Clustering

Imagine this situation. You have a particular topic in mind. Your job is to make a list of words or phrases that relate to that topic. That's brainstorming.

It's fun to create brainstorm lists with your partner or with a friend. When you brainstorm, you put down your ideas as quickly as you can. These lists are a good way to think of supporting details for a topic. When you finish, you will probably have material to write a good paragraph.

If possible, work with a writing partner or group to do this activity.

Brainstorming

For each of the topics below brainstorm a list of ideas that you think of when you hear the topic word. Use colors, feelings, smells, objects, actions, appearances, sounds, or tastes to describe each topic word.

Sample Topic: snow

Ideas: cold
        Minnesota
        skiing
        skating
        icy
        covers the fields and woods
        beautiful white flakes

Topic: bumblebee

Topic: clouds

Now use some of your lists to write paragraphs. Here is an example using the sample topic snow. First, the topic sentence uses some of the brainstormed ideas:

Beautiful white flakes cover the fields and woods of icy Minnesota.

The remaining ideas from the list become supporting details. Here is one way these ideas might be written into a paragraph:

Beautiful white flakes cover the fields and woods of icy Minnesota. Skaters glide over the ice-covered ponds. Skiers whoosh down the snowy hills. Winter is beautiful.

Choose one of the brainstorming topics from above to use in writing a paragraph.

Now choose the ideas in your list that you want to use in your paragraph. You do not need to use all of the ideas in the list. Then write your paragraph below.

Choose a second topic for another paragraph. Scroll up and make a copy of this new list and place it at the < > angle brackets.
