The paragraph appears again below, but this time as C.S. Lewis originally wrote it. Compare the first passage with his actual work.

They walked on in silence, drinking it all in, passing through patches of warm sunlight into cool, green thickets and out again into wide mossy glades where tall elms raised their leafy roof far overhead, and then into dense masses of flowering currant and among hawthorn bushes where the sweet smell was almost overpowering.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
by C.S. Lewis

Relax, close your eyes and think about a walk you have taken or can imagine taking. It might be through a building, down a street, beside a lake, on the moon -- wherever you want it to be. Use Lewis's paragraph for a model. Try to make a picture with your words as though you are taking a photograph. See if you can write as interesting a paragraph as C.S. Lewis did.
